OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the cerebral perfusion features in patients with Takayasu arteritis (TA) involving the brain blood supply arteries with pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance (pCASL) imaging.
METHODS: pCASL-MRI was utilized to measure the cerebral perfusion in the whole brain and various brain regions of healthy individuals and TA patients. The differences in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and arterial transit time (ATT) were compared between TA patients and healthy controls, as well as within TA patients based on the history of cerebral infarction, …

BACKGROUND: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a vasculitis of large and medium-sized vessels that causes severe ophthalmic complications. Timely diagnosis and disease monitoring may prevent permanent vision loss but biomarkers for early ocular involvement are scarce. This study evaluates early optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) biomarkers of ocular involvement in newly diagnosed GCA.
METHODS: Newly diagnosed GCA patients and similarly aged controls were enrolled. Participants underwent ocular examination, including OCT and OCTA imaging of the macula and optic disc. OCT …

BACKGROUND Arterial hypertension in pediatric patients often presents complex diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. The diagnosis of hypertension in children is based on different guidelines than in adults, with arterial hypertension in children defined as systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure values at or above the 95th percentile for age, sex, and height. Unlike adult populations, it is predominantly secondary in etiology, with conditions such as renovascular hypertension as common causes. Fibromuscular dysplasia and Takayasu arteritis are frequent underlying causes of renal artery steno…

Giant cell arteritis (GCA), more common in Northern European populations, has limited data in Arabcountries. Our study reports GCA's clinical manifestations in Jordan and reviews published research on GCA across Arab nations. In this retrospective analysis, GCA patients diagnosed from January 2007 to March 2019 at a Jordanian academic medical center were included through referrals for temporal artery biopsy (TAB). A comprehensive search in PubMed, Scopus, and the DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) databases was conducted to identify all relevant English-language manuscripts from Arab cou…

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related diseases are systemic fibroinflammatory disease characterized by extensive infiltration of IgG4-positive plasma cells in the affected tissue(s), with high plasma levels of IgG4. However, coronary involvement is rare.
CASE SUMMARY: A 70-year-old man was diagnosed with IgG4-related coronary arteritis, pancreatitis, and cholangitis during full-body contrast computed tomography (CT) examination prior to surgery for an iliac artery aneurysm. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/CT showed increased uptake of 18F-FDG in the pancre…

Takayasu arteritis is a rare vasculitis commonly seen in young women. Amaurosis fugax and headache are visual presentations of Takayasu arteritis. Migraine with visual aura is a common condition affecting young women, and differentiating migraine from Takayasu presenting with visual symptoms and headache can be challenging. We present a case of a young woman initially misdiagnosed with migraine with aura, who was later found to have amaurosis fugax as an early manifestation of Takayasu arteritis.

Acute rheumatic fever and Takayasu arteritis are examples of autoimmune diseases that commonly affect the cardiovascular system. We report an infrequent co-occurrence of both these diseases in an adolescent male. It may appear that in some individuals, the rheumatic fever may act as a trigger for the development of large vessel vasculitis. This possibility should be considered in patients on follow-up if they develop fresh features of cardiovascular compromise despite appropriate medical, interventional, or surgical therapy for rheumatic heart disease.

Takayasu arteritis is a vasculitis affecting women of reproductive age. Appropriate care of these patients requires a multidisciplinary approach and close monitoring. We present the case of a woman with a triplet gestation and Takayasu arteritis complicated by an ascending aortic aneurysm, aortic regurgitation, and bicuspid aortic valve.

We present a case in which cerebral infarction was seen and Behcet's syndrome was diagnosed. Following investigation and monitoring, we identified that the cause was a progressive obliterative focal arteritis of the middle cerebral artery. Such an entity has not previously been reported, although similar cases are described which explain the pathophysiology of the disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Blindness is a feared complication of giant cell arteritis (GCA). However, the spectrum of pathologic orbital imaging findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in GCA is not well understood. In this study, we assess inflammatory changes of intraorbital structures on black blood MRI (BB-MRI) in patients with GCA compared to age-matched controls.
METHODS: In this multicenter case-control study, 106 subjects underwent BB-MRI. Fifty-six patients with clinically or histologically diagnosed GCA and 50 age-matched controls without clinical or laboratory evidence of vasculitis were incl…

A twelve-year-old girl with classical features of Takayasu arteritis presented with scalp ulceration and osteomyelitis. Her computed tomography (CT) of the head revealed an extensive ulcerated lesion over the left high parietal region with lytic destruction of the outer and inner tables of the skull. Because of full-thickness calvarial bone involvement, chronic osteomyelitis, and ulcerated scalp lesion, she underwent debridement of involved bone along with the margin of normal skin. During surgery, underlying dura was found to be not involved, and a transposition flap was done for reconstructi…

Giant cell arteritis (GCA), previously referred to as temporal arteritis, continues to pose significant diagnostic challenges to clinicians as it could have unusual and atypical presentations. We present the case of a 69-year-old Caucasian male who had presented with painful scrotal swelling and bilateral arm pain and was eventually diagnosed with GCA based on histological findings. His symptoms resolved completely with the initiation of high-dose steroids. It is important to note that some clinical manifestations of GCA could be subtle, atypical, and maybe entirely extracranial. A high index …

Coronary artery aneurysms are uncommon, are usually associated with atherosclerosis, and rarely involve all three major coronary arteries. Data on the optimal choice of acute myocardial infarction (AMI)´s revascularization in the context of polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is limited to case reports and is still an open question. The present report describes a rare case of a young male patient followed for PAN presenting with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Coronary angiography revealed multiple severe aneurysmal and stenotic changes. Based on clinical feature and angiographic findings, it was st…

PURPOSE: To describe the vascular anatomy and intraluminal flow characteristics of segmental retinal arteritis (SRA) using structural and angiographic optical coherence tomography (OCT).
METHODS: Retrospective case series of consecutive patients presenting with SRA. All patients were evaluated at presentation with fundus photography, spectral domain OCT, and OCT angiography. One patient was imaged with dense B-scan OCT angiography.
RESULTS: Three eyes of three male patients were evaluated. All examinations were consistent with reactivation of ocular toxoplasmosis with an area of active retin…
