Ecologically-grounded observations offer unique insights into the embodied and embedded nature of infant learning.

Scientists and laypeople alike have long been inspired by infants' acquisition of skills-from walking to talking to interacting with objects. Indeed, complementary aims of developmental science are to characterize infants' changing skills and identify the experiences that propel learning. Our observations of infants' unconstrained behavior in the ecologically-valid home environment have led to new insights on learning that integrate theory at the intersection of Piaget's writings on embodied action and Vygotsky's writings on the socially embedded nature of learning. These insights formed the b…

War, politics, and voice: the vocal fold paralysis of George Orwell.

BACKGROUND: In 1936, like many individuals who felt the menace of fascism, George Orwell traveled to Spain to lend his support to the cause … nd. His recovery followed a course in many ways typical for patients with vocal fold paralysis. His writings leave us a unique and extraordinary account of the experience of being shot, of the medical care of the day, of the handicap of paralytic dysphonia, and of survival and heroism under extraordinary circumstances.

Interpretable Features for the Assessment of Neurodegenerative Diseases Through Handwriting Analysis.

Motor dysfunction is a common sign of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), but may be difficult to detect, especially in the early stages. In this work, we examine the behavior of a wide array of interpretable features extracted from the handwriting signals of 113 subjects performing multiple tasks on a digital tablet, as part of the Neurological Signals dataset. The aim is to measure their effectiveness in characterizing NDs, including AD and PD. To this end, task-agnostic and task-specific features are extracted from 14 distinct task…

Literacy Profiles in Twice-Exceptional Preadolescents with Intellectual Giftedness and Dyslexia.

Research on twice-exceptional students, particularly those with co-occurring intellectual giftedness and dyslexia, remains limited and conceptually fragmented. This study examines the reading- and writing-related profiles of these students by comparing three groups: gifted students without dyslexia (G), gifted students with dyslexia (G-D), and dyslexic students without intellectual giftedness (D). The sample consisted of 133 Spanish-speaking primary school students (Grades 3-6). The results revealed a distinct and non-linear performance pattern. G-D students exhibited marked difficulties in lo…

Postcaesarean Pseudoaneurysm of Uterine Artery Causing Secondary Postpartum Hemorrhage Managed With Embolization: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Secondary postpartum hemorrhage (SPPH) is defined as the hemorrhage occurring beyond 24 h and within the puerperium (6 weeks). The incidence of SPPH is 0.21%. Pseudoaneurysm of the uterine artery is a rare cause of SPPH following the caesarean or vaginal delivery and is reported to be developed as a complication of vascular trauma during caesarian section or after uterine curettage and pelvic surgery. Prompt diagnosis and early management should be done to avoid the complications. METHODS: An informed written consent was taken from a patient for writing the case. A brief …

A quantitative investigation of the handwriting kinematics in response to STN-DBS in Parkinson's disease patients.

AIM: The aim of this manuscript was to investigate possible handwriting alterations focusing on micrographia in PD patients with STN-DBS in distinct stimulation conditions. METHODS: All consecutive PD patients with STN-DBS therapy who visited our movement disorder center between October 2023 and December 2023 and agreed to participate in the study were enrolled. Extensive clinical assessments including various scales were performed. The MDS-UPDRS-III-stimulation-'off' and 'on' scores were evaluated. The handwriting parameters including letter area, writing time and pressure were measured on a…

Exploring Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students' Engagement in Reading Comprehension Strategies in Elementary School.

The reading level of a number of students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) is lower than that of non-DHH students because DHH children … explicit instruction was associated with more structured strategies, such as summarizing in SSL and writing responses based upon the texts. The results demonstrated that retelling and summarizing activities using SSL emerged as a particularly significant strategy for reading comprehension. Future research should examine instructional methods that provide …

Dysgraphia Differs Between Children With Developmental Coordination Disorder and/or Reading Disorder.

Handwriting deficits, or dysgraphia, are present in several neurodevelopmental disorders. To investigate whether dysgraphia differs according to the associated disorder, we performed a detailed analysis of handwriting in a group of French children with developmental coordination disorders (DCD), reading disorder (RD), or comorbid RD and DCD. Handwriting deficits were investigated at the product (quality of the trace) and the process (movement that generates the trace) levels. Nineteen children with singular RD (among which eight with dysgraphia), 13 children with singular DCD (among which seve…

Word reading transfer in two distinct languages in reading interventions: How Chinese-English bilingual children with reading difficulties learn to read.

PURPOSE: Skills developed from literacy training in L1 are shown to transfer to reading in L2 when both languages involve an alphabetic writing system. However, transfer of literacy skills between a logographic L1 and an alphabetic L2 is less studied. This study examined whether the gain in literacy skills after an 8-week training on 1) Chinese character recognition or 2) English phonics, may generalize across the two languages in Chinese elementary students with reading disabilities. METHODS: Chinese-speaking students identified with reading difficulties were randomly assigned to the Chinese…

A beginning exploration of text generation abilities in university students with a history of reading difficulties.

There is a fundamental lack of understanding of how university students with a history of reading difficulties perform on various demanding literacy tasks. We compared the text generation skills, measured with timed summary writing and proofreading tasks, of university students with a history of reading difficulties to those of students with no such history. We further examined whether between-group differences in text generation skills remained after controlling for transcription skills (spelling and handwriting fluency), word reading, and reading comprehension. Forty-six university students …

Understanding Comorbidity Between Specific Learning Disabilities.

Current definitions of specific learning disability (SLD) identify a heterogeneous population that includes individuals with weaknesses in reading, math, or writing, and these academic difficulties often co-occur in many of the same individuals. The Colorado Learning Disabilities Research Center (CLDRC) is an interdisciplinary, multisite research program that uses converging levels of analysis to understand the genetic and environmental etiology, neuropsychology, and developmental outcomes of SLDs in reading (RD), math (MD), and writing (WD), along with the comorbidity between these SLDs and o…
