Gustatory side effects after thoracoscopic sympathectomy.

BACKGROUND: Compensatory sweating is a frequent side effect after thoracoscopic sympathectomy for primary hyperhidrosis. Gustatory sweating is less commonly reported. It is defined as facial sweating when eating certain foods (particularly spicy food or acidic fruits) and has no generally accepted pathophysiologic explanation. We decided to investigate this phenomenon in patients who underwent thoracoscopic sympathectomy for primary hyperhidrosis and analyze whether the occurrence was influenced by the extent of sympathectomy. METHODS: During an 8-year period (1997 to 2005) a total of 238 pat…

Thoracoscopic sympathectomy for axillary hyperhidrosis: the influence of T4.

BACKGROUND: Recent data suggest that severe compensatory sweating after sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis is more common than previously reported. In particular, T2-T4 sympathectomy for axillary hyperhidrosis leads to significantly more disabling sweating compared with T2-T3 sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis. However, it is not known whether this is a result of the additional transection of the T4 segment or if patients with primary axillary hyperhidrosis are more prone to experience disabling compensatory sweating. METHODS: A follow-up study by questionnaire was made of 100 consecutive pa…

Challenging diagnosis of male intraductal papilloma masquerading as eccrine hidradenoma in the breast: Case report.

RATIONALE: This article presents a challenging case involving an elderly male patient with a misdiagnosed intraductal mammary papilloma initially identified as a sweat adenoma through ultrasound imaging. The study aims to explore the histopathology, clinical presentations, and sonographic features of both conditions, emphasizing the contributing factors to the diagnostic misstep. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 61-year-old male reported a persistent left breast mass, along with pain and swelling, spanning a 6-month duration. DIAGNOSES: Ultrasound examination indicated a deep, square, mixed-echo mass in …

Real-Time Detection of Body Nutrition in Sports Training Based on Cloud Computing and Somatosensory Network.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

With the progress of society and the improvement of living standards, sports training has gradually become an area of increasing concern for … the BIA method and the body composition analysis method based on the electrochemical sensor of body sweat. It designed a human nutrient composition detection system based on the BIA method. The error rate of the system is relatively small, which is basically maintained at about 2%. It uses a body surface sweat electrochemical sensor to detect changes in …

[Pustular miliaria rubra and systemic type 1b pseudohypoaldosteronism in a newborn].

BACKGROUND: The term "miliaria" is used to describe a group of highly transient skin disorders in the newborn characterized by eccrine duct obstruction and the passage of sweat into the epidermis and papillary dermis. This rash in the susceptible skin of the neonate is brought on by heat and confined environments. Our paper reports several episodes of pustular miliaria rubra associated with salt loss crises in a newborn with systemic pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1b (PHA). OBSERVATION: Since the first days of life, the child presented severe and diffuse miliaria comprising many disseminated pu…

Cystic-fibrosis-like disease unrelated to the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is considered to be a monogenic disease caused by molecular lesions within the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene and is diagnosed by elevated sweat electrolytes. We have investigated the clinical manifestations of cystic fibrosis, CFTR genetics and electrophysiology in a sibpair in which the brother is being treated as having CF, whereas his sister is asymptomatic. The diagnosis of CF in the index patient is based on highly elevated sweat electrolytes in the presence of CF-related pulmonary symptoms. The investigation of chloride conductance i…

Cystic fibrosis presenting with hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis in a previously healthy adolescent.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an exocrine disease affecting multiple organ systems. Patients with CF usually present with respiratory or gastroint … pulmonary and gastrointestinal manifestations, as in the case presented. Dysfunctional CFTR in the sweat ducts of CF patients are responsible for excessive chloride and sodium losses, especially in warm weather. Hypokalemia seen with heat stress is secondary to sweat as well as renal potassium wasting. Metabolic alkalosis is maintained by the excessive …

The spoon test: a valid and reliable bedside test to assess sudomotor function.

OBJECTIVE: To establish the validity of bedside sudomotor tests in a controlled prospective study. METHODS: Five different tests were used to assess presence of sweating at seven bilaterally symmetrical body loci, namely, examination with the unaided eye, visualization with light reflection, magnification with an ophthalmoscope, palpation of skin for slickness, and gliding the back of a spoon over the skin to detect friction. Sensitivity and specificity of these bedside tests were compared with the thermoregulatory sweat test in 130 subjects with generalized body sweating and 16 patients with…

Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis: a randomized control trial comparing T3 and T2-4 ablation.

BACKGROUND: Compensatory sweating is a major and troublesome complication noted frequently after sympathectomy in patients with primary palmar hyperhidrosis. This randomized clinical trial was projected to measure the impact of limited denervation on compensatory sweating while performing endoscopic thoracic sympthectomy. METHODS: Two hundred thirty-two patients with primary palmar hyperhidrosis were randomly allocated to either a T3 sympathectomy treatment, called group T3, or a T2-4 sympathetic treatment, called group T2-4. The patients underwent bilateral sympathetic ablation at correspond…

Selective division of T3 rami communicantes (T3 ramicotomy) in the treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: Compensatory sweating (CS) is the main cause of a patient's dissatisfaction after sympathetic surgery for palmar hyperhidrosis. Preservation of the sympathetic nerve trunk and limitations on the range of dissection are necessary to reduce CS. METHODS: We compared 64 patients (31 male, 33 female) (group 1) who underwent a T2 sympathicotomy between July 1998 and February 1999 and 83 patients (58 male, 25 female) (group 2) who underwent a T3 ramicotomy between August 2000 and December 2002. RESULTS: In group 1, 60 patients (93.8%) exhibited a decreased sweating on both hands, but 4 …

Comparative analysis of T2 selective division of rami-communicantes (ramicotomy) with T2 sympathetic clipping in the treatment of craniofacial hyperhidrosis.

OBJECTIVE: The main cause of dissatisfaction after sympathetic trunk blocking surgery (T2 sympathectomy, sympathetic clipping) for craniofacial hyperhidrosis is compensatory sweating. Preserving sympathetic trunk may decrease the incidence of compensatory sweating, and we introduce T2 ramicotomy, which may better preserve the sympathetic nerve trunk in order to reduce compensatory sweating. METHODS: From January 2000 to November 2002, video-assisted thoracoscopic (VAT) T2 sympathetic clipping and VAT ramicotomy were performed in 44 patients suffering from craniofacial hyperhidrosis. Twenty-tw…

Eccrine Hidradenoma of the Nasal Vestibule: A Rare Clinical Entity.

Eccrine hidradenoma is a relatively rare benign tumor of sweat gland origin but with possible malignant transformation. It usually consists of solitary, well-demarcated papules or nodules covered with normal skin. Common sites of involvement are the scalp, face, limbs, and anterior trunk. Although the lining of the nasal vestibule includes hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands, an eccrine hidradenoma originating in the nasal vestibule has yet to be reported. Herein, we describe a rare clinical presentation of nasal eccrine hidradenoma, treated successfully using a transnasal endos…

Skin biopsy in Lafora disease: genotype-phenotype correlations and diagnostic pitfalls.

Lafora disease is characterized by pathognomonic inclusions, Lafora bodies (LB), in neurons and other cell types. In skin, LB have been reported in either eccrine sweat glands or in apocrine sweat glands. The disease is caused by mutations in either the EPM2A gene or in a second yet-unknown gene. Here the authors determine whether a genotype-phenotype correlation exists between the genetic form of the disease and the skin cell type affected by LB formation. Also is described an important source of false positivity in the use of axillary biopsies for disease diagnosis.

Eccrine poroma of the eyelid.

A clinicopathological case report of a 71-year-old Caucasoid man with an unusual right lower eyelid lesion, which proved to be an eccrine poroma, is presented. Benign eccrine poromas have not previously been reported to occur on the eyelid. Compete surgical excision of this lesion proved to be curative, with no recurrence after 3 years follow up. Eccrine poromas are common benign tumours of the intraepidermal sweat duct unit. Sweat glands occur commonly on the eyelids and eccrine poroma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of eyelid tumours.

Selecting the Right Patient for Surgical Treatment of Hyperhidrosis.

This article presents a personal view of the indications for surgical treatment of patients with hyperhidrosis based on long clinical experience. Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy is the preferred opinion for palmar sweating. It is also useful when there is additional axillary sweating but is not the first choice for isolated armpit symptoms. Surgical treatment of craniofacial sweating is much more likely to be followed by undesirable side-effects.

Alterations of thermoregulation in Parkinson's disease.

Sweating and superficial vasodilator responses were studied in 22 patients suffering from Parkinson's disease in order to evaluate the thermoregulatory function. Sweating was evaluated on different areas of the body with a colorimetric method (Minor's method). The superficial vasodilatation at the level of the face was assessed after oral intake of nitroglycerin by means of telethermography. Sweating and superficial vasodilatation were reduced in parkinsonian patients compared with control subjects. Asymmetries in sweating and superficial vasodilator responses were also observed between the le…
