An attempt was made to identify some of the major variables, such as age, sex, ethnicity, and diagnosis, that might be determinants of compliance with psychiatrists' recommendations to enter outpatient treatment after emergency room visits. In general, it was found that older Puerto Rican and white women, usually those diagnosed as having some kind of depression, had the highest rate of compliance. Black patients, as well as all patients diagnosed as schizophrenic, had the lowest probability of outpatient follow-up. A telephone survey of those patients who did not go for outpatient treatment w

Little is known about how patients with long-term eating disorders manage their clinical problems. We carried out a preliminary qualitative study (using Thematic Analysis) of patients with severe and enduring anorexia nervosa (SEED-AN) in which we undertook recorded interviews in eight participants whose conditions had lasted 20-40 years. We found 15 principle features in physical, psychological, social, family, occupational and treatment realms. Psychological and social realms were most affected. Severe physical problems were reported. They described feelings of unworthiness, frugality regard

BACKGROUND: Information on patterns and correlates of the violent behaviour of individuals with schizophrenia is largely limited to populations in developed countries. Data from a World Health Organization epidemiological study of schizophrenia and related disorders, the Determinants of Outcome of Severe Mental Disorders (DOSMD), presented an opportunity to study patterns of violence across multinational settings.
METHOD: Centres in 10 countries participated in the DOSMD study. An incidence sample of 1017 patients with schizophrenia who had their first-in-lifetime contact with a helping agenc

Across subthreshold psychotic and nonpsychotic syndromes, symptoms experienced before the onset of a first episode of psychosis (FEP) may index distinct illness trajectories. We aimed to examine the associations between three types of pre-onset symptoms (self-harm, suicide attempts, and subthreshold psychotic) and outcome trajectories during FEP. Participants with FEP were recruited from PEPP-Montreal, a catchment-based early intervention service. Pre-onset symptoms were systematically assessed through interviews with participants (and their relatives) and reviews of health and social records.

Environmental as well as individual socio-demographic and illness characteristics are related to the risk of admission. This paper addresses the problem of the interrelationships of these factors to admission rates. Using the Groningen Psychiatric Case Register, admission rates (during 1986 and 1987) from 34 administrative areas were calculated. Logit models were fitted in order to test the relationship between the relative risk of being admitted and sex, age, marital status, diagnosis, urbanization and distance from facilities. The effect of urbanization remains under the control of the other

The authors used a questionnaire technique to determine the magnitude of the problem of emotional illness and poor performance during psychiatric residency, the procedures that are used to screen for or help disturbed residents, and characteristics that differentiate residents who are at risk. The data indicated that residents who have problems that lead to termination are rarely free of emotional disturbance. The general belief that women, foreign medical graduates, and minority group members are at higher risk for problems during residency was not supported; however, younger residents and tr

Twenty percent of a cohort of 206 outpatient depressives with no past bipolar history switched during prospective observation. These 41 probands developed manic periods on the average of 6.4 years (median 4, range 1-25) after their first depressive episode. The change in polarity occurred throughout the life span, but was most common in adolescence and early adulthood. The following variables were found useful in predicting this outcome: onset less than or equal to 25 years, bipolar family history, loaded pedigrees, precipitation by childbirth, hypersomnic-retarded phenomenology, and pharmacol

BACKGROUND: Psychotic disorders affect up to 3% of the population and are often chronic and disabling. Innovation in the pharmacological treatment of psychosis has remained stagnant in recent decades. In order to improve outcomes for those with psychotic disorders, we present a protocol for the trial of a common food preservative, sodium benzoate, as an adjunctive treatment in early psychosis.
METHODS: Persons experiencing early psychosis (n = 160) will be recruited through hospitals and community mental health services in Queensland, Australia. Patients will be randomized to receive either 1

Schizophrenia is a common and debilitating illness, characterized by chronic psychotic symptoms and psychosocial impairment that exact considerable human and economic costs. The literature in electronic databases as well as citations and major articles are reviewed with respect to the phenomenology, pathology, treatment, genetics and neurobiology of schizophrenia. Although studied extensively from a clinical, psychological, biological and genetic perspective, our expanding knowledge of schizophrenia provides only an incomplete understanding of this complex disorder. Recent advances in neurosci

Schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are distinct neurodegenerative disorders characterized by progressive cognitive deficits and structural alterations in the brain. Schizophrenia typically emerges in adolescence or early adulthood with symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and cognitive impairments, whereas AD primarily affects elderly individuals, causing progressive memory loss, cognitive decline, and behavioral changes. Delusional disorder, which often emerges later in life, shares some features with schizophrenia and is considered a schizophrenia spectrum disorder. Patients w

In light of current linkage studies in schizophrenia, research on the "schizophrenia spectrum" deserves increased attention for an exact determination of the affected phenotype: Those disorders that have a much higher prevalence among biological relatives of schizophrenia patients are supposed to share common etiological factors with "core" schizophrenia. However, there is controversy over which of the DSM-III-R personality disorders should be included in the spectrum. In a controlled family study of inpatients with a DSM-III-R diagnosis of schizophrenia (n = 101), schizophreniform and schizoa

This study aimed to explore the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and lockdown period measures on patients' visits to the psychiatric emergency department (PED) of a University Hospital in İstanbul. We compared the number and characteristics of patients during the initial lockdown with visits in the pre- and post-lockdown months. We also investigated the number of monthly PED visits and hospitalizations between March 11, 2020 and 2021 and compared it to the same period in 2019 and between March 2021 and 2022. PED visits in the initial lockdown period in our university increased b

Child maltreatment (CM) worsens prognosis and quality of life in several psychiatric conditions. Meaning in life is a construct which relates to the sense of purpose that one can perceive in life, and is a key aspect of recovery in psychiatric patients. The lasting impact of CM on meaning in life and its mediating variables have not been studied in patients with chronic persistent psychiatric conditions. One hundred and sixty-six patients with bipolar disorder (N=35), psychotic disorder (N=73), anorexia nervosa (N=30) or borderline personality disorder (N=28) were assessed for meaning in life

INTRODUCTION: Periodic movements of the limbs (PML) whilst sleeping is a disorder included in the group of intrinsic dysomnias which cause problems of insomnia and somnolence during the day. It is usually associated with the restless legs syndrome (it occurs in 80% of the patients with this syndrome) although PML may occasionally be an isolated finding. The prevalence of the disease is of 11%. It usually occurs in patients aged over 50 years, and the frequency increase with age. It is uncommon in persons aged under 30 years. In children it is almost unknown. When it does occur in this age grou

Parameters of innate and adaptive immunity were studied in the blood serum of 180 patients, aged 15-25 years, with different endogenous mental diseases with depressive and mania disorders in the clinical picture (affective psychoses (29 patients), schizoaffective psychoses (106 patients) , slow-progressive schizophrenia (23 patients) and intermittent-progressive schizophrenia (22 patients)). The activation of innate immunity (the increase in the degranulation activity of leukocyte elastase (LE) and functional activity of alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor (α1-PI) were found in all the diseases. BACKGROUND: A history of childhood trauma is reportedly more prevalent in people suffering from psychosis than in the general population. Childhood trauma has also been linked to cognitive abnormalities in adulthood, and cognitive abnormalities, in turn, are one of the key clinical features of psychosis. Therefore, this study investigated whether there was a relationship between childhood trauma and cognitive function in patients with first-episode psychosis. The potential impact of diagnosis (schizophrenia or affective psychosis) and gender on this association was also examined.
METHODS: Dat

INTRODUCTION: Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a neural response to unexpected deviations from a regular sequence of stimuli. A diminished MMN is highly replicated in schizophrenia; however, whether this is observed in bipolar disorder (BD) is less clear.
AIM: To conduct a meta-analysis of MMN alterations in people with BD compared to healthy controls.
METHODS: Electronic databases were searched until 20/10/2025, for between-subjects studies examining MMN amplitudes and or latencies in BD patients compared with controls. 15 studies consisting of 437 BD patients and 815 controls were included in

Objective. Despite evidence from case series, the comorbidity of eating disorders (EDs) with schizophrenia is poorly understood. This review aimed to assess the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of EDs in schizophrenia patients and to examine whether the management of EDs can be improved. Methods. A qualitative review of the published literature was performed using the following terms: "schizophrenia" in association with "eating disorders," "anorexia nervosa," "bulimia nervosa," "binge eating disorder," or "night eating syndrome." Results. According to our literature review, there i

There has been little attention given to whether parietal lobe structural deficits are present in patients with schizophrenia and related personality disorders. The current study was designed to examine parietal volume alterations between schizophrenia and schizotypal personality disorder. Twenty-five patients with schizotypal disorder, 53 patients with schizophrenia, and 59 healthy volunteers were scanned using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Volume measurements of the postcentral gyrus (PoCG), precuneus, superior parietal gyrus (SuPG), supramarginal gyrus (SMG), and angular

Common variants of the FK506 binding protein 5 (FKBP5) gene are implicated in psychotic and other disorders, via their role in regulating glucocorticoid receptor (GR) receptor sensitivity and effects on the broader function of the HPA system in response to stress. In this study, the effects of four FKBP5 polymorphisms (rs1360780, rs9470080, rs4713902, rs9394309) on IQ and eight other cognitive domains were examined in the context of exposure to childhood maltreatment in 444 cases with schizophrenia and 292 healthy controls (from a total sample of 617 cases and 659 controls obtained from the Au
