INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a difference in knee function between patients with quadriceps tendon rupture and patellar tendon rupture after acute surgical repair. Our hypothesis was that knee function would be similar between the two groups.
METHODS: The study population included 24 patients; 13 patients suffered from quadriceps tendon rupture and 11 patients from patellar tendon rupture. All patients underwent acute surgical repair using heavy non-absorbable trans-osseous sutures; another non-absorbable suture, passed through both retinaculum and arou

In this article, we report a case with spontaneous rupture of extensor pollicis longus tendon due to calcified extensor carpi radialis tendon group, which has not been published in the literature previously. Successful thumb extension was achieved in a 68-year-old male patient with the transfer of the extensor indicis proprius tendon at two months postoperatively. It appears that calcified extensor carpi radialis tendon group constitutes high risk for a possible attritional rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon.

UNLABELLED: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction can be performed with an autograft, which is most often harvested from the patient's hamstring tendon (HT) or patellar tendon (PT). However, autograft harvesting leads to morbidity that is by no means insignificant. A systematic review of literature was performed to define the incidence of complications related to graft harvesting and the methods to prevent these complications. In March 2017, a systemic review of literature was performed using the keywords"harvesting", "harvest", "morbidity", "complication", "cruciate ligament". No ti

UNLABELLED: We report outcomes of reconstruction of zone 1 or 2 flexor tendon injuries using a heterodigital hemi-tendon transfer of the flexor digitorum profundus in 23 fingers of 23 patients. At mean follow-up of 57 months, the mean total active motion of the three finger joints including the metacarpophalangeal joint was 128 degrees preoperatively and 229 degrees at final follow up. According to Strickland criteria, the function was excellent for 14 fingers, good for seven fingers and poor for two fingers. The subgroup analysis showed that the results were better in cases of primary surgery

CONCLUSION: We found that the AT was more externally rotated in ruptured than in nonruptured tendons at the ankle and that its distance to the sural nerve differed between the 2 cohorts in the A-P and M-L planes, likely due to increased AT rotation and swelling with ruptures. To minimize sural nerve injury and improve tendon targeting, we suggest a …

Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) is the most common tendon rupture injury. The consequences of ATR on metabolic activity of the Achilles tendon and ankle plantarflexors are unknown. Furthermore, the effects of eccentric rehabilitation on metabolic activity patterns of Achilles tendon and ankle plantarflexors in ATR patients have not been reported thus far. We present a case study demonstrating glucose uptake (GU) in the Achilles tendon, the triceps surae, and the flexor hallucis longus of a post-surgical ATR patient before and after a 5-month eccentric rehabilitation. At baseline, three months po

BACKGROUNDS: Pathology of the long head biceps tendon (LHBT) is associated with rotator cuff tears but whether the LHBT texture changes following supraspinatus tendon full thickness tear (SSFT) can be detected at the extra-articular segment remains unknown. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the morphological differences of the LHBT in shoulders with and without deficient rotator cuffs by using quantitative ultrasound.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We selected 145 cases with SSFT and 145 age-and- gender-matched controls. The width, thickness, flattening ratio, cross-sectional area, and echo

BACKGROUND: Acute patellar tendon ruptures with poor tissue quality. Ruptures that have been neglected are difficult to repair. Several surgical techniques for the repair of the patellar tendon have been reported, however, these techniques remain difficult because of contractures, adhesions, and atrophy of the quadriceps muscle after surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the cases of 2 Japanese patients (Case 1: a 16-year-old male and Case 2: a 43-year-old male) with patellar tendon ruptures who were treated by reconstruction using semitendinosus-gracilis (STG) tendons with preserved distal i…

This is a case report of a young athlete who sustained a partial tear of the patellar tendon after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with a bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) autograft. The injury, diagnostic workup, and decision-making process that lead to the choice of nonsurgical treatment are described. Furthermore, the rehabilitation process is described in detail. The patient returned to his previous level of sports activity and had a good clinical outcome as measured by range of motion, isokinetic quadriceps muscle strength testing, single leg hop testing, and the modified N

Muscle tendon unit (MTU) transfer is a common procedure performed to restore hand function after peripheral nerve or spinal cord injury. The principles of MTU transfer established for hand surgery can be adopted to optimize the dynamic excursion of the temporalis tendon transfer procedure for facial reanimation. Additionally, the force generating ability of a transferred MTU depends on the ideal length-tension relationship of the donor muscle. There are unclear guideline for selecting the ideal tension at which a transferred MTU will generate maximum force and excursion and current practice of

Addressing segmental loss of the Achilles tendon with overlying soft tissue loss is a serious challenge. We present a case of Achilles tendon reconstruction in a patient who had significant soft tissue loss as well as segmental loss of the tendon involving the calcaneal insertion. The staged reconstruction was undertaken with a combination of a sural fasciocutaneous flap and an Achilles tendon allograft with an attached calcaneal bone block.

We report the results of staged flexor tendon reconstruction in 12 patients (12 fingers) with neglected or failed primary repair of flexor tendon injuries in zone II. Injuries involved both flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) and flexor digitorum sublimis (FDS), with poor prognosis (Boyes grades II-IV). The procedure included placing a silicone rod and creating a loop between the FDP and FDS in the first stage and reflecting the latter as a pedicled graft through the pseudosheath created around the silicone rod in the second stage. At a mean follow-up of 18 months (range 12-30 months), results we

BACKGROUND: The current cadaver study was performed to evaluate and compare infraspinatus (ISP) vs. subscapularis (SSC) tendon transfer used for the repair of a large supraspinatus (SSP) rotator cuff defect. The main outcome measures were the range of motion and intramuscular length changes during motion.
METHODS: Thirteen fresh-frozen cadaver shoulders were used in the study. A supraspinatus defect extending to the apex of the humeral head (Patte size II) was created. Transosseous repair was then attempted with the ISP and with the SSC in all cases; intramuscular length changes were measured

Chronic multifocal closed rupture of the extensor hallucis longus tendon is an extremely rare injury. Previously, chronic multifocal partial rupture of the extensor hallucis longus tendon had not been reported. This case study reports one case of autogenous graft repair of a chronic multifocal rupture of the extensor hallucis longus tendon using a semitendinous tendon autograft.

In 12 patients, the extensor carpi radialis longus muscle tendon unit was elongated using the radial half of the parent tendon so that it could reach the site of new insertion, the A1-A2 pulley of flexor sheath or lateral bands, after routing the transfer through the carpal tunnel. The tendon was of appropriate thickness and could be split into two halves to be used as a graft. Further splitting of the tendon into four tails was possible. The transferred slips retained adequate strength to activate the fingers after the operation. It is suggested that splitting of the extensor carpi radialis l

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Ligamentoplasty using an autologous transplant provides an effective and long-lasting solution for anterior instability of the knee. The most widely used transplant is the mid third of the patellar tendon. The short- and long-term stability has been proven, but there are reports of morbidity at the donor site affecting the extensor system. Different attitudes have been proposed. Certain authors leave the site open, only suturing the peritendon. Others suture the two peripheral thirds together, either directly or after combing. This different therapeutic options may modify

Injuries to the radial collateral ligament of the MP joint of the thumb occur much less frequently than injuries to the ulnar collateral ligament. Ligament injury is usually a result of direct trauma. The resultant instability to the thumb usually impairs hand function. In acute lesions to the radial collateral ligament, direct repair is often possible. In cases of chronic radial joint instability, secondary ligament reconstruction with a free tendon graft, most commonly the palmaris longus tendon, is usually recommended. We describe another technique using the tendon insertion of the abductor

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The purpose of the present study was to assess the Bardot procedure in the treatment of equinovarus deformities of the foot in spastic hemiplegia. This procedure associates the fixation of the peroneus brevis distal tendon onto the tibialis anterior, heel-cord lengthening, and tenotomies of the flexores digitorum.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-six patients underwent this procedure between 1989 and 1996. The indication for surgery was equinovarus deformity in adult spastic hemiplegia. Preoperatively all the patients had an instability and 80.5 per cent of them had to wear a
