Immunogenicity and safety of yellow fever vaccination for 102 HIV-infected patients.

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever vaccine (17DV) has been investigated incompletely in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients, and adequate immunogenicity and safety are of concern in this population. METHODS: In the Swiss HIV Cohort Study, we identified 102 patients who received 17DV while they were HIV infected. We analyzed neutralization titers (NTs) after 17DV administration using the plaque reduction neutralization test. NTs of 1:>or=10 were defined as reactive, and those of 1:<10 were defined as nonreactive, which was considered to be nonprotective. The results were compared with d…

[Estimated operational costs of vaccination campaign to combat yellow fever in Abidjan].

A cost effectiveness study was conducted with the main objective to assess the operational costs of a vaccination campaign against yellow fever organised and implemented in Abidjan from September 21st to October 2nd, 2001. The study was carried out from the perspective of the health authorities. Data was collected retrospectively on all information related to resources needed and required activities. The justification of the monetary value of resources was provided with written proof and receipts as well as other supporting documents. The coverage achieved was 91.33% with 2 584 360 doses of va…

Epizootics of yellow fever in Venezuela (2004-2005): an emerging zoonotic disease.

Epidemics and epizootics of yellow fever (YF) have been occurring in the border area of eastern Colombia and western Venezuela since 2003; for this reason many epidemiological control measures were adopted by the Ministry of Health (MOH) trying to prevent their spreading. These activities included monkey deaths surveillance as well as immunization of susceptible individuals with YF vaccine. In this setting, we analyzed epidemiological and epizootical issues related to YF in Venezuela during 2004-2005. In this period, YF epizootics occurred initially without geographical links to the 2003 outbr…

The changing epidemiology of yellow fever and dengue, 1900 to 2003: full circle?

Yellow fever and dengue are old diseases, having caused major epidemics in centuries past. Both were effectively controlled in the mid 1900s, yellow fever in Francophone Africa by vaccination and yellow fever and dengue in the Americas by effective control of the principal urban vector of both viruses, Aedes aegypti. In the last 25 years of the 20th century, however, there was a resurgence of yellow fever in Africa, and of dengue worldwide. The factors responsible for this resurgence are discussed, as are current options for prevention and control.

Critical period for pupal commitment in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Changes in ecdysteroid levels that lead to commitment of pupal and adult development were studied in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Application of juvenile hormone at the time of pupal commitment usually results in delay or blockage of pupal and adult development. With methoprene, a juvenile hormone mimic, the JH sensitive period was found to be within 19 h after ecdysis to the fourth instar, at which time methoprene treatment caused a delay in pupation. Consistent with this observation, there was a small peak of ecdysteroid levels between 14 and 28 h after ecdysis to the fourth ins…

[Producing an immunizing agent: images from the production of a yellow fever vaccine].

Through analysis of a set of photographs on the production of a yellow fever vaccine in Brazil, the article discusses the use of images as a research source in the history of medicine and public health. part of a historical archive belonging to the Fundação Rockefeller, stored at the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fiocruz the photographs were produced between the 1930s and 1940s by the Fundação Rockefeller and Brazil's National Yellow Fever Service, institutions then responsible for research and control of the disease in Brazil. The article raises some questions generally posed by those who employ image…

The centennial of the Yellow Fever Commission and the use of informed consent in medical research.

The year 2000 marked the centennial of the discovery of the mode of transmission of yellow fever. Informed consent was systematically used for the first time in research. This process was the result of a complex social phenomenon involving the American Public Health Association, the US and Spanish Governments, American and Cuban scientists, the media, and civilian and military volunteers. The public health and medical communities face the AIDS pandemic at the beginning of the 21st Century, as they faced the yellow fever epidemic at the beginning of the 20th Century. Current medical research di…

Fatal myeloencephalitis following yellow fever vaccination in a case with HIV infection.

A 53 year old physically healthy man, unaware of any immunocompromised condition developed rapidly fatal myelomeningoencephalitis following a live-attenuated yellow fever vaccination. He was found to have asymptomatic HIV infection with high viral loads and low CD4 counts. This is the first reported case of such an incidence in the world literature. It is strongly suggested that in countries where HIV infection is endemic, an HIV blood test should be performed prior to the yellow fever vaccination and the vaccine should not be given to those immunocompromised persons.

[Pulmonary adiaspiromycosis: casual finding in a patient who died of yellow fever].

During an outbreak of yellow fever (rural form of the infection) occurred recently in the State of Goiás, Brazil, a patient, with clinical manifestations suggestive of the infection, died in the University Hospital of Brasilia, DF, on the fifth day from admission. Postmortem examination revealed, microscopically, the characteristic alterations of the infection, and discovered in the lungs and hilar lymph nodes round microrganisms identified as adiaconidia of Emmonsia parva var. crescens.

Automated measurement of oxygen consumption by the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti.

Oxygen consumption of single mosquitoes was measured using a differential pressure transducer (DPT) connected to two small chambers. A mosquito was placed in the experimental chamber (P1) and was separated from NaOH by 4 cm2 of marquisette mesh. The reference chamber (P2) contained the same amount of NaOH and the marquisette mesh but without a mosquito. When these two chambers were sealed, removed O2 from P1 resulted in a pressure decrease with respect to P2. This pressure differential was transduced into an output voltage that was directly proportional to the amount of O2 consumed by the mosq

Examination of the envelope glycoprotein of yellow fever vaccine viruses with monoclonal antibodies.

Two panels of envelope glycoprotein reactive monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were prepared against yellow fever (YF) 17D vaccine viruses. Five mAbs were prepared against the World Health Organization 17D-204 avian leukosis virus-free secondary seed virus and eight mAbs against 17DD vaccine manufactured in Brazil. The majority of these mAbs were type-specific and displayed differing reactions in neutralization tests. One, B14, would only neutralize YF vaccine virus grown in invertebrate cells. Others would differentiate 17D-204 and 17DD vaccines, from different manufacturers, in neutralization tes…

[Monoclonal antibodies to flavivirus antigens induced by a vaccinal strain of yellow fever].

Monoclonal antibodies (MABs) YEL-2 induced by the vaccine FNS Dakar yellow fever (YF) virus were characterized for their capacity to enter into serological reactions and to react with heterologous flaviviruses. YEL-2 MABs belong to the IgG2a class of immunoglobulins, possess the antihemagglutination properties, are active in indirect IF test but do not activate complement and have no neutralizing properties. The inability to enter into CFT in the presence of antihemagglutinating properties suggests that YEL-2 MABs are directed for the structural E glycoprotein. YEL-2 MABs reacted similarly wit…

Genetic heterogeneity of yellow fever virus strains from Africa and the Americas.

Isolates of yellow fever (YF) virus from Africa (Senegambia, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso) and from South America (Panama, Ecuador, Trinidad) were examined by oligonucleotide fingerprinting of the 40S genome RNA. Geographically isolated and epidemiologically unrelated viruses were very distinct. On the basis of the T1 oligonucleotide fingerprints of each isolate, four geographical variants (topotypes) of YF virus isolated within the same period of time have been established. The Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso topotypes were similar. In the Central African Republic, two var…

Yellow fever in the Gambia, 1978--1979: entomological aspects and epidemiological correlations.

An entomological survey was conducted in the Gambia in January 1979, during the last phase of a yellow fever (YF) outbreak which began during the previous rainy season. In the dry conditions which prevailed in January, Aedes aegypti was the only YF vector present. Two YF virus strains were isolated from females of this mosquito species caught in a village of western Gambia, where active human cases were documented. The ae. aegypti breeding sites were exclusively of the domestic type. Larval indices varied greatly from place to place, but generally appeared to correlate with the incidence of di…
