Developmental outcomes of extremely preterm infants born to adolescent mothers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Extremely preterm infants and infants born to adolescent mothers are at risk for adverse developmental. The objectives were to evaluate development and behavior outcomes of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants born to adolescent mothers <20 compared with adult mothers ≥20 years and to identify socioeconomic risk factors that affect outcomes. METHODS: Retrospective cohort analysis of 211 infants >27 weeks of adolescent mothers and 1723 infants of adult mothers at Neonatal Research Network centers from 2008 to 2011. Groups were compared and regression models were

EARLYBIRD: catching the earliest changes of the bone and intervertebral discs in children at increased risk for scoliosis development with MRI - study protocol of a prospective observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is an acquired deformity that develops in 2-4% of otherwise healthy children during adolescent growth, substantially reducing their quality of life and creating a life-long burden of disease. Despite many years of dedicated research, the cause and mechanism of AIS are still unknown and no effective curative treatments are available for children suffering from this spinal and chest deformity. To date, all etiological studies focused on children with an already established scoliosis. EARLYBIRD aims to uncover the earliest pathoanatomical change

Cortisol and testosterone jointly affect adolescent fairness.

Fairness is crucial in social interactions, shaping relationships and fostering cooperation, especially during adolescence. The developmental period, characterized by significant hormonal changes such as fluctuations in cortisol and testosterone levels, is pivotal for physiological and behavioral maturation. Despite the importance of the hormones, studies investigating their interaction effects on fairness within adolescent populations remain limited. The current study explored adolescent fairness development and how cortisol (bedtime basal cortisol and cortisol awakening response, CAR) and te

Using AI-Based Virtual Companions to Assist Adolescents with Autism in Recognizing and Addressing Cyberbullying.

Social media platforms and online gaming sites play a pervasive role in facilitating peer interaction and social development for adolescents, but they also pose potential threats to health and safety. It is crucial to tackle cyberbullying issues within these platforms to ensure the healthy social development of adolescents. Cyberbullying has been linked to adverse mental health outcomes among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, academic underperformance, and an increased risk of suicide. While cyberbullying is a concern for all adolescents, those with disabilities are particularly susc

Nurses' perceptions on and experiences in conflict situations when caring for adolescents with anorexia nervosa: A qualitative study.

Anorexia nervosa (AN), which primarily affects adolescent girls and young women, is characterized by excessive dieting, leading to severe weight loss and a pathological fear of becoming overweight, or unhealthy behaviours that hinder weight gain. Caring for patients who have AN is particularly challenging for nursing staff, who are on the front line and have the closest contact with patients. However, little is known about how nursing staff care for adolescent patients with AN in Taiwan. This study aimed to explore nurses' perceptions on and experiences in conflict situations in caring for ado

The mediating role of parenting behaviors in the relationship between early and late adolescent levels of anxiety: Specificity and informant effects.

INTRODUCTION: The role of parenting behavior is often highlighted in the development of anxiety in youth. However, previous reports are limited in terms of the specificity of relationships between different types of anxiety and parenting behaviors, informant effects on these relationships, and direction of effects. METHODS: This study investigates these questions using longitudinal data from 1350 Swedish adolescents and their parents. Adolescents' self-reports of six dimensions of anxiety and adolescents' and parents' reports of six dimensions of parenting behaviors were used in the analyses.

Clozapine-Induced Microseizures, Orofacial Dyskinesia, and Speech Dysfluency in an Adolescent with Treatment Resistant Early Onset Schizophrenia on Concurrent Lithium Therapy.

Clozapine is an atypical antipsychotic used in the treatment of refractory schizophrenia. It has a well-known side effect profile, including agranulocytosis, decreased seizure threshold, and tardive dyskinesia. In addition, numerous case reports have described clozapine-induced stuttering in adults. However, there has been only one previous case report describing it in the adolescent population. In addition, concurrent lithium therapy has been shown to enhance the neurotoxic effects of antipsychotics and lower the seizure threshold. Here, we report on the development of clozapine-induced micro

Parents' childhood experiences of bonding and parental psychopathology predict borderline personality disorder during adolescence in offspring.

Previous studies on borderline personality disorder (BPD) development suggest a transgenerational transmission of parent-child relationship quality, which may also be influenced by parents' mental health status. The aim of this study was twofold. First, we aimed to investigate the transgenerational effect of parental bonding experiences on the development of BPD in their offspring. Second, we examined the association between parents' mental health status and BPD in offspring. Ninety-one female adolescent psychiatric inpatients along with 87 mothers and 59 fathers were enrolled in the study. Ad

The drug abusing adolescent: clinical issues.

Clinical intervention with adolescent substance abusers is a complex issue. Disputes remain regarding the precise nature of the disorder. Treatment of the adolescent is complicated by the normal development tasks of this age, particularly denial of possible consequences and adoption of attendant risk-taking behaviors. Treatment begins with a complete drug history and must not neglect the adolescent's family and other support system. The mental health professional, especially the psychiatrist, can make a unique contribution in this area, despite the "bad press" he has so often received by the r

Assessing family influence on adolescent healthy eating: insights from knowledge, attitudes, and practices in a cross-sectional survey in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Poor dietary habits in adolescents contribute to the development of non-communicable diseases in adulthood. While family influence by parenting style, food parenting practice and household income on adolescent eating habits has been well-established, other family factors such as parental health conditions as well as the impact on dietary knowledge and attitudes in adolescents are underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the relative importance of family factors on adolescent healthy eating using the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) model. METHODS: A cross-sectional onl

Acceptance and commitment coaching for music performance anxiety in adolescent singers.

INTRODUCTION: Most of the anxiety disorders, particularly social anxiety, seem to develop either during childhood or adolescence. Adolescent singers who experience physical, mental and emotional changes along with voice change are particularly prone to the development of MPA. However, adolescence also seems to be an opportune time to instil healthy behaviours in singing students as they are more likely to remember these coping strategies, owing to the release of dopamine and the 'reminiscence bump'. As this period of a singer's life is wrought with inevitable anxiety development, the additiona

Correlates and Patterns of Adolescents' First Romantic Relationships in Three Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

OBJECTIVE: This study characterizes adolescent romantic relationships in three low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with varied and evolving family systems. BACKGROUND: Adolescent relationships matter for young people's future outcomes and development. These relationships vary widely, from short-term, casual relationships to more sustained and emotionally engaged relationships. They can also serve as precursors to family formation as young people approach adulthood, particularly in contexts where companionate marriage is normative and where the age at marriage and childbearing has increas

Adolescent Health Interventions: Conclusions, Evidence Gaps, and Research Priorities.

Adolescent health care is challenging compared to that of children and adults, due to their rapidly evolving physical, intellectual, and emotional development. This paper is the concluding paper for a series of reviews to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for improving adolescent health and well-being. In this paper, we summarize the evidence evaluated in the previous papers and suggest areas where there is enough existing evidence to recommend implementation and areas where further research is needed to reach consensus. Potentially effective interventions for adolescent health and w

We ex … opioid abuse by human adolescents, lower rates of reinstatement in younger rats might suggest that adolescent development includes some protective factors that dampen the long-term impact of early drug intake.

Identifying diagnostic neuroimaging biomarkers for adolescent major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: The increasing incidence of adolescent depression represents a serious public health concern. Despite clear diagnostic criteria, the wide range of symptoms and their overlap with other psychiatric disorders make it difficult to provide effective personalized treatment in adolescents. The integration of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and machine learning has shown promise in identifying diagnostic biomarkers and shedding light on personalized treatments in adult depression. However, equivalent studies in adolescent depression are lacking. Therefore, th

Adolescent adversity persistently induces proinflammatory HMGB1 signaling and disrupts the basal forebrain cholinergic system in female rats.

Adolescence is a critical period of neurodevelopment characterized by heightened neuroplasticity and refinement of executive functioning and cognition. Basal forebrain cholinergic neurons mature during this period, coinciding with development of adult cognitive function. Exposure to adolescent adversity has been linked to long-lasting neurobiological and cognitive consequences, yet the mechanisms underlying these outcomes remain poorly understood. Using a preclinical model of adolescent intermittent restraint stress (AIRS), we tested the hypothesis that adolescent adversity induces lasting pro

Public policy on the prevention of subsequent adolescent pregnancy: what type of policy prevails?

This study aims to conduct a search of public-policy instruments seeking explicit references to subsequent adolescent pregnancy, as well as to discern what kinds of actions have been proposed as part of the international and national agendas to facilitate subsequent adolescent pregnancy prevention and care. During June 2021, we used an integrative review to search and to analyze national and international public policy instruments along with other documents related to subsequent adolescent pregnancy. We observed, for each, the presence of statements on subsequent adolescent pregnancy. The rese

The protective effect of neighbourhood social cohesion on adolescent mental health following stressful life events.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to stressful life events is an established risk factor for the development of adolescent mental disorder. Growing evidence also suggests that neighbourhood social environments, including strong social cohesion, could have a protective effect on mental health. However, little is known about how neighbourhood social cohesion may buffer against the effects of stressful life events on adolescent mental health. Our aim was to assess whether neighbourhood social cohesion modifies the association between stressful life events and adolescent mental health outcomes. METHODS: Data
