This work presents the results of study of a human skeleton from the early Middle Ages recovered in Pecławice (province of Łódź), presenting signs of extensive cranial trauma suffered perimortem. The skeleton belonged to a 20-30 year-old male of sturdy build, with prominent bone processes, marked right-side asymmetry of the bones and joints of the upper extremities, and tallness (stature well above average for early medieval times). Except for the skull, the skeleton lacks any pathologic or traumatic lesions. The right side of the skull bears signs of three extensive injuries involving the fro

INTRODUCTION: There is much evidence on associations of dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM) with malignant neoplasms. The prevalence of malignancies in patients with DM/PM is estimated at 6 to 60%. This study was undertaken to analyze the clinical and serologic picture of DM and PM coexisting with neoplastic disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 61 patients (37 with PM, 16 with DM, and 8 with the overlap syndrome - OVS). Diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, electromyography, histopathology of skin and muscle biopsies, echocardiography, and biochemical tests were done in all patients. The

Antimalarial drugs--chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine and quinacrine, initially devised for the treatment of malaria, have been used in the therapy of diverse skin diseases, including lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis, porphyria cutanea tarda, and sarcoidosis. The mechanism of action of these drugs involves stabilization of lysosomal enzymes, inhibition of antigen-presenting cells and T lymphocyte stimulation, blocking of the pro-inflammatory cytokine cascade and endosomal toll-like receptor signaling. The understanding of potential mechanisms of action of antimalarials may extend their use t

INTRODUCTION: The peripheral nervous system is usually involved in the majority of systemic connective tissue diseases, particularly in systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, vasculitis and systemic sclerosis. The pathogenesis of lesions in the peripheral nervous system associated with the autoimmune process is complex and it appears that two mechanisms, immunological and ischemic, are of greatest importance. Structures of the nervous system may be damaged by several autoantibodies (e.g. antineuronal, anti-nerve growth factor, anti-neurotrophins), by cytotoxic effects ofproinflammat

INTRODUCTION: Prediction of complications in surgery is commonly done. There are conflicting reports concerning the usefulness of risk scales (P-POSSUM, APACHE, SAPS, ASA, Goldman, etc.) in vascular surgery. We decided to take a fresh look at preoperative risk factors of early death in the context of the usefulness of some parameters which have not been included in existing risk calculators.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 1270 patients treated at the Department of Vascular Surgery, General Surgery, and Angiology, Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, during one year.

INTRODUCTION: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and psoriatic arthritis (PA) represent diseases which often demand aggressive therapy in order to control the process and inhibit lesion formation in joints and organs. This kind of therapy can be achieved with cyclosporin A (CsA), particularly when combined with methotrexate (MTX). This combination is far more effective than single-drug therapy and is capable of significantly reducing the number of articular lesions. Considering the fact that monotherapy is associated with many adverse effects, it is feared that both drugs in combination may produce cum

BACKGROUND: Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a primary systemic vasculitis with characteristic clinical manifestations from upper airways, lungs, and kidneys. Subglottic stenosis is one of the local symptoms which may occur independently or in association with involvement of other organs.
CASE REPORT: We present a patient with systemic WG positive for C-ANCA. Regression of pulmonary changes was achieved with induction therapy but the patient developed subglottic stenosis. Endotracheal dilation was partly successful, so systemic treatment had to be reintroduced to inhibit the activity of the d

Systemic necrotic and granulomatous vasculitis presents with vascular involvement in almost every organ, manifesting with stenosis, ischemia, infarction, or hemorrhage. The clinical picture depends on the kind and size of the involved vessels and on the activity of the inflammatory process. Wegener's granulomatosis is a necrotic, granulomatous inflammation of small vessels of the upper and lower airways and kidneys. We present the case of a 25-year-old male in whom the definitive diagnosis of Wegener's granulomatosis was achieved within five weeks from onset. Among the first symptoms were micr

INTRODUCTION: Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is characterized by inflammatory granulomas with necrotizing vasculitis of small and medium-sized blood vessels usually associated with the presence of circulating antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (c-ANCA). The disease predominantly affects the upper and lower airways and kidneys. Besides this classic triad of affected organs, less frequent manifestations of WG include involvement of the skin, central nervous system (CNS), and eyeballs (often with proptosis), as well as otitis with progressive hearing loss. The frequency of CNS involvement accor

Gout is a condition presenting with inflammatory arthritis caused by crystallization and phagocytosis of monosodium urate in synovial fluid. It is the most common form of arthritis in men above the age of 40 years. Four clinical stages of gout have been distinguished: asymptomatic hyperuricemia, acute gouty arthritis, intercritical gout, and chronic gout. Experimental and epidemiologic studies provide growing evidence that hyperuricemia is not only the driving force behind symptoms attributed to the deposition of monosodium urate in the musculoskeletal system but also the important etiological

Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by destructive synovitis and systemic extra-articular involvement exemplified by rheumatoid nodules occurring in the skin, lungs, and other parenchymatous organs. Antirheumatic drugs like methotrexate and leflunomide are known to predispose to the development of pulmonary rheumatoid nodules. We report the case of a 60-year-old male with rheumatoid arthritis previously treated with methotrexate and cyclosporin, in whom multiple pulmonary nodules were disclosed. The patient was extensively diagnosed to exclude any malignancy.

INTRODUCTION: Impacted maxillary canines are a serious problem in orthodontics and prosthodontics. The incidence of impaction has been reported at 3.3% of the general population and is more common among women. Impaction of canines can be unilateral or bilateral, palatal or labial. The causes of this pathology are varied. Irrespective of the cause of impaction, missing canines represent first and foremost an esthetic problem. The aim of this study was to analyze the possibilities of reconstructing missing permanent maxillary canines in a given clinical situation.

INTRODUCTION: Arterial hypertension is among the most important risk factors of atherosclerosis and associated cardiovascular pathology with a prevalence rate estimated at 20-30% of the adult population. Nowadays, it is recommended to perform an individual assessment of cardiovascular risk in a patient and to determine the threshold value for arterial hypertension, even though blood pressure classification values according to the European Society of Hypertension and the European Society of Cardiology (ESH/ESC), as well as the Polish Society of Hypertension (PTNT) have remained unchanged.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is the most prevalent acquired hemorrhagic diathesis in children characterised by antibody-mediated destruction of platelets. ITP is generally a self-limiting benign disorder but despite this good prognosis, ITP carries the risk of severe bleeding (mainly intracranial) that may threaten the child's life.
CASE REPORT: We describe a case of a 5-year-old girl with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in the course of EBV infection with massive cerebral and intraventricular hemorrhage and fatal outcome.
CONCLUSION: This extremely rare case of

Erythematotelangiectatic skin is a common cosmetic and medical problem. Flushing or persistent erythema, teleangiectasias, and occasionally other inflammatory skin lesions can be caused by internal or environmental factors. Certain physiologic reactions and systemic or dermatologic diseases represent internal conditions leading to visible skin flushing in the blush area. Erythematotelangiectatic skin is found in body areas which are particularly exposed to various environmental factors and perform important esthetic functions at the same time. Determination of the main etiopathologic factor re
