Severity Classification of Anxiety and Depression Using Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale and Patient Health Questionnaire: National Cross-Sectional Study Applying Classification and Regression Tree Models.

BACKGROUND: Scalable and accurate screening tools are critical for public mental health strategies, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). While the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) are widely used, their full application in large-scale programs can pose feasibility challenges. By contrast, shorter versions like GAD-2 and PHQ-2 reduce burdens but fail to capture symptom diversity. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to optimize screening for anxiety and depression severity using classification and regression tree (CART) models, ident

Anxiety and depression in war-displaced refugees: resilience as a moderating factor: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 resulted in the largest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II, with Poland hosting the highest number of displaced Ukrainians. Although the adverse mental health consequences of war-related trauma and forced displacement are well documented, the protective role of resilience in mitigating anxiety, depression, and psychological distress remains insufficiently explored. This study aimed to examine the moderating role of resilience in refugee mental health, while accounting for gender and physical and mental health status. METHO

Association between Salivary Cortisol and α-Amylase with the Psychological Profile of Patients with Oral Lichen Planus and Burning Mouth Syndrome: A Case-Control Study.

The aim of our study was to assess the relationship between the concentration/activity of salivary stress biomarkers (cortisol, α-amylase) and the psychological profile of patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and primary burning mouth syndrome (BMS). A total of 160 subjects participated in this case-control study: 60 patients with OLP; 60 patients with primary BMS; and 40 control subjects. Unstimulated whole saliva (UWS) was collected between 9 and 10 a.m. Salivary biomarkers were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). Psychological assessment was evaluated with the Depress

A normal colposcopy examination fails to provide psychological reassurance for women who have had low-grade abnormal cervical cytology.

OBJECTIVE: Worldwide, each year, large numbers of women are referred for colposcopy following low-grade abnormal cervical cytology. Many have no visible abnormality on examination. The risk of cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia grade 2/3 (CIN2/3) in these women is low. It is unknown whether, for women, a normal colposcopy resolves the anxiety which often follows the receipt of an abnormal cytology result. We investigated the prevalence of adverse psychological outcomes over 30 months following a normal colposcopy. METHODS: This cohort study was nested within the UK TOMBOLA randomized control

Comparing Etizolam and Music Distraction on Inferior Alveolar Nerve Block Success in Patients With Symptomatic Irreversible Pulpitis: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Anxious patients report more pain during endodontic therapy. This clinical trial aimed to assess the effect of etizolam vs music distraction on inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) success in patients with high dental anxiety and symptomatic irreversible pulpitis in a mandibular molar. METHODS: A total of 110 patients participated in this randomized clinical trial. Preoperative anxiety was assessed using the Modified Corah Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS). Patients were randomly allocated to a placebo, etizolam, or music distraction (MD) group. Patients in the placebo and etizolam group

Depression, anxiety, stress, and PTSD symptoms during the first and second COVID-19 waves: a comparison of elderly, middle-aged, and young people in Iran.

BACKGROUND: A widespread outbreak of epidemics like Covid-19 is a lethal threat to physical and mental health. Recent studies reported a higher prevalence of mental problems in younger individuals, contrary to the general assumption expected in older people. Therefore, it is necessary to compare anxiety, stress, depression and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) symptoms in different age groups during the Covid-19 crisis. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was performed (from Dec. 2020 to Feb. 2021) on three age groups of elderly, middle-aged and young people. Data were collected by D

Measuring perceived benefit and disease-related burden in young cancer survivors: validation of the Benefit and Burden Scale for Children (BBSC) in The Netherlands.

PURPOSE: Perceiving favourable changes from one's illness may go hand in hand with experiencing harmful psychosocial effects. Each of these constructs should be considered when examining children's levels of psychological adjustment following stressful life events. A paediatric instrument that accounts for both positive and negative impact of stressful events has not been investigated in The Netherlands before. The aim of the study was to investigate psychometric properties of the Dutch version of the Benefit and Burden Scale for Children (BBSC), a 20-item questionnaire that intends to measure

Why does vertigo become chronic after neuropathia vestibularis?

OBJECTIVE: Vertigo is one of the most frequent complaints in general medical practice and is often linked to psychiatric disorders. A longitudinal study of 67 patients with an acute vestibular disorder was undertaken to clarify if, after experiencing acute vestibular vertigo, certain patients have a higher likelihood of developing chronic, debilitating dizziness despite no evidence of a damaged peripheral vestibular system. METHOD: The severity of dizziness was determined in 67 patients with vestibular neuronitis, 6 months after their release from hospital, using the Vertigo Symptom Scale fro

Group interpersonal psychotherapy for generalized anxiety disorder: development process and a pilot test.

BACKGROUND: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a common and disabling psychiatric disorder that negatively impairs patients' quality of life. Studies suggest that inadequate consideration of interpersonal problems may contribute to the poor treatment response in psychotherapy for GAD. Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based psychosocial intervention that focuses on symptoms by improving interpersonal functioning, and research demonstrates that IPT is efficacious in treating social anxiety and panic disorders. To date, however, there are no studies examining IPT for patients w

Quality of life and mood assessment in conservatively treated cavernous malformation-related epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: To estimate the quality of life, anxiety, depression, and illness perception in patients with medically treated cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) and associated epilepsy. METHODS: Nonsurgically treated patients with CCM-related epilepsy (CRE) were included. Demographic, radiographic, and clinical features were assessed. All participants received established questionnaires (short-form 36 health survey, SF-36; hospital anxiety and depression score, HADS-A/D; visual analogue scale score, VAS) assessing the functional and psychosocial burden of disease. To some extent, calculated

Comparative Study of the Tell-Show-Do Technique With and Without a Dental Simulation Game to Reduce Pain and Anxiety in Pediatric Dental Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Dental anxiety and pain in pediatric patients remain significant barriers to effective treatment delivery. The Tell-Show-Do (TSD) technique is a widely accepted non-pharmacological behavior management strategy; however, its efficacy may be augmented by interactive digital interventions such as dental simulation games. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of the TSD technique with and without a dental simulation game in reducing pain and anxiety among pediatric dental patients. METHODS: This parallel-group randomized controlled trial enrolled 68 children aged 4-10 years re

Effect of CICARE communication nursing model combined with motivational psychological intervention in patients with post-intensive care unit syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) is a term used to describe a constellation of new or worsened dysfunctions in the physical, cognitive, or mental health status of critically ill patients after their discharge from the intensive care unit (ICU). These dysfunctions persist beyond the acute phase of illness and have a significant impact on both the patient and their family. Connect, Introduce, Communicate, Ask, Respond, Exit (CICARE) communication advocates that patients should be respected and accepted when receiving medical services. Clinicians should attach importance to the com

Spinal cord injury by clip-compression induces anxiety and depression-like behaviours in female rats: The role of the inflammatory response.

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) promotes long-term disability that affects mobility and functional independence. The spinal cord inflammatory response after the initial mechanical insult substantially impacts locomotor impairment and development of neuropsychiatric disorders, including anxiety and depression. However, these psychiatric events are scarcely investigated in females. This study investigated the anxiety/depression-like behaviours and inflammatory responses related to the production/release of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in female adult Wistar rats submitted to severe cl

Shielding against adversity: The impact of social support on heavy-drinking Hispanic young adult depression and anxiety.

Hispanic young adults in the United States exhibit high rates of depression, anxiety, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). A positive association exists between ACEs, depression, and anxiety among Hispanics. It is unknown if social support subtypes moderate the relationship between ACEs, depression, and anxiety. Data from 260 heavy-drinking Hispanic young adults, ages 19-30, were collected via various platforms (e.g., social media, web panels, flyering). We assessed for ACEs, domains of social support, depression, and anxiety. Ordinary least square regression models tested the main effect

Moderate Vigorous Physical Activity for Mental Health in Sedentary Middle-Aged Adults.

Anxiety and depression affect 32.3% of United States' adults. Guideline-based moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) enhances mental health by increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and an array of neuroendocrine factors that also mitigate cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. We examined the response of 14 variables, including depression (Beck Depression Inventory-II), anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory), resilience (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale [CD-RISC]), serum BDNF, and associated CVD risk factors (e.g., HbA1c, body composition, waist circumference) in sedentary
