Ecotoxicity of four prevalent antibiotics to saltwater species and their ecological risks in global estuaries.

Estuaries, where upstream freshwater tributaries converge with marine systems, serve as accumulation hotspots for anthropogenic pollutants. With rising antibiotic usage, concerns over their hazardous impacts in estuaries are growing. Risk reduction and management strategies for pollutants rely on water quality benchmarks. However, saltwater benchmarks for antibiotics are lacking due to insufficient saltwater ecotoxicity data for constructing species sensitivity distribution (SSD) models. This study evaluated the ecotoxicity of four prevalent antibiotics (tetracycline, oxytetracycline, trimetho

Crinoid biology and ecology.

Crinoids (Class Crinoidea) are the oldest extant echinoderm lineage and possess one of the most complete fossil records of any marine animal group, spanning almost half a billion years. Although they dominated many Paleozoic benthic ecosystems, only approximately 731 species survive today, occupying habitats from shallow reefs to the deepest ocean trenches. This chapter provides a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge on crinoid biology and ecology, integrating evidence from modern and fossil taxa to examine the evolutionary processes that have shaped their remarkable persistence and di

Drivers of Viral Diversity and Sharing in Marine Mammals.

Knowledge of viral infection in marine mammals, a group severely threatened by human activity, is largely limited to the pathology and epidemiology of few endemic viruses. The recent emergence in marine mammals of high-consequence viruses, such as H5N1 avian influenza and rabies, underscores the importance of understanding the ecology of viral transmission in these species. Metatranscriptomic approaches now enable relatively unbiased characterisation of full viral communities that can reveal ecological and evolutionary drivers of infection. We sequenced RNA from 15 marine mammal species (42 po

Resilience of soil fauna to pesticide contamination in areas impacted by mining tailings.

We aimed to assess the intrinsic toxicity of iron mining tailings-impacted soil and the recovery capacity of invertebrates when exposed to pesticides. The study was developed in two phases, and the soil used was collected in areas impacted by the Fundão dam rupture. In the first phase, the intrinsic toxicity was investigated by exposing Folsomia candida, Enchytraeus crypticus, and Eisenia andrei to tailings-impacted and no-impacted soils (reference). In the second phase, chronic tests involved using F. candida and E. crypticus, exposed to imidacloprid. Exposure concentrations were 0, 0.25, 0.5

The Sharklogger Network-monitoring Cayman Islands shark populations through an innovative citizen science program.

The use of citizen science can be a cost-effective tool in conservation science but mostly relies on the collation of incidental sighting reports. This study describes the design, operation, and findings of a novel, closely-guided citizen science program (the 'Sharklogger Network') in the Cayman Islands. Participants from the recreational SCUBA diving community used a standardized, effort-based protocol to monitor local coastal shark populations. Over two years (2017-2018) a total of 69 participants conducted 24,442 dives across 472 dives sites and recorded 4,666 shark sightings from eight sha

Noble-Metal-Free Cu(I)-Catalyzed sp and sp2 C-H Carboxylation to Produce High-Value Compounds via CO2 Fixation under Atmospheric Conditions.

The rise in anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has significantly accelerated global environmental degradation, necessitating controlled measures to achieve carbon neutrality by utilizing CO2 as a C1 feedstock for the preparation of important commodity products and fuels. Herein, we demonstrate the rational design and preparation of a precious metal-free catalyst (Cu(I)@Zr-MOF) by anchoring Cu(I) ions to functionalized Zr-MOF. Notably, Cu(I)@Zr-MOF exhibited high selectivity for CO2 uptake with a surface area of 1083 m2/g. The high concentration of catalytically active Cu(I) sites pre

Structural and functional responses of microbial communities in coastal sediments towards anthropogenic pollution caused by ship breaking activities.

Coastal ecosystems, like many others on the planet, face chronic threats from anthropogenic activities. The Alang-Sosiya Ship Breaking Yard (ASSBY) located near Bhavnagar in Gujarat, India, represents one such ecosystem impacted by decades of ship-breaking activities. This study aimed to assess the differences in microbial community composition between polluted coastal samples and pristine samples through high-throughput sequencing. Additionally, microbial co-occurrence networks and genes related to antibiotic and heavy metal resistance were predicted using metagenome mining. The analysis conf

Development and validation of the UHPLC-MS/MS method for the quantitative determination of 25 PFAS in dried blood spots.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are anthropogenic fluorine-containing compounds largely used in industrial and consumer applications. They tend to bioaccumulate in the human body after intake from various sources in daily life. Following repeated exposure to PFAS, a broad range of adverse health outcomes has been reported. Consequently, monitoring PFAS levels in human blood is of paramount importance for public health policies. In contrast with traditional venipuncture, dried blood spots (DBS) constitute a reliable, cheap, and less invasive technique to allow microsampling by capill

Nitrogen oxides emissions from coastal wetland sediments: Experimental assessment of the influence of vegetation and nitrogen input.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) have essential impacts on global climate and the environment, making it essential to study the contribution of wetland-generated NOx to environmental problems. With exogenous nitrogen input from anthropogenic activities, wetland sediments become active emission hotspots for NOx. In this study, we conducted field experiments in a typical salt marsh wetland to measure nitric oxide (NO, the primary component of NOx from sediments) exchange fluxes in both mudflat and vegetated sediments. We found that NO fluxes in vegetated sediments (0.40 ± 0.15 × 10-12 kg N m-2 s

Hand-crafted potent hydroxyl-rich husk succoured Fe3O4 @ Cu, Mn, Ni, Co - tetra-metallic heterogenous nanocomposite as a catalytic accelerant.

An innovative means of synthesizing mechanically recoverable ternary nanocomposite (NC) comprising Fe3O4 supported on Oryza sativa husk (OSH) and ornamented with 3d tetra-metals (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu) is proposed using a manual grinding method. This NC was prepared via a one-step manual method. The added advantage of this method is the non-usage of solvents during the synthesis of the NC. In situ, the NPs were grown on OSH-supported magnetite NPs, where they combined to form a matrix to facilitate the formation of the metal NPs in it. The as-crafted Oryza sativa husk-supported magnetite @ tetra-

Bioaerosols and VOC emissions from landfill leachate treatment processes: Regional differences and health risks.

The landfill leachate treatment process (LLTP) is a crucial anthropogenic source of bioaerosols and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with potential environmental impacts and on-site health risks to plant workers. However, factors influencing microbial aerosol and VOC emissions remain poorly understood. We sampled and analyzed bioaerosols and VOCs in two process sections (oxidation ditch [OD] and reverse osmosis membrane [RO]) of LLTPs in northern (NLF) and southern (SLF) China. Bioaerosol concentrations were highest in OD, and particle size predominantly ranged from 0.654.7 µm. Microbial comm

Characteristics and sources of PM2.5-bound elements in Shanghai during autumn and winter of 2019: Insight into the development of pollution episodes.

Elemental composition of PM2.5 dispersed in the atmosphere has received increasing attention due to its health effect and catalytic activities. In this study, the characteristics and source apportionment of PM2.5-bound elements were investigated using hourly measurements. K is the most abundant metal element, followed by Fe > Ca > Zn > Mn > Ba > Pb > Cu > Cd. With an average of 8.8 ± 4.1 ng m-3, Cd was the only element whose pollution level exceeded the limits of Chinese standards and WHO guidelines. The concentrations of As, Se, and Pb doubled in December compared to November, indicating a la

Environmental concentrations of antibiotics, biocides, and heavy metals fail to induce phenotypic antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli.

Most anthropogenically affected environments contain mixtures of pollutants from different sources. The impact of these pollutants is usually the combined effect of the individual polluting constituents. However, how these stressors contribute to the development of antimicrobial resistance in environmental microorganisms is poorly understood. Thus, a 30-day exposure experiment to environmental and sub-inhibitory concentrations of oxytetracycline, amoxicillin, zinc, copper, BAC (benzalkonium chloride) 10 and DADMAC (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) 12, was conducted using fully susceptible E.

Bioactive Molecules Derived from Plants in Managing Dengue Vector Aedes aegypti (Linn.).

Mosquitoes are the potential vectors of several viral diseases such as filariasis, malaria, dengue, yellow fever, Zika fever and encephalitis in humans as well as other species. Dengue, the most common mosquito-borne disease in humans caused by the dengue virus is transmitted by the vector Ae. aegypti. Fever, chills, nausea and neurological disorders are the frequent symptoms of Zika and dengue. Thanks to various anthropogenic activities such as deforestation, industrialized farming and poor drainage facilities there has been a significant rise in mosquitoes and vector-borne diseases. Control

Ambient acidic ultrafine particles in different land-use areas in two representative Chinese cities.

The adverse effects of acidic ultrafine particles (AUFPs) have been widely recognized in scientific communities. However, a handful of studies successfully acquired the concentrations of AUFPs in the atmosphere. To explore the AUFPs pollution, six extensive measurements were for the first time conducted in the roadside, urban and rural areas in Hong Kong, and the urban area in Shanghai between 2017 and 2020. The concentrations of AUFPs and UFPs, and the proportions of AUFPs in UFPs were obtained. The concentration of UFPs was the highest at the roadside site, followed by the urban site and the

Fine-scale estimation of effective reproduction numbers for dengue surveillance.

The effective reproduction number Rt is an epidemiological quantity that provides an instantaneous measure of transmission potential of an infectious disease. While dengue is an increasingly important vector-borne disease, few have used Rt as a measure to inform public health operations and policy for dengue. This study demonstrates the utility of Rt for real time dengue surveillance. Using nationally representative, geo-located dengue case data from Singapore over 2010-2020, we estimated Rt by modifying methods from Bayesian (EpiEstim) and filtering (EpiFilter) approaches, at both the nationa

Hexavalent chromium promotes differential binding of CTCF to its cognate sites in Euchromatin.

Hexavalent chromium compounds are well-established respiratory carcinogens to which humans are commonly exposed in industrial and occupational settings. In addition, natural and anthropogenic sources of these compounds contribute to the exposure of global populations through multiple routes, including dermal, ingestion and inhalation that elevate the risk of cancer by largely unresolved mechanisms. Cr(VI) has genotoxic properties that include ternary adduct formation with DNA, increases in DNA damage, mostly by double-strand break formation, and altered transcriptional responses. Our previous
