BACKGROUND: There is limited information on UK anaesthetists' perspectives and experiences of perioperative anaphylaxis. This baseline survey of the Sixth National Audit Project (NAP6) aimed to identify relevant departmental preparedness and practices, and individual experiences, perceptions and drug-avoidance patterns.
METHODS: All anaesthetists in 356 UK NHS hospitals were invited to complete an electronic survey.

Universal screening for maternal group B Streptococcus (GBS) in the prenatal period has led to administration of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP). Although IAP decreased the rate of early neonatal GBS disease, exposure of childbearing women to penicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics has increased. Beta-lactam-induced anaphylaxis in the breastfeeding woman during the postpartum period illustrates risk factors for beta-lactam allergy and anaphylaxis. Treatment and nursing implications for this adverse reaction are suggested.

We reported 11 cases of patients who developed moderate to severe anaphylactic reactions induced by the ingestion of grand keyhole limpet (GKL) and abalone. Specific IgE-mediated hypersensitivity to these shellfish was demonstrated by history, skin prick test, RAST and immunoblotting. The RAST inhibition technique revealed cross antigenicity between GKL, abalone and keyhole limpet hemocyanin. By immunoblotting analysis, the major antigens of GKL are shown in the MW range of about 38 Kd and 80 Kd.
