History of physical abuse and periconceptional drinking in pregnant women.

This study examines the relationship between physical abuse and periconceptional drinking in women presenting to a mid-Atlantic, urban hospital-based OB/GYN clinic serving a largely indigent population between April 2003 and May 2004. During their first prenatal visit, 308 women completed a screening battery that included the Abuse Assessment Screen (AAS) and measures of alcohol use, including the CAGE, T-ACE, TWEAK, and the PRIME-MD Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ). Bivariate analyses, including odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), revealed that women with a history of phys

A prospective observational study of domestic violence during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether women reporting domestic violence are at increased risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: A screening questionnaire, previously validated for the identification of female victims of domestic violence, was offered to women presenting to our Labor and Delivery Unit. The survey prompted women to indicate whether her partner or family member physically hurt her, insulted or talked down to her, threatened her with harm, or screamed or cursed at her. The primary study outcome was to detect a 3-fold increase in low birth weight infants (< or = 2,500 g) in women re

Prevalence of domestic violence and associated factors among women on a trauma service.

BACKGROUND: Despite the increasing recognition of the problem of domestic violence (DV), it has not been studied in surgical populations. METHODS: Eligible patients underwent screening for a recent history of DV and alcohol abuse (AA). Other demographic, health, and injury-related data were also collected. RESULTS: Of 127 subjects entered into the study, 18% screened positive for DV and 21% screened positive for AA. Of those screening positive for DV, 65% screened positive for AA compared with 12% of those screening negative for DV (p < 0.001.) Screening for DV was recommended by a vast majo

Court-involved battered women's responses to violence: the role of psychological, physical, and sexual abuse.

Failure to understand the importance of psychological abuse as a component of domestic violence can result in little appreciation for the complexity of victims' experience and thus a failure to provide the most effective intervention. This study examined the role of psychological abuse, physical violence, injury, and sexual abuse in predicting court-involved women's (1) prior attempts to seek help from the justice system and to leave the battering relationship, (2) use of criminal prosecution and civil protection orders, and (3) traumatic stress reactions. At the univariate level, each abuse v

Treating disorganized attachment in the Group Attachment-Based Intervention (GABI©): A case study.

This paper describes the treatment of a mother and child who demonstrated disorganized attachment behaviors in their interactions with one another. The mother, who was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, felt incapable of managing her aggressive toddler and his emotional needs. The dyad was referred for therapy due to concerns about his developmental progress, evident delays having been mainly attributed to the problems observed within the parent-child relationship. The primary intervention applied to working with the dyad was the Group Attachment-Based Intervention (GABI©), develo

Pathological gamblers and a non-psychiatric control group taking gender differences into account.

The current study aimed to identify personality traits, emotional states and adjustment variables in a sample of pathological gamblers as compared to a non-gambling control group taking gender differences into account. The sample for this study consisted of 206 subjects (103 pathological gamblers and 103 non-psychiatric subjects from the general population matched for age and gender). Pathological gamblers had a lower educational level and a family history of alcohol abuse higher than non-gamblers. In turn, female gamblers were affected by unemployment and a lower socioeconomic status more oft

Prevalence of abuse and intimate partner violence surgical evaluation (PRAISE) in orthopaedic fracture clinics: a multinational prevalence study.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is the leading cause of non-fatal injury to women worldwide. Musculoskeletal injuries, which are often seen by orthopaedic surgeons, are the second most common manifestation of IPV. We aimed to establish the 12-month and lifetime prevalence of IPV in women presenting to orthopaedic fracture clinics. METHODS: The PRAISE team of 80 investigators did a cross-sectional study of a consecutive sample of 2945 female participants at 12 orthopaedic fracture clinics in Canada, the USA, the Netherlands, Denmark, and India. Participants who met the eligibility

Intimate partner violence victimization and parenting stress: assessing the mediating role of depressive symptoms.

Guided by the spillover hypothesis and process model of parenting, this study examined relationships between intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and parenting characteristics among a sample of 1,153 lower-income women. Hierarchical regression was used to investigate a mediational model examining women's self-reports of physical and psychological IPV, depressive symptoms, and parenting stress. Results suggest that depressive symptoms partially mediate the link between a mother's psychological IPV victimization and later self-reported parenting stress. Findings from this study highligh

Marital psychological and physical aggression and children's mental and physical health: direct, mediated, and moderated effects.

Relations between marital aggression (psychological and physical) and children's health were examined. Children's emotional insecurity was assessed as a mediator of these relations, with distinctions made between marital aggression against mothers and fathers and ethnicity (African American or European American), socioeconomic status, and child gender examined as moderators of effects. Participants were 251 community-recruited families, with multiple reporters of each construct. Aggression against either parent yielded similar effects for children. Children's emotional insecurity mediated the

Socioeconomic factors and processes associated with domestic violence in rural Bangladesh.

CONTEXT: Although the pervasiveness of domestic violence against women in Bangladesh is well documented, specific risk factors, particularly those that can be affected by policies and programs, are not well understood. METHODS: In 2001-2002, surveys, in-depth interviews and small group discussions were conducted with married women from six Bangladeshi villages to examine the types and severity of domestic violence, and to explore the pathways through which women's social and economic circumstances may influence their vulnerability to violence in marriage.
