Uncovering spatiotemporal patterns of atrophy in progressive supranuclear palsy using unsupervised machine learning.

To better understand the pathological and phenotypic heterogeneity of progressive supranuclear palsy and the links between the two, we applied a novel unsupervised machine learning algorithm (Subtype and Stage Inference) to the largest MRI data set to date of people with clinically diagnosed progressive supranuclear palsy (including progressive supranuclear palsy-Richardson and variant progressive supranuclear palsy syndromes). Our cohort is comprised of 426 progressive supranuclear palsy cases, of which 367 had at least one follow-up scan, and 290 controls. Of the progressive supranuclear pal

Genotype-specific communication profiles in 79,518 individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders.

RATIONALE: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are characterised by significant challenges in communication, social interaction, and adaptiv … tion in communication abilities. CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore the potential of precision speech-language pathology (SLP) approaches tailored to the specific verbal and nonverbal communication strengths and weaknesses of genetic groups. We also provide evidence for measurable improvements and declines in communication abilities with age at the group level, highli …

Patient and carer unmet needs: a survey of the British association of head and neck oncology nurses.

The aim of this survey was to ask members of the British Association of Head and Neck Oncology Nurses (BAHNON) about the identification of patients and carers unmet needs in the routine out-patient review clinic and the support services available during consultation. A national postal survey was sent out to the 210 current members of BAHNON in November 2009. Reminders were sent to non-responders in February 2010. The response rate was 61% (129/210). The vast majority (80%) were Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS). The questionnaire data support the strong belief in attempts to identify unmet need

Developmental outcomes for survivors of placental laser photocoagulation for the management of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fetoscopic laser coagulation of placental anastomoses reverses the pathological process in twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, thereby increasing survival, but there are a paucity of studies addressing long-term neurodevelopmental outcome of survivors. This study aimed to ascertain the presence of neurodevelopmental disabilities in child survivors of monochorionic pregnancies managed by placental laser photocoagulation in the Australian state of Victoria. METHODS: All pregnancies undergoing placental laser photocoagulation with the Victorian Fetal Therapy Service between 2006-2017

Establishment of a normative cepstral pediatric acoustic database.

IMPORTANCE: Few studies have used objective measures to evaluate the development of the normal pediatric voice. Cepstral analysis of continuous speech samples is a reliable method for gathering acoustic data; however, it has not been used to examine the changes that occur with voice development. OBJECTIVE: To establish and characterize acoustic patterns of the normal pediatric voice using cepstral analysis of voice samples from a normal pediatric voice database. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional study of 218 children aged 4 to 17 years, for whom English was the primary langu

Perceptual Evaluation of Voice and Parental Reports of Vocal Behaviors in Primary School Children in Chennai, India: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: The human voice plays a pivotal role in communication, influencing social interactions and overall development. Voice disorders among children, ranging from 6% to 9%, can hinder communication, academic, and social performance. Despite the prevalence, limited research examines parental observations alongside professional evaluations. This study bridges this gap, integrating parental perspectives with speech-language pathologist (SLP) assessments to provide a comprehensive understanding of children's vocal health. AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to invest

Validation of a Geriatric Bedside Swallowing Screen (GEBS): Protocol of a Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Demographic changes will raise the need for specialized care of older patients. Oropharyngeal dysphagia has recently been declared a geriatric syndrome reflecting its multifactorial background. Alongside multimorbidity, sarcopenia, frailty, and disability, swallowing disorders increase with advancing age, with prevalence rates reported to be as high as 44% in acute geriatric hospital settings and 80% in long-term care facilities. Hence, systematic screening of older patients to diagnose dysphagia and initiate treatment is of paramount importance to prevent bolus death, aspiration p

[A clinicopathological study on 13 cases of motor neuron disease with dementia].

Thirteen patients suffering from motor neuron disease with dementia were studied to analyze the clinicopathological spectrum. The diagnosis of the disease was made on the basis of a clinical history of progressive dementia and motor neuron involvement. The mean age at onset of 11 sporadic cases was 54.9 years (range, 43 to 69 years), with a mean duration of disease of 25 months (range, 11 to 47 months). The initial symptoms were dementia in 7 cases, motor neuron involvement in 2 cases, and both dementia and motor neuron involvement in 2 cases. The clinical picture of motor neuron disturbance i

Correlation of the Size of Adenoids With Impedance Audiometry Findings.

Introduction Adenoid tissue is part of the first line of immunity of the upper aero-digestive tract. It is located in the postero-superior wall of the nasopharynx behind the choana. Adenoid hypertrophy, a common childhood disorder, significantly contributes to the pathogenesis of otitis media with effusion (OME), which is the leading cause of hearing impairment in young children. This condition can result in delayed speech, poor academic performance, and language development issues. Assessing the size of the adenoids and their correlation with OME is crucial, as undiagnosed cases can lead to c

The Comparison Between Positive and Negative Symptoms Severity in Prolonged Methamphetamine-induced Psychotic Disorder and Schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to compare the positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia in patients who had psychotic symptoms more than one month after discontinuation of methamphetamine abuse. These factors were analyzed by the positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS) questionnaire. METHODS: Sixty participants were selected from patients referred to Iran Psychiatric Hospital with psychotic symptoms (delusions or hallucinations, disorganized behavior, and speech). The control group was 30 patients with schizophrenia based on a semi-structured interview according to DSMIV-TR (SCID).

The Effects of Multimodal Communication Treatment With Discourse and Group Activities via Telepractice on People With Severe Nonfluent Aphasia: A Case Study.

PURPOSE: Nonfluent aphasia can be characterized by prominent difficulty with speech production. Compensatory and functional aphasia treatments, including multimodal communication treatment (MCT), have been highlighted for their support of life participation because they aim to circumvent spoken language difficulties through use of other modalities. The current study explored an expanded version of MCT, by including a discourse task and group activities on telepractice (MCT with discourse and group activities via telepractice [teleMCT+DG]) to mirror daily communication and improve communication

Word Retrieval in the Wild: The Feasibility of an Audio-Based Ecological Momentary Naming Protocol Completed by Adults With and Without Poststroke Aphasia.

PURPOSE: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) involves collecting data regarding behaviors or states of interest repeatedly in individuals' natural environments, typically from a smart device. The feasibility of EMA protocols with people with aphasia (PWA) remains relatively unexplored, particularly for objective assessments of language ability. We assessed the feasibility of a novel, smartwatch-delivered, audio-based ecological momentary naming protocol. METHOD: Fourteen PWA and 13 healthy controls completed a 3-week EMA protocol in which they attempted to name pictured objects delivered vi
