Modality-specific frequency band activity during neural entrainment to auditory and visual rhythms.

Rhythm perception depends on the ability to predict the onset of rhythmic events. Previous studies indicate beta band modulation is involved in predicting the onset of auditory rhythmic events (Fujioka et al., 2009, 2012; Snyder & Large, 2005). We sought to determine if similar processes are recruited for prediction of visual rhythms by investigating whether beta band activity plays a role in a modality-dependent manner for rhythm perception. We looked at electroencephalography time-frequency neural correlates of prediction using an omission paradigm with auditory and visual rhythms. By using

The neuropsychology of first impressions: Evidence from Huntington's disease.

Impairments of emotion recognition have been widely documented in Huntington's disease (HD), but little is known concerning how these relate to other aspects of social cognition, including first impressions of traits such as trustworthiness and dominance. Here, we introduce a novel and sensitive method to investigate the ability to evaluate trustworthiness and dominance from facial appearance, with control tasks measuring ability to perceive differences between comparable stimuli. We used this new method together with standard tests of face perception to investigate social cognition in HD. We

Perception of children's faces with unilateral coronal synostosis--an eye-tracking investigation.

PURPOSE: Premature unilateral coronal craniosynostosis results in distinctive cranial and facial abnormalities of varying severity, including orbital dystopia and an abnormal head shape. As the face is affected, these children may encounter stigmatization. To avoid this scenario, many parents elect for their child to undergo surgical correction. Laypeople's perception of children with either untreated or treated unilateral coronal craniosynostosis (UCS) has not yet been objectively evaluated. METHODS: This study introduces eye tracking as an objective instrument in order to evaluate the perce

Different cortical dynamics in face and body perception: an MEG study.

Evidence from functional neuroimaging indicates that visual perception of human faces and bodies is carried out by distributed networks of face and body-sensitive areas in the occipito-temporal cortex. However, the dynamics of activity in these areas, needed to understand their respective functional roles, are still largely unknown. We monitored brain activity with millisecond time resolution by recording magnetoencephalographic (MEG) responses while participants viewed photographs of faces, bodies, and control stimuli. The cortical activity underlying the evoked responses was estimated with a

Copying you copying me: interpersonal motor co-ordination influences automatic imitation.

Moving in a co-ordinated fashion with another individual changes our behaviour towards them; we tend to like them more, find them more attractive, and are more willing to co-operate with them. It is generally assumed that this effect on behaviour results from alterations in representations of self and others. Specifically, through neurophysiological perception-action matching mechanisms, interpersonal motor co-ordination (IMC) is believed to forge a neural coupling between actor and observer, which serves to blur boundaries in conceptual self-other representations and causes positive views of

Visuo-spatial attention in younger and older adults: comparing performance on a series of computer-based tasks.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate the impact of aging on visual attention across four computer-based tasks. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational approach was utilised in this study. A battery of four computer-based tasks, with previously demonstrated sensitivity in detecting spatial bias, were employed to assess visual-attention between young and older adults. The duration of each task was approximately 5 min. Performance measures across all tasks included response time (ms) and accuracy (%) data. RESULTS: 125 participants, 51 younger (aged between 18 and 30) and 74 old

Impaired low-frequency temporal prediction links to psychomotor dysfunction in depression.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibits psychomotor retardation which concerns abnormal slowness of both thoughts and movements. While traditionally viewed as a motor deficit, the underlying cognitive mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated whether psychomotor disturbance in MDD reflects a disruption of temporal prediction, a cognitive capacity whereby the motor system provides predictive timing signals to sensory regions. We tested MDD subjects' (N = 38) ability to synchronize finger taps to rhythmic tone sequences across multiple temporal frequencies, compared with healthy controls

Effect of different cochlear implantation timings on long-term language development outcomes of pediatric unilateral cochlear implant cases.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation provides an opportunity for children with congenital severe to profound hearing loss to acquire spoken language. However, as multiple factors influence language outcomes after cochlear implantation, language development performance can vary between individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study participants (n = 150) were divided into three groups according to age at cochlear implantation: Group 1, 12-24 months; Group 2, 25-36 months; and Group 3, 37-48 months. The effect of age at implantation on auditory perception and language development performance was

Auditory neglect in children following perinatal stroke.

Auditory neglect has been found in adults with right hemisphere focal brain lesions following strokes. Visual and tactile neglect has been found in children following both left and right hemisphere lesions resulting from perinatal strokes. The present cross-sectional study assessed auditory neglect in children with early unilateral brain damage from perinatal stroke. Twenty-six children with perinatal stroke and matched controls participated. All were asked to identify the location of a pure tone presented in left or right auditory fields. We found that children who had experienced left hemisp

Beyond time and space: The effect of a lateralized sustained attention task and brain stimulation on spatial and selective attention.

The Theory of Visual Attention (TVA) provides a mathematical formalisation of the "biased competition" account of visual attention. Applying this model to individual performance in a free recall task allows the estimation of 5 independent attentional parameters: visual short-term memory (VSTM) capacity, speed of information processing, perceptual threshold of visual detection; attentional weights representing spatial distribution of attention (spatial bias), and the top-down selectivity index. While the TVA focuses on selection in space, complementary accounts of attention describe how attenti

The effects of short-term and long-term learning on the responses of lateral intraparietal neurons to visually presented objects.

The lateral intraparietal area (LIP) is thought to play an important role in the guidance of where to look and pay attention. LIP can also respond selectively to differently shaped objects. We sought to understand to what extent short-term and long-term experience with visual orienting determines the responses of LIP to objects of different shapes. We taught monkeys to arbitrarily associate centrally presented objects of various shapes with orienting either toward or away from a preferred spatial location of a neuron. The training could last for less than a single day or for several months. We

Effects of tonal language background on tests of temporal sequencing in children.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of the present study were to determine the effects of language background on the performance of the pitch pattern sequence test (PPST) and duration pattern sequence test (DPST). As temporal order sequencing may be affected by age and working memory, these factors were also studied. DESIGN: Performance of tonal and non-tonal language speakers on PPST and DPST were compared. STUDY SAMPLE: Twenty-eight native Mandarin (tonal language) speakers and twenty-nine native Malay (non-tonal language) speakers between seven to nine years old participated in this study. RESULTS: The

Lack of multisensory integration in hemianopia: no influence of visual stimuli on aurally guided saccades to the blind hemifield.

In patients with visual hemifield defects residual visual functions may be present, a phenomenon called blindsight. The superior colliculus (SC) is part of the spared pathway that is considered to be responsible for this phenomenon. Given that the SC processes input from different modalities and is involved in the programming of saccadic eye movements, the aim of the present study was to examine whether multimodal integration can modulate oculomotor competition in the damaged hemifield. We conducted two experiments with eight patients who had visual field defects due to lesions that affected t

Short- and long-term rhythmic interventions: perspectives for language rehabilitation.

This paper brings together different perspectives on the investigation and understanding of temporal processing and temporal expectations. We aim to bridge different temporal deficit hypotheses in dyslexia, dysphasia, or deafness in a larger framework, taking into account multiple nested temporal scales. We present data testing the hypothesis that temporal attention can be influenced by external rhythmic auditory stimulation (i.e., musical rhythm) and benefits subsequent language processing, including syntax processing and speech production. We also present data testing the hypothesis that pho

Naming Speed of Adolescents and Young Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Differences in Alphanumeric Versus Color/Object Naming.

This study investigated the performance of adolescents and young adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Reading Disorder (RD), and ADHD/RD on measures of alphanumeric and nonalphanumeric naming speed and the relationship between naming speed and academic achievement. The sample (N = 203) included students aged 17-28 years diagnosed with ADHD (n = 83), RD (n = 71), or ADHD/RD (n = 49). Individuals with ADHD performed significantly faster on measures of alphanumeric naming compared with RD and comorbid groups and, within group, demonstrated significantly quicker naming of l

Aging alters visual processing of objects and shapes in inferotemporal cortex in monkeys.

Visual perception declines with age. Perceptual deficits may originate not only in the optical system serving vision but also in the neural machinery processing visual information. Since homologies between monkey and human vision permit extrapolation from monkeys to humans, data from young, middle aged and old monkeys were analyzed to show age-related changes in the neuronal activity in the inferotemporal cortex, which is critical for object and shape vision. We found an increased neuronal response latency, and a decrease in the stimulus selectivity in the older animals and suggest that these

Temporal-order judgment of audiovisual events involves network activity between parietal and prefrontal cortices.

Our perception of the temporal order of everyday external events depends on the integrated sensory information in the brain. Our understanding of the brain mechanism for temporal-order judgment (TOJ) of unisensory events, particularly in the visual domain, is advanced. In case of multisensory events, however, there are unanswered questions. Here, by using physically synchronous and asynchronous auditory-visual events in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments, we identified the brain network that is associated with the perception of the temporal order of multisensory events. Evidence for enhanced multisensory facilitation with stimulus relevance: an electrophysiological investigation.

Currently debate exists relating to the interplay between multisensory processes and bottom-up and top-down influences. However, few studies have looked at neural responses to newly paired audiovisual stimuli that differ in their prescribed relevance. For such newly associated audiovisual stimuli, optimal facilitation of motor actions was observed only when both components of the audiovisual stimuli were targets. Relevant auditory stimuli were found to significantly increase the amplitudes of the event-related potentials at the occipital pole during the first 100 ms post-stimulus onset, though

Paced finger-tapping abnormalities in bipolar disorder indicate timing dysfunction.

OBJECTIVES: Theoretical and empirical evidence suggests that impaired time perception and the neural circuitry contributing to internal timing mechanisms may contribute to severe psychiatric disorders, including mood disorders. The structures that are involved in subsecond timing, i.e., cerebellum and basal ganglia, have also been implicated in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder. However, the timing of subsecond intervals has infrequently been studied in this population. METHODS: Paced finger-tapping tasks have been used to characterize internal timing processes in neuropsychiatric disor…

Magnocellular visual evoked potential delay with high autism spectrum quotient yields a neural mechanism for altered perception.

Everyone has autistic characteristics to a greater or lesser degree, encapsulated in the Autism Spectrum Quotient, a scale that measures the degree to which an adult of normal intelligence displays traits associated with autism spectrum disorders. Recent psychophysical analyses of autism spectrum disorders point to superior local processing, and impaired or ignored global and contextual processing. The aim of this study was to test whether low- and high-scoring individuals on the Autism Spectrum Quotient differ on a measure of local and global processing, motion processing and visual pathway i
