Vergence prism adaptability was evaluated in subjects with high symptomatic and asymptomatic heterophoria and compared to individuals with a heterophoria within normal range (the control group). A computer haploscope was used to measure phoria values and changes in the eye position after introducing 6 prism diopters base out in front of the right eye. A 24 year-old Malay lady presented with high grade fever, myalgia, generalized rashes, severe headache and was positive for dengue serology test. Her lowest platelet count was 45 × 10(9) cells/L. She complained of sudden onset of painlessness, profound loss of vision bilaterally 7 days after the onset of fever. OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of scleral expansion surgery in the treatment of human presbyopia.
DESIGN: Experimental study.
PARTICIPANTS: Three preoperative presbyopic subjects, three postoperative presbyopic subjects, and three young control subjects.

AIMS: To develop and describe an objective classification system for the spatial patterns of visual field loss found in glaucoma.
METHODS: The 560 Humphrey visual field analyser (program 24-2) records were used to train an artificial neural network (ANN). The type of network used, a Kohonen self organising feature map (SOM), was configured to organise the visual field defects into 25 classes of superior visual field loss and 25 classes of inferior visual field loss. We measured spatial localization (using an open-loop pointing task) monocularly in each eye of eight patients undergoing unilateral strabismus surgery. Most of these patients had some degree of binocular vision. We found that, in most cases, changes in spatial localization produced by surgery on the operated eye paralleled those found in the other eye, both in magnitude and duration. Unilateral surgery can have central effects on egocentric localization.

The flicker test, introduced by Aulhorn is a new simple method to detect acute optic neuritis. We examined 24 patients suffering from acute optic neuritis. 23 patients showed a pathological result. In 179 subjects (patients with other ophthalmological diseases and healthy persons) the flicker test always showed normal results. After restitution of acute optic neuritis the results of the flicker test return to normal while the visual evoked responses remain pathological in many cases. The Friedmann Visual Field Analyser Mark II is evaluated with a group of 301 normal eyes, 155 of which had an induced visual field defect. Measures of sensitivity and specificity are calculated from these data by criteria similar to those used by other researchers. The inadequacies of using pass/fail criteria in the clinical situation are discussed, and a solution is proposed in which each field response is scored and the score compared with those from normal and defective populations. An example is given of how this form of analysis could be incorporated into the clinical situation.
