Helicobacter pylori in oral ulcerations.

Helicobacter pylori is an important pathogen involved in the development of gastrointestinal ulcers, but its involvement in oral ulcerous lesions is unclear. As culture is generally recognized as the gold standard for diagnosis of H. pylori infection, we employed this approach to assess the association of H. pylori with oral mucosal ulcerations. Samples were collected from patients with oral mucosal ulcerative disorders: 12 cases of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), 7 cases of herpes simplex virus (HSV) stomatitis, and 3 cases of erosive lichen planus (LP). Serum IgG antibodies against H. p…

Fusospirochetosis causing necrotic oral ulcers in patients with HIV infection.

Under certain permissive circumstances, normally occurring fusiform bacteria and Borrelia spirochetes can result in a symbiotic overgrowth that leads to necrotic oral ulcers (stomatitis), gingivitis, and periodontitis. These lesions are collectively known as oral fusospirochetosis and may be under-appreciated in patients with HIV infection and AIDS. Fusospirochetal oral ulcers in patients with HIV are often large, necrotic, and malodorous; they respond completely to penicillin. We report 3 patients with HIV infection and fusospirochetal ulcerative stomatitis and review the clinical presentatio…

Disruption of Fatty Acid Desaturase Gene Alters Aphid Resistance and Volatile Emissions in Sorghum.

Jasmonic acid (JA)-deficient msd3 sorghum mutants exhibit contrasting resistance phenotypes against sugarcane aphids (SCA; Melanaphis sacchari), which promotes aphid settling at early time points while providing antibiosis-mediated resistance at later stages. Here we investigated the physiological, hormonal, and metabolic mechanisms underlying msd3-mediated resistance to SCA. Contrary to the widely reported growth-defence trade-off, msd3 plants maintained biomass comparable to uninfested controls, while wild-type (WT) plants showed significant reduction in biomass following SCA feeding. Gas ex

Acclimation to High Vapor Pressure Deficit in Warmer Air Can Reduce Tree Vulnerability to Drought-Induced Mortality.

Climate change imposes new constraints on tree survival, emphasising two key parameters: the vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and air temperature. Yet, no study has experimentally evaluated drought-induced tree mortality risk following acclimation to elevated temperatures with low or high VPD. Three tree species of contrasting temperature and drought tolerances (Prunus mahaleb, Quercus robur, and Populus nigra) underwent a growing season of acclimation to elevated temperature and/or VPD, and a lethal drought the following year until stem hydraulic failure was confirmed through micro-CT. Our mecha

Interactions between beech and oak seedlings can modify the effects of hotter droughts and the onset of hydraulic failure.

Mixing species with contrasting resource use strategies could reduce forest vulnerability to extreme events. Yet, how species diversity affects seedling hydraulic responses to heat and drought, including mortality risk, is largely unknown. Using open-top chambers, we assessed how, over several years, species interactions (monocultures vs mixtures) modulate heat and drought impacts on the hydraulic traits of juvenile European beech and pubescent oak. Using modeling, we estimated species interaction effects on timing to drought-induced mortality and the underlying mechanisms driving these impact

Cytosolic alkalization and cytosolic calcium oscillation in Arabidopsis guard cells response to ABA and MeJA.

Abscisic acid (ABA)- and methyl jasmonate (MeJA)-induced stomatal closure are accompanied by cytosolic alkalization in guard cells. However, it remains to be clarified how the alkalization functions in not only ABA signaling but also MeJA. We investigated cytosolic alkalization in guard cells during ABA-, MeJA- and Ca(2+)-induced stomatal closure of wild type, abi1-1, abi2-1, ost1-2 and coi1 using a pH-sensitive fluorescent dye, BCECF-AM. ABA induced cytosolic alkalization in guard cells of wild-type and coi1 but not in ost1-2 guard cells whereas MeJA elicited cytosolic alkalization in wild-ty

Dynamics of the enhanced emissions of monoterpenes and methyl salicylate, and decreased uptake of formaldehyde, by Quercus ilex leaves after application of jasmonic acid.

Jasmonic acid (JA) is a signalling compound with a key role in both stress and development in plants, and is reported to elicit the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Here we studied the dynamics of such emissions and the linkage with photosynthetic rates and stomatal conductance. We sprayed JA on leaves of the Mediterranean tree species Quercus ilex and measured the photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductances, and emissions and uptake of VOCs using proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry and gas chromatography after a dark-light transition. Jasmonic acid treatment delayed the i

Electron microscopic study of denture plaque.

This study was designed to gain information on the composition and ultrastructure of bacterial plaque on the fitting surface of maxillary dentures in edentulous patients (with or without denture stomatitis of the palatal mucosa). Denture plaque was examined from 12 patients with complete dentures of unknown age. Clinical inspection of the palatal mucosa revealed that 5 suffered from denture stomatitis, while 7 exhibited a clinically normal palatal mucosa. Smears taken from the palatal mucosa and the fitting surface of the denture revealed the presence of bacteria in 11 of the 12 patients, whil…

Long-Term Irrigation History Provides Evidence for Drought Memory in Clonally Propagated Grapevines During Water Deficit and Recovery.

Grapevine adapts to water stress through complex hydraulic and growth adjustments, with its recovery capacity being a key component of drought tolerance. Recurrent drought can induce an acquired "water stress memory" (priming), altering a genotype's response to future stress. We investigated whether drought responses in grapevine progenies are more shaped by genetic background or environmental history. Primed (NI) and non-primed (FI) progenies of two varieties: Trincadeira (isohydric) and Castelão (anisohydric) were exposed to well-watered (WW) and water stress (WS) conditions, followed by rec

Biochemical and photochemical constraints to photosynthesis under boron excess: Evidence from physiological and transcriptomic responses in Citrus macrophylla.

This study investigated the effects of high boron (B) concentrations on photosynthetic performance in Citrus macrophylla. Six-month-old plants were grown under controlled conditions and irrigated for 30 days with nutrient solutions containing 0.11 mg·L-¹ (control), 5 mg·L-¹ (B5), and 10 mg·L-¹ (B10) B. Excess B reduced stomatal conductance (gs) and net CO2 assimilation (ACO2). However, the stronger decline in ACO2 relative to gs, together with stable intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), indicated that photosynthetic inhibition was not exclusively driven by stomatal closure. Instead, non-stoma

Protocol for constructing and characterizing recombinant vectored vaccines for rabies virus.

Recombinant vectored vaccines provide economical, rapidly engineered, and tailored immunization strategies. Here, we present a protocol for constructing and characterizing recombinant vectored vaccines for rabies virus (RV). We describe steps for generating replication-competent vesicular stomatitis virus (rcVSV) by replacing vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) glycoprotein (G) with RV G gene and for recovering rcVSV by co-transfecting baby hamster kidney (BHK-21) cells with the antigenomic VSV cDNA plasmid (pVSV). We then detail procedures for the functional, structural, and molecular characteri…

Feline dental disease.

Periodontal disease and chronic gingivitis/stomatitis are the most common feline dental diseases. With routine dental care and increased emphasis on home oral hygiene, these diseases can be controlled. Cats can be seen with a number of other dental disorders, and improved treatment methods such as restorations of early subgingival resorptive lesions, endodontic therapy, and orthodontic therapy can be performed successfully. More study and research are necessary about the gingivitis/stomatitis syndrome and subgingival resorptive lesions so that improved prevention and treatment recommendations …

Some specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DR/DQ haplotypes are more important than individual HLA-DR and -DQ phenotypes for the development of mucocutaneous type of Behçet's disease and for disease shift from recurrent aphthous stomatitis to mucocutaneous type of Behçet's disease.

The phenotype and haplotype frequencies of human leukocyte antigens (HLA)-DR and -DQ in 32 Chinese patients with the mucocutaneous (MC) type of Behçet's disease (BD) were calculated and compared with those in 310 healthy control Chinese and with those in 80 Chinese patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). We found that the phenotype frequency of HLA-DRw8 [corrected P (Pc)<0.005] and the haplotype frequencies of HLA-DRw8/DQw1 (Pc<0.005), -DRw8/DQw5(w1) (Pc<0.0005), -DRw12(5)/DQw1 (Pc<0.005), -DRw12(5)/DQw6(w1) (Pc< 0.0005), and -DRw52/DQw1 (Pc<0.005) in patients with the MC type of BD…

Detection of Bartonella henselae IgM in serum of experimentally infected and naturally exposed cats.

BACKGROUND: Results of Bartonella henselae blood culture, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay on blood, or IgG antibody assays do not always correlate with the presence or absence of clinical disease in cats, and B. henselae IgG antibodies in serum do not always correlate with bacteremia. However, little is known concerning Bartonella spp. IgM antibodies in naturally exposed cats. HYPOTHESIS: Bartonella spp. IgM antibodies in serum are associated with fever, stomatitis, and bacteremia based on PCR assay results in experimentally infected or client-owned cats. ANIMALS: Stored sera from cats…

A multicentre, randomised, double-blind, phase II study to evaluate the tolerability of an induction dose escalation of everolimus in patients with metastatic breast cancer (DESIREE).

BACKGROUND: Stomatitis is one of the main reasons to discontinue everolimus in patients with hormone receptor-positive (HR+)/human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-) metastatic breast cancer (mBC). To decrease stomatitis and subsequently early treatment discontinuations or dose reductions, the DESIREE trial investigated the use of a stepwise dose-escalation schedule of everolimus (EVE esc). PATIENTS AND METHODS: DESIREE is a phase II, multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in patients with HR+/HER2- mBC and progression/relapse after nonsteroidal aroma…

A guard cell carbonic anhydrase binds and regulates SLAC1 separate from its catalytic activity.

Stomata of plant leaves open to enable CO2 entry for photosynthesis and close when CO2 in the leaf is elevated. CO2 is thought to promote stomatal closure in part by activating the SLAC1 anion channel at the guard cell plasma membrane. Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) contribute to this activation, but their contribution as distinct from CO2-H2CO3 catalysis remains controversial. Here we show that the β-carbonic anhydrase CA4 binds selectively with the guard-cell anion channel SLAC1 to enhance channel current. The interaction is CO2-dependent, but binding is mediated by amino acids distal from the CO

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and hydraulic-thermal coordination under combined drought and heat stress in soybean.

Concurrent drought and heat waves impose a non-additive physiological constraint on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), creating a physiological trade-off between hydraulic preservation, which favors stomatal closure to prevent cavitation, and evaporative cooling, which requires sustained stomatal opening to mitigate thermal damage. This review synthesizes physiological and molecular evidence to develop a conceptual framework for understanding how arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) may influence plant responses under combined stress. Available evidence indicates that improved plant water status

Cross-ribbon conformation defines peptide recognition in SCREW/CTNIP-NUT/HSL3 signalling.

Plants balance gas exchange with pathogen defense through dynamic stomatal regulation. Stomata close temporarily during pathogen attack to limit invasion, then reopen to restore photosynthesis and transpiration while lowering apoplast water saturation to inhibit pathogen proliferation. The secreted peptides, SCREW/CTNIP promote stomatal reopening through the receptor NUT/HSL3 and co-receptor BAK1/SERK3, thereby counteracting ABA and MAMP-triggered stomatal closure. Here we present the cryo-EM structures of AtNUTECD and the AtNUTECD-SCREW2/CTNIP4-AtBAK1ECD complex, uncovering a distinctive pept
