Decoding user satisfaction during reading of pre-defined question-answer pairs: BCI approach using delta and gamma EEG.

INTRODUCTION: The rapid proliferation of large language models (LLMs) has intensified the need for robust evaluation frameworks to align artificial intelligence (AI) behavior with human expectations. While current reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) strategies heavily rely on explicit, post-hoc self-reports, these metrics are fundamentally limited by subjective biases and user non-compliance. METHODS: To address this, the current study presents a novel brain-computer interface (BCI) framework that systematically characterizes the continuous, implicit neural correlates of user sa

Auscultation System for Acquisition of Vascular Sounds - Towards Sound-Based Monitoring of the Carotid Artery.

INTRODUCTION: Atherosclerotic diseases of the carotid are a primary cause of cerebrovascular events such as stroke. For the diagnosis and monitoring angiography, ultrasound- or magnetic resonance-based imaging is used which requires costly hardware. In contrast, the auscultation of carotid sounds and screening for bruits - audible patterns related to turbulent blood flow - is a simple examination with comparably little technical demands. It can indicate atherosclerotic diseases and justify further diagnostics but is currently subjective and examiner dependent. METHODS: We propose an easy-to-u

Analysis and visualization of quantitative proteomics data using FragPipe-Analyst.

The FragPipe computational proteomics platform is gaining widespread popularity among the proteomics research community because of its fast processing speed and user-friendly graphical interface. Although FragPipe produces well-formatted output tables that are ready for analysis, there is still a need for an easy-to-use and user-friendly downstream statistical analysis and visualization tool. FragPipe-Analyst addresses this need by providing an R shiny web server to assist FragPipe users in conducting downstream analyses of the resulting quantitative proteomics data. It supports major quantifi

Semi-automatic segmentation and detection of aorta dissection wall in MDCT angiography.

Aorta dissection is a serious vascular disease produced by a rupture of the tunica intima of the vessel wall that can be lethal to the patient. The related diagnosis is strongly based on images, where the multi-detector CT is the most generally used modality. We aim at developing a semi-automatic segmentation tool for aorta dissections, which will isolate the dissection (or flap) from the rest of the vascular structure. The proposed method is based on different stages, the first one being the semi-automatic extraction of the aorta centerline and its main branches, allowing an subsequent automa

Real time sound analysis for medical remote monitoring.

The increase of aging population in Europe involves more people living alone at home with an increased risk of home accidents or falls. In order to prevent or detect a distress situation in the case of an elderly people living alone, a remote monitoring system based on the sound environment analysis can be used. We have already proposed a system which monitors the sound environment, identifies everyday life sounds and distress expressions in order to participate to an alarm decision. This first system uses a classical sound card on a PC or embedded PC allowing only one channel monitor. In this

Improving combat medic learning using a personal computer-based virtual training simulator.

The new military occupational specialty for combat medics, the 91W, requires that all medics successfully pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians examination. The objective of this study was to supplement standard emergency medical technician training with a three-dimensional, computer-based, virtual training simulator and to assess whether scores and pass rates could be increased. Combat medics (N=167) were selected for training through the usual noncommissioned officer unit selection process and were randomized by cohort to the training simulator. Results showed no signif

Diagnosis of anomalous origin of the right coronary artery using multislice computed tomography: evaluation of possible causes of myocardial ischemia.

Anomalous origin of the right coronary artery (RCA) is a rare condition, but may cause myocardial ischemia and sudden death. Multislice computed tomography, which allows three-dimensional visualization of the coronary artery with high spatial resolution, may be the most promising imaging modality for diagnosing this anomaly. We describe a patient with anomalous origin of the RCA arising from the left sinus of Valsalva. Volume rendering, and axial and curved multiplanar images showed stenosis in the proximal portion of the RCA that coursed between the aorta and the pulmonary artery, and an acut

Work toward real-time control of a cortical neural prothesis.

Implantable devices that interact directly with the human nervous system have been gaining acceptance in the field of medicine since the 1960's. More recently, as is noted by the FDA approval of a deep brain stimulator for movement disorders, interest has shifted toward direct communication with the central nervous system (CNS). Deep brain stimulation (DBS) can have a remarkable effect on the lives of those with certain types of disabilities such as Parkinson's disease, Essential Tremor, and dystonia. To correct for many of the motor impairments not treatable by DBS (e.g. quadriplegia), it wou

Automatic Transportation Mode Recognition on Smartphone Data Based on Deep Neural Networks.

In the last few years, with the exponential diffusion of smartphones, services for turn-by-turn navigation have seen a surge in popularity. Current solutions available in the market allow the user to select via an interface the desired transportation mode, for which an optimal route is then computed. Automatically recognizing the transportation system that the user is travelling by allows to dynamically control, and consequently update, the route proposed to the user. Such a dynamic approach is an enabling technology for multi-modal transportation planners, in which the optimal path and its as

Visual Scene Understanding for Enhanced EMG Gesture Recognition.

This work presents a multimodal approach combining electromyography (EMG) and computer vision (CV) for robust real-time gesture recognition in a real-world setting. A context-aware framework is proposed for myoelectric prosthesis control, wherein EMG hand gesture recognition is augmented by the visual detection of objects of interest in a scene, effectively mitigating risks of false movements. By supporting EMG gesture predictions produced by a Siamese deep convolution neural network (SDCNN) with context derived from object detection using a tailored YOLO computer vision model, the system prev

The recount3 Python package for programmatic access to uniformly processed RNA-seq data.

The recount3 online resource provides tens of thousands of uniformly processed RNA-seq samples across human and mouse from major sequencing repositories like the Sequence Read Archive. While access to these datasets has traditionally been centered in the R/Bioconductor ecosystem, the growing prominence of Python in bioinformatics and machine learning necessitates native, efficient tooling for Python users. Therefore, we present the recount3 Python package with robust application programming interface (API) and command-line interface (CLI) for discovering, downloading, and materializing recount

[Development of a computed tomography data-based Vibrant Bonebridge viewer].

BACKGROUND: Because of the anatomy of the mastoid and the size of the actuator, positioning of the Vibrant Bonebridge B-FMT can be difficult without prior evaluation of the individual computed tomography (CT) scan of the temporal bone. Development of a user-friendly CT data viewer to enable positioning of the B-FMT in the temporal bone model, whilst identifying individual, potential anatomic conflicts and offering possible solutions could provide a useful tool for preoperative positioning. OBJECTIVES: Aim of the study was to define the requirements of a Vibrant Bonebridge viewer and construct

Innovative procedure for computer-assisted genioplasty: three-dimensional cephalometry, rapid-prototyping model and surgical splint.

The authors present a new procedure of computer-assisted genioplasty. They determined the anterior, posterior and inferior limits of the chin in relation to the skull and face with the newly developed and validated three-dimensional cephalometric planar analysis (ACRO 3D). Virtual planning of the osteotomy lines was carried out with Mimics (Materialize) software. The authors built a three-dimensional rapid-prototyping multi-position model of the chin area from a medical low-dose CT scan. The transfer of virtual information to the operating room consisted of two elements. First, the titanium pl

A novel, inexpensive method of image coregistration for applications in image-guided surgery using augmented reality.

OBJECTIVE: Augmented reality (AR) is a technique in which an overlay of a virtual image to a live picture is performed to create a new image in which both original images coexist as a single image. This results in the visualization of internal structures through overlying tissues. The objective was to describe an easy, inexpensive, and successful method to coregister with AR in an image-guided surgery setting using the resources at hand. METHODS: Cortical information was obtained with a volumetric acquisition of 200 0.8-mm thick, cerebral magnetic resonance imaging scans in an axial T1-weight
