Broadband achromatic metalens design based on deep neural networks.

For the design of achromatic metalenses, one key challenge is to accurately realize the wavelength dependent phase profile. Because of the demand of tremendous simulations, traditional methods are laborious and time consuming. Here, a novel deep neural network (DNN) is proposed and applied to the achromatic metalens design, which turns complex design processes into regression tasks through fitting the target phase curves. During training, x-y projection pairs are put forward to solve the phase jump problem, and some additional phase curves are manually generated to optimize the DNN performance

Techniques and challenges of the expanded endoscopic endonasal access to the ventrolateral skull base during the "far-medial" and "extreme medial" approaches.

BACKGROUND: Expanding the ventrolateral skull base corridor from the midline of lower clivus to the petroclival fissure is a challenging endonasal surgical task. Resection of lytic lesions like chondrosarcoma can cause cranial nerve morbidities and injury of ICA, necessitating accurate knowledge of correlative endoscopic anatomy with stereotactic landmarks. METHODS: We describe an extended endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) for a right petroclival chondrosarcoma with the demonstration of ipsilateral surgical landmarks with contralateral normal correlates, using a stepwise comparative image-g

Object-based attentional facilitation and inhibition are neuropsychologically dissociated.

Salient peripheral cues produce a transient shift of attention which is superseded by a sustained inhibitory effect. Cueing part of an object produces an inhibitory cueing effect (ICE) that spreads throughout the object. In dynamic scenes the ICE stays with objects as they move. We examined object-centred attentional facilitation and inhibition in a patient with visual form agnosia. There was no evidence of object-centred attentional facilitation. In contrast, object-centred ICE was observed in 3 out of 4 tasks. These inhibitory effects were strongest where cues to objecthood were highly salie

Navon letters affect face learning and face retrieval.

Identifying the local letters of a Navon letter (a large letter made up of smaller different letters) prior to recognition causes impairment in accuracy, while identifying the global letters of a Navon letter causes an enhancement in recognition accuracy (Macrae & Lewis, 2002). This effect may result from a transfer-inappropriate processing shift (TIPS) (Schooler, 2002). The present experiment extends research on the underlying mechanism of this effect by exploring this Navon effect on face learning as well as face recognition. The results of the two experiments revealed that when the Navon ta

Do visual attentional factors contribute to phonological ability? studies in adult dyslexia.

A case study approach was taken to examine the role of visual attention and auditory memory processes in eight adults with dyslexia, all of whom demonstrated phonological difficulties. The participants were administered a battery of neuropsychological tests and participated in an attentional cueing experiment. Individual data revealed that, although one adult with dyslexia showed overt visual attention deficits on a visual search task, and five showed auditory working memory deficits, the difficulty that all of the adults with dyslexia had in common was with covert shifts of attention toward a

Attentional biases to internal and external sources of potential threat in social anxiety.

D. M. Clark and A. Wells (1995) proposed that a shift of attention inward toward interoceptive information is a central feature of social phobia. However, few studies have examined attentional biases toward internal physiological cues in social phobia. The current experiment assessed whether socially anxious individuals exhibit an attentional bias (a) toward cues for an internal source of potential threat (heart-rate information), (b) toward cues for an external source of potential threat (threatening faces) or (c) both. Ninety-one participants who were selected to form extreme groups based on

Selective anorexigenic effects of corticotropin releasing hormone in the rhesus monkey.

1. Rhesus monkeys were equipped with a novel intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) cannula system and trained to respond under operant schedules of food presentation or termination of stimuli associated with the delivery of shock (escape). 2. CRH decreased food-maintained behavior in a dose-related manner over the range of (0.3-10 micrograms/kg) but did not affect escape responding, demonstrating a selective effect on food-maintained responding. 3. This selective effect was related to the tendency for responding to stop after delivery of a food pellet when higher doses of CRH were given, consistent

Risk factors for occupational hand injury.

A case-control study of occupational hand injury was conducted in an effort to identify risk factors for disabling injury. Case employees in this study were municipal employees who had sustained restricted activity or lost work time as a result of hand injuries while at work. Each case employee was individually matched to a control employee of the same sex who held the same job and was at work on the same date and shift that the case employee's injury occurred. A conditional logistic regression model was used to adjust for confounding variables. Performing a task that was not a usual job requi

Visual attentional differences in psychology students with and without disabilities: a pilot study assessing the flanker task for prescriptive visual accommodative technologies.

INTRODUCTION: The percentage of college students with disabilities has been growing and has doubled in the last two decades; thus, students with disabilities are pursuing college degrees in increasing numbers. Unfortunately, this population growth has not been matched with growth in available accommodative technologies in institutions of higher learning. Colleges and universities often do not have resources to fund and provide specific accommodative technology and support for this steadily increasing population. What is worse is that there is also a lag in emergent assessment and screening too

sEMG-Based Muscle Synergy Analysis and Functional Driving Ratio for Quantitative Assessment During Robot-Assisted Upper-Limb Rehabilitation.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) provides a non-invasive measure of the neural drive transmitted from the central nervous system to muscles by capturing the spatiotemporal summation of motor unit action potentials at the skin surface, and is therefore widely used to study neuromuscular coordination during motor tasks. By reflecting neural drive transmitted from the central nervous system to peripheral muscles, sEMG provides valuable insights for investigating neuromuscular coordination during upper-limb motor tasks. Within the framework of modular motor control, muscle synergy analysis has been

Joint multi-task deep learning with cross-task attention for simultaneous lesion segmentation, detection, and severity grading of diabetic retinopathy on fundus images: An external validation study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) severity is graded from the type and distribution of retinal lesions, yet most automated methods address grading or lesion analysis in isolation. This study develops one framework that performs lesion segmentation, lesion detection, and DR grading together, evaluated within and across datasets. METHODS: A hierarchical multi-task network with a shared ResNet-50 encoder and a feature pyramid feeds three heads, in which a cross-task attention module conditions the grading representation on the predicted lesion features. The three losses are combined by homos

Subcortical and Cerebellar Compensation for Motor Control in Medial Frontal Glioblastoma: A Task-Based Connectivity Study.

Patients with medial frontal gliomas often retain motor function despite tumor infiltration of canonical planning hubs, a paradox suggesting unmapped compensatory networks. We used task-based connectivity analysis to reveal demand-dependent reorganization invisible to standard mapping, aiming to identify distributed systems critical for surgical preservation. Twenty-five WHO Grade IV left medial frontal glioma patients and 25 controls performed visually-paced finger-tapping (2 Hz) during 3 T fMRI. Generalized psychophysiological interaction (gPPI) analysis mapped task-modulated connectivity wi

Heightened protective decision-making related to physical, but not cognitive, effort in individuals with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition involving widespread pain, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction. Evidence-based interventions for fibromyalgia, such as education and exercise, often require prolonged, cognitive and/or physical effort, involving immediate costs (effort) for delayed benefits (improved pain/function). Initiation of, and adherence to, these interventions is often difficult, which may reflect pain-related alterations in an individual's attitudes towards effortful and delayed rewards. Here we explored whether individuals with fibromyalgia differed from age- and sex-matched pain-fr

Effects of levodopa on corticostriatal circuits supporting working memory in Parkinson's disease.

Working memory dysfunction is common in Parkinson's disease, even in its early stages, but its neural basis is debated. Working memory performance likely reflects a balance between corticostriatal dysfunction and compensatory mechanisms. We tested this hypothesis by examining working memory performance with a letter n-back task in 19 patients with mild-moderate Parkinson's disease and 20 demographically matched healthy controls. Parkinson's disease patients were tested after an overnight washout of their usual dopamine replacement therapy, and again after a standard dose of levodopa. FMRI was

Training-induced cognitive coupling emerges under sham but not active transcranial electrical stimulation in older adults: a triple-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Non-pharmacological methods including training and low-intensity transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) have demonstrated potential in delaying cognitive decline with aging. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of combining repeated tES targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex with task training on cognitive function in the healthy elderly. METHODS: In this triple-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study, fifty-five participants received ten 20-min sessions of concurrent task training and stimulation, including anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (t

Probability Distortion Depends on Choice Sequence in Rhesus Monkeys.

Humans and other primates share many decision biases, among them our subjective distortion of objective probabilities. When making choices between uncertain rewards we typically treat probabilities nonlinearly: overvaluing low probabilities of reward and undervaluing high ones. A growing body of evidence, however, points to a more flexible pattern of distortion than the classical inverse-S one, highlighting the effect of experimental conditions in shifting the weight assigned to probabilities, such as task feedback, learning, and attention. Here we investigated the role of sequence structure (

Electrophysiology in Distinguishing Functional Tremor from Organic Tremor: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Diagnostic Accuracy.

BACKGROUND: Functional tremor is the most common functional movement disorder. Delayed diagnosis can negatively impact outcomes, highlighting the need for early and accurate identification. Electrophysiological testing may support diagnosis when clinical assessment is inconclusive. However, the pooled diagnostic performance of electrophysiological tests has not been systematically synthesized, as most studies are based on limited samples. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to synthesize the diagnostic accuracy of electrophysiological tests in differentiating functional tremor from organic tremor. METHOD
