Anatomical identification of a telencephalic somatosensory area in a reptile, Caiman crocodilus.

Telencephalic projections of a thalamic somatosensory area were investigated in a reptilian species, Caiman crocodilus, by means of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) neurohistochemistry. Injections of HRP into the medialis complex labeled axons that leave the ventral aspect of this nucleus to enter the dorsal peduncle of the lateral forebrain bundle where they ascend. These fibers course rostrally to enter the central portion of the lateral forebrain bundle. Here, axons turn dorsally, pass through, and probably synapse on, interposed neurons of the ventrolateral area, to end in a central portion of

Tactile-evoked response of sensory fibers in buccal and submandibular regions of the rat.

Evoked neural responses to tactile stimulation were recorded electrophysiologically from the mechanoreceptive afferent fibers innervating the buccal and submandibular regions of Wistar rats anesthetized with sodium thiopental. Miniature probes 200 microns in diameter were used, and data analysis was performed on the mechanosensitivity of responses to tactile stimulation in the areas innervated by the mental, mylohyoid, auriculotemporal, and cervical nerves. Mechano-sensitivity of each area showed a characteristic distribution of slowly adapting (SA), rapidly adapting (RA), C-fiber (CF), and ha

Selective deafferentation of convergent inputs to trigeminal subnucleus caudalis: effects on calcitonin gene-related peptide distribution.

Electrophysiological studies (Sessle, 1987, 1991) suggest that trigeminal deafferenting injuries can cause an "unmasking" of existing but normally suppressed convergent inputs to the spinal trigeminal nucleus, including many that arise from the cervical spinal cord. However, the spatial arrangement of this projection has not been examined, particularly with reference to nociceptive components that might become involved in pathological changes leading to chronic pain. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to apply selective interruptions of the trigeminal and/or cervical primary afferent inp

Cholinergic innervation of the cerebellum of the rat by secondary vestibular afferents.

The cholinergic innervation of the cerebellar cortex of the rat was studied by immunohistochemical localization of choline acetyltransferase, radiochemical measurement of ChAT activity, and double labeling of ChAT-positive neurons with HRP injected into the cerebellum. ChAT immunohistochemistry revealed large mossy fiber rosettes as well as finely beaded terminals with different morphological characterization, laminar distribution within the cerebellar cortex, and regional differences within the cerebellum. Large "grapelike" ChAT-positive mossy fiber rosettes that were distributed primarily in

Argiotoxin-636 blocks effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate on lateral line of Xenopus laevis at concentrations which do not alter spontaneous or evoked neural activity.

Activity of primary afferent neurons in acousticolateralis organs can be modulated by excitatory amino acids (EAA) and their antagonists, and EAA are among the better candidates for the transmitter(s) between hair cells and afferent neurons. Argiotoxin-636 (ATX) is a spider venom toxin that is a selective antagonist of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) subtype of excitatory amino acid receptors in vertebrates. In the present study, the effects of NMDA alone and in combination with ATX on resting firing rate (spontaneous activity) and mechanically stimulated activity of lateral line afferent neur

Auditory brainstem of the ferret: early cessation of developmental sensitivity of neurons in the cochlear nucleus to removal of the cochlea.

The role of primary afferent innervation in the maintenance of neurons in the mammalian auditory system was assessed by performing unilateral removals of the cochlea in neonatal and mature ferrets of known birth dates. Removals were performed under steroid anesthesia and resulted in the complete destruction of the organ of Corti and the loss of at least 80% of type I spiral ganglion neurons. Four main age groups [postnatal days (P)5, P24, P90, and P180] were used. Additional animals received no surgery, partial removals, or complete removals at older ages. Three months after the cochlear remov

Spontaneously hypertensive rats exhibit reduced hypothalamic noradrenergic input after NaCl loading.

Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) of the Okamoto strain exhibit a significant exacerbation in severity of hypertension when fed diets high in NaCl. To examine the hypothesis that abnormalities in the monoaminergic innervation of the hypothalamus and brainstem contribute to the NaCl-induced exacerbation of hypertension, the monoamine and monoamine metabolite contents of specific hypothalamic and brainstem regions thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension were determined in SHR fed a diet containing 8% or 1% NaCl for either 2 or 6 weeks beginning at age 8 weeks. SHR maintain

Evidence for direct reciprocal interactions between the central rhythm generators for spinal "respiratory" and locomotor activities in the rabbit.

Rhythm generators for locomotion and respiration have been previously identified in the high spinal rabbit treated with nialamide and DOPA. In curarized preparations, with no sensory feedback, simultaneous recordings of motor commands from the nerves to the diaphragm and to several hindlimb nerves have demonstrated that central (intraspinal) interactions exist between these respiratory and locomotor activities. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the nature of these interactions. Two main possibilities existed: "direct" interactions taking place between the rhythm generators; t

[Receptive relaxation of the canine stomach].

Receptive relaxation of the stomach by feeding was studied in 5 conscious dogs by means of chronically implanted force transducers on the gastric body and antrum. It was found that only the gastric body but not antrum relaxed by feeding, and magnitude of the relaxation of the gastric body was linearly related to the volume (5, 10 and 20 g/kg) of test meals, given once or in multiple times. Secondly, in the study of pharmacological blockers, it was found that atropine, hexamethonium and phentolamine significantly inhibited relaxation, while naloxone and proglumide significantly suppressed relax

On the spinal pathways mediating scalp-SEPs to upper and lower limb nerve stimulation: case report and discussion.

Scalp-SEPs to peroneal nerve stimulation were abnormal in a patient with an intradural meningeoma which was compressing the antero-lateral quadrant of the 1st and, partly, the 2nd cervical myelomers. In contrast, spine and scalp-SEPs were symmetrically normal during the sural, median and ulnar nerve stimulation of either side. On surgery, it was observed that the tumor had left the dorsal columns (DCs) almost unaffected. It is argued, in agreement with the bulk of experimental evidence, that in humans the scalp-SEPs to lower mixed nerve stimulation are also mediated, at the rostral cord level,

Acrylamide-induced ascending degeneration of ligated peripheral nerve: effect of ligature location.

Acrylamide was administered to rats for 10 days (50 mg/kg/day) after ligation of either proximal (sciatic) or distal (posterior tibial) nerves. Morphologic evaluation of the nerves revealed severe degeneration 0.5 cm proximal to the ligature, with progressively less pronounced change at successively higher levels above the ligature, when compared with ligated non-treated controls. Although severe degeneration of the nerves was observed in both proximal- and distal-ligated groups of animals, the distal-ligated group showed slightly more change (at 0.5 cm above the ligature), suggesting a minor

Trigeminal projections to supratentorial pial and dural blood vessels in cats demonstrated by horseradish peroxidase histochemistry.

Anatomical and clinical observations suggest that supratentorial vascular structures contain afferent projections from the trigeminal ganglia. To characterize this innervation, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and HRP conjugated to wheat germ agglutinin were applied to the pial and dural arteries and sinuses of 33 cats. HRP was restricted to the site of interest by applying it dissolved in a viscous polymer, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), to achieve slow release and minimize diffusion. The ganglia of cranial nerves V, VII, IX, and X and the superior cervical ganglia (SCGs) were examined bilaterally for

Effect on arterial pressure of rhythmically contracting the hindlimb muscles of cats.

Although static contraction of the hindlimb muscles of anesthetized cats is known to reflexly increase arterial pressure and heart rate, the cardiovascular effects of rhythmic contractions of these muscles is unclear. To help clarify this issue, we determined, in chloralose-anesthetized cats, the effects on arterial pressure and heart rate of rhythmically contracting the hindlimb muscles at a frequency of 5 Hz. In addition, we determined the effect of rhythmic contractions on the impulse activity of group III and IV muscle afferents whose activation is known to increase cardiovascular function

Neuromuscular diseases as models of cardiovascular regulation during exercise.

This article reviews the research performed to date on the cardiovascular responses to exercise in patients with neuromuscular diseases and lesions affecting the transmission of afferent impulses from skeletal muscle. These studies have provided important information about the roles of central command and reflexes from skeletal muscle afferents in circulatory control. Few animal models of neuromuscular diseases are available. Studies of patients with specific defects in skeletal muscle energy metabolism are particularly valuable because the local metabolic state participates in both systemic a

Renal nerves in the pathogenesis of hypertension in experimental animals and humans.

Efferent renal innervation is composed of postganglionic sympathetic fibers to the renal arterioles, juxtaglomerular apparatus, and renal tubules. Increased efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity results in increased renal vascular resistance, renin release, and sodium retention. These responses from enhanced renal sympathetic activity contribute to normal cardiovascular homeostasis but could also facilitate the development of hypertension by shifting the arterial pressure-renal sodium excretion curve to the right. Accordingly, interruption of the renal nerves should prevent the development

The visual claustrum of the cat. I. Structure and connections.

The cat's dorsocaudal claustrum was studied in Golgi preparations, by electron microscopy, and by anterograde and retrograde tracer techniques. It receives a convergent retinotopic projection from several visual cortical ares, including areas 17, 18, 19, 21a and PMLS (posteromedial lateral suprasylvian area). The projection arises from spiny dendrite cells (pyramidal and fusiform) in the middle of cortical layer VI. As shown by a double label experiment, they form a separate population from those projecting to the lateral geniculate nucleus. There are also inputs from the lateral hypothalamus,

Spinal, trigeminal, and cortical climbing fibre paths to the lateral vermis of the cerebellar anterior lobe in the cat.

The spinal, trigeminal and cortical climbing fibre projection to the lateral vermis of the cerebellar anterior lobe in the cat has been investigated. The b zone, which occupies a one mm wide band in the lateral vermis, receives a somatotopically arranged input. Successively more rostral segments (tail, hindlimb, thorax, forelimb and trigeminal nerves) project to successively more medial microzones. The b zone receives an input through each of three spino-olivocerebellar paths (SOCPs) ascending in the ventral, dorsal and dorsolateral funiculi (VF, DF and DLF). In the b zone, the hindlimb input
