Deep learning classification of reading disability with regional brain volume features.

Developmental reading disability is a prevalent and often enduring problem with varied mechanisms that contribute to its phenotypic heterogeneity. This mechanistic and phenotypic variation, as well as relatively modest sample sizes, may have limited the development of accurate neuroimaging-based classifiers for reading disability, including because of the large feature space of neuroimaging datasets. An unsupervised learning model was used to reduce deformation-based data to a lower-dimensional manifold and then supervised learning models were used to classify these latent representations in a

Relationship between excitability, plasticity and thickness of the motor cortex in older adults.

The relationship between brain structure, cortical physiology, and learning ability in older adults is of particular interest in understanding mechanisms of age-related cognitive decline. Only a few studies addressed this issue so far, yielding mixed results. Here, we used comprehensive multiple regression analyses to investigate associations between brain structure on the one hand, i.e., cortical thickness (CT), fractional anisotropy (FA) of the pyramidal tract and individual coil-to-cortex distance, and cortical physiology on the other hand, i.e. motor cortex excitability and long-term poten

Instruction during lifting: How analogy and explicit instruction influence performance and motor control.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the effects of analogy (ANA) and explicit (EXP) verbal instruction on motor performance and muscle activation during a weightlifting task. Traditional coaching strategies often rely on explicit cues; however, recent research suggests that analogy-based instructions may offer a more efficient route to motor learning by promoting implicit control. SCOPE: Twenty novice participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (ANA, EXP, or control), with the sequence of conditions counterbalanced across three consecutive days. Day 1 involved familiarizat

Association between cognitive function, socio-clinical factors and biomarkers among Panamanian adults living with and without HIV: A cross-sectional study.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection disrupts brain function, producing cognitive deficits that impair daily functioning, reduce quality of life, and worsen clinical outcomes. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of neurocognitive impairment among people with HIV in Panama, and to investigate the association between cognitive function with socio-clinical factors and biomarkers. A community-based cross-sectional study recruited 193 and 203 people with and without HIV, respectively. Participants provided blood samples and underwent a clinical interview comprised of functionality

Which client with generalized anxiety disorder benefits from a mindfulness ecological momentary intervention versus a self-monitoring app? Developing a multivariable machine learning predictive model.

Precision medicine methods (machine learning; ML) can identify which clients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) benefit from mindfulness ecological momentary intervention (MEMI) vs. self-monitoring app (SM). We used randomized controlled trial data of MEMI vs. SM for GAD (N = 110) and tested three ML models to predict one-month follow-up reliable improvement in GAD severity, perseverative cognitions (PC), trait mindfulness (TM), and executive function (EF). Eleven baseline predictors were tested regarding differential reliable change from MEMI vs. SM (age, sex, race, EF errors, inhibitory

Auditory-motor mapping training: Testing an intonation-based spoken language treatment for minimally verbal children with autism spectrum disorder.

We tested an intonation-based speech treatment for minimally verbal children with autism (auditory-motor mapping training, AMMT) against a nonintonation-based control treatment (speech repetition therapy, SRT). AMMT involves singing, rather than speaking, two-syllable words or phrases. In time with each sung syllable, therapist and child tap together on electronic drums tuned to the same pitches, thus coactivating shared auditory and motor neural representations of manual and vocal actions, and mimicking the "babbling and banging" stage of typical development. Fourteen children (three females)

Bifrontal electroconvulsive therapy changed regional homogeneity and functional connectivity of left angular gyrus in major depressive disorder.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a rapid and effective treatment for MDD. However, the mechanism of ECT for MDD has not been clarified. In this study, we used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) to explore the mechanism of ECT. Two groups of subjects were recruited: healthy controls (HCs) and MDD patients who received bifrontal ECT. MDD patients and HCs underwent rs-fMRI scans and clinical assessments (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, Rey-Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT), and the verbal fluency test). Regional homogeneity (ReHo) and functional connectivity wer…

Variation in early number skills and mathematics achievement: Implications from cognitive profiles of children with or without Turner syndrome.

Individuals with Mathematics Learning Disabilities have persistent mathematics underperformance but vary with respect to their cognitive profiles. The present study examined mathematics ability and achievement, and associated mathematics-specific numerical skills and domain-general cognitive abilities, in young children with Turner syndrome compared to their matched peers. We utilized two independent peer groups so that group comparisons would account for verbal skills, a hypothesized strength of girls with Turner syndrome, and nonsymbolic magnitude comparison skills, a hypothesized difference

Severe childhood trauma and clinical and neurocognitive features in schizotypal personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Literature suggests that childhood trauma increases vulnerability for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, including schizotypal personality disorder (SPD). Yet, it remains unexplored whether childhood trauma predicts symptom load and the level of neurocognitive functioning in SPD. METHOD: We included 225 individuals with SPD and 127 healthy controls. Childhood trauma was evaluated using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, and schizotypal traits were assessed using the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire. Standard neurocognitive assessments covered six cognitive domains. RESULTS: A

Cerebellar tasks do not distinguish between children with developmental dyslexia and children with intellectual disability.

This paper explored the claim that only children with developmental dyslexia, whose reading ability is discrepant from their average general reasoning ability show specific deficits in motor tasks assessing cerebellar functioning (Fawcett et al., 2001, Cerebellar tests differentiate between groups of poor readers with and without IQ discrepancy. J. Learning Disabilities, 34, 119) and rapid serial naming (RAN, Wolf & Bowers, 1999, The double deficit hypothesis for the developmental dyslexias. J. Educ. Psychol., 91, 1). A video feedback-based tobacco cessation counselling course for undergraduates-preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: Hungary has one of the highest rates of tobacco use and decayed, missing and filled teeth in Europe, and the number of lung cancer-related deaths per annum is amongst the highest globally. As it is estimated that the rate of smokers who see their dentist or physician annually is about 70%, to involve all healthcare providers in tobacco intervention seems to be a promising strategy to reduce tobacco use in countries like Hungary. Such an intervention should obviously include the dental health team. It has already been suggested by experts on this topic that instruction in tobacco us

A new family with an SLC9A6 mutation expanding the phenotypic spectrum of Christianson syndrome.

Using targeted next generation sequencing, we have identified a splicing mutation (c.526-9_526-5del) in the SLC9A6 gene in a 9-year-old boy with mild intellectual disability (ID), microcephaly, and social interaction disabilities. This intronic microdeletion leads to the skipping of exon 3 and to an in-frame deletion of 26 amino acids in the TM4 domain. It segregates with cognitive impairment or learning difficulties in other members of the family. Mutations in SLC9A6 have been reported in X-linked Christianson syndrome associating severe to profound intellectual deficiency and an Angelman-lik

Sex differences in Hippocampal Memory and Learning following Neonatal Brain Injury: Is There a Role for Estrogen Receptor-α?

Neonatal encephalopathy due to hypoxia-ischemia (HI) leads to severe, life-long morbidities in thousands of neonates born in the USA and worldwide each year. Varying capacities of long-term episodic memory, verbal working memory, and learning can present without cerebral palsy and have been associated with the severity of neonatal encephalopathy sustained at birth. Among children who sustain a moderate degree of HI at birth, girls have larger hippocampal volumes compared to boys. Clinical studies indicate that female neonatal brains are more resistant to the effects of neonatal HI, resulting i

Social competence and friendship formation in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Friendship formation (making friends, keeping friends, and having successful interactions with peers and adults) constitutes a critical developmental-social milestone for adolescents. This process can be especially challenging for adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, whose attentional problems may negatively affect their social skills (verbal and nonverbal language) and who fail to appreciate the complexity and nuances of adolescent communication. They often do not respond to feedback cues. They may be perceived as "immature," lacking empathy, and loners and losers, they
