Prevalence and factors associated with vitamin C deficiency in inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are prone to several nutritional deficiencies. However, data are lacking on vitamin C deficiency in Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, as well as the impact of clinical, biomarker and endoscopic disease severity on the development of vitamin C deficiency. AIM: To determine proportions and factors associated with vitamin C deficiency in CD and UC patients. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we obtained clinical, laboratory and endoscopic data from CD and UC patients presenting to the IBD clinic at a single t

Plasma vitamin A and C status of in-school adolescents and associated factors in Enugu State, Nigeria.

The study was undertaken to determine the intake of vitamin A and C and plasma concentrations of these vitamins among in-school adolescents. The factors affecting the vitamin status of these adolescents were also determined. Data for this report were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 600 in-school adolescents in Nsukka local government area (LGA) of Enugu State, Nigeria. Ninety and 45 of the adolescents were randomly selected for determining plasma concentrations of vitamin A and C and intake of these vitamins respectively. Dietary assessment was done using a three-day weighed food int

Vitamin C Deficiency in the Young Brain-Findings from Experimental Animal Models.

Severe and long-term vitamin C deficiency can lead to fatal scurvy, which is fortunately considered rare today. However, a moderate state of vitamin C (vitC) deficiency (hypovitaminosis C)-defined as a plasma concentration below 23 μM-is estimated to affect up to 10% of the population in the Western world, albeit clinical hallmarks in addition to scurvy have not been linked to vitC deficiency. The brain maintains a high vitC content and uniquely high levels during deficiency, supporting vitC's importance in the brain. Actions include both antioxidant and co-factor functions, rendering vitamin

Interaction of antioxidants and their implication in genetic anemia.

The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a steady-state cellular event in respiring cells. Their production can be grossly amplified in response to a variety of pathophysiological conditions such as inflammation, immunologic disorders, hypoxia, hyperoxia, metabolism of drug or alcohol, exposure to UV or therapeutic radiation, and deficiency in antioxidant vitamins. Uncontrolled production of ROS often leads to damage of cellular macromolecules (DNA, protein, and lipids) and other small antioxidant molecules. A number of major cellular defense mechanisms exist to neutralize and combat

[The role of ascorbic acid in the combined preoperative preparation of cancer patients].

Urine and blood levels of ascorbic acid (AA) were measured in healthy subjects (40), cases of cancer of the lung (74), stomach (32) and esophagus (12). AA levels were decreased in cancer patients, particularly, in those with gastric and esophageal tumors. A correlation between the decrease of AA level and the increase in blood concentrations of malonic and pyruvic acids was established. Administration of 1.5 g AA for 7 days was followed by blood-AA level returning practically to normal matched by decrease in lactate and pyruvate concentrations. Also, a correlation between postoperative complic

[Iron deficiency anemia and H. pylori].

Although Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a causative agent for chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric carcinoma, this pathogen is also responsible for some extra-gastric diseases. Both epidemiologic and clinical studies suggest that H. pylori infection is a risk factor for iron deficiency anemia (IDA). Several case reports and case series showed reversal of IDA after eradication of H. pylori. Although the mechanisms for H. pylori-associated IDA is not fully understood, H. pylori-induced chronic pangastritis with resultant achlorhydria and reduced ascorbic acid secretion in the gastric

Marginal nutritional status among institutionalized elderly women as compared to those living more independently (Dutch Nutrition Surveillance System).

The nutritional status (assessed by anthropometric indices, and biochemical and hematological variables in blood) of three groups of elderly women (aged > or = 65 years) was evaluated within the framework of the Dutch Nutrition Surveillance System. The groups were composed of women living in a nursing home (n = 51), women living in service flats and receiving their dinners from the nursing home kitchen (n = 29), and women living independently (n = 52). Mean blood levels of folate, pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, alpha-tocopherol, vitamin C, albumin, selenium and total cholesterol

[Effect of lysine, threonine, methionine and vitamin A, C and E deficiency on the liver microsome enzyme system responsible for metabolizing foreign compounds in the rat].

It has been demonstrated that the deficiency of 3 essential amino acids (lysine, threonine and methionine) combined with polyhypovitaminosis A, C and E for 2 months leads to a decrease in the para-hydroxylase and N-demethylase activity in rat liver microsomes. The content of cytochromes P-450 and b5 was also reduced as compared to that in animals given balanced nutrition. However, in such a polynutrient deficiency, the activity of microsomal enzymes was induced by phenobarbital to a greater degree than in balanced nutrition. It is suggested that in polynutrient deficiency, the lacking essentia

Copper nutriture, bioavailability, and the influence of dietary factors.

Copper is known to be an essential nutrient for human beings, but a Recommended Dietary Allowance has not yet been established. A safe and adequate range of intake was established in 1980 for copper and five other trace elements. The range for copper, 2 to 3 mg/day, is higher than the usual dietary copper intake of many individuals in this country. On the basis of balance studies, a requirement of 1.3 mg/day has been suggested. Recent data on copper intake and bioavailability should aid in reevaluating the dietary copper requirement. Copper deficiency symptoms have seldom been observed in huma

Anemia in Sports: A Narrative Review.

Recent years have brought about new understandings regarding the pathogenesis of anemia in sports. From hemodilution and redistribution considered to contribute to the so-called "sports anemia" to iron deficiency caused by increased demands, dietary restrictions, decreased absorption, increased losses, hemolysis, and sequestration, to genetic determinants of different types of anemia (some related to sport), the anemia in athletes deserves a careful and multifactorial approach. Dietary factors that reduce iron absorption (e.g., phytate, polyphenols) and that augment iron's bioavailability (e.g

Recessive congenital methemoglobinemia: a systematic review of reported cases.

BACKGROUND: Recessive congenital methemoglobinemia (RCM) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by a deficiency of NADH-cytochrome b5 reductase. Under normal conditions, cytochrome b5 reductase and NADH reductase maintain methemoglobin in the physiological range by keeping heme iron in the Fe2+ state. RCM presents in two clinical forms. Type I presents with isolated cyanosis, while type II presents also with severe neurocognitive manifestations. Genetic analysis of the CYB5R3 gene is often used for diagnosis. Treatment with methylene blue, ascorbic acid, or riboflavin can reduce

Vitamin E and selenium interrelations in the diet of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar): gross, histological and biochemical deficiency signs.

Either simultaneous or separate dietary deficiencies of vitamin E and selenium in Atlantic salmon during first 4 weeks of feeding caused twice the mortality shown in fish fed both supplemental vitamin E (0.5 IU/g dry diet) and selenium (0.1 mug/g). Subsequent dietary repletion with both vitamin E and selenium significantly reduced mortality during the following 2 weeks. Larger salmon (0.9 g initial mean weight), with vitamin E deficiency with or without selenium resulted in the following deficiency signs: extreme anemia, pale gills, anisocytosis, poikilocytosis, elevated plasma protein, exudat

A Rare Case of Reversible Pulmonary Hypertension Phenotype in a Child with Scurvy: Aetiologies Insights.

Background and Clinical Significance: Scurvy, caused by chronic vitamin C deficiency, is re-emerging in Western countries, particularly among pediatric patients with highly selective diets. While its musculoskeletal and mucocutaneous manifestations are well-known, its association with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is rare and poorly understood. Ascorbic acid and iron are essential cofactors for prolyl hydroxylases (PHD), which regulate Hypoxia-Inducible Factors. Their combined deficiency may trigger a "pseudohypoxic" state, leading to pulmonary vascular remodeling and vasoconstriction.

Nutritional status of primary school children with endemic goitre in Caprivi, Namibia.

The nutritional status of primary school children living in an endemic goitre area in eastern Caprivi, Namibia, was assessed by means of clinical, biochemical, anthropometrical and dietetic observations. An approximately 20 pc sample, consisting of 380 primary school children, aged six to 18 years and representing eight schools in the Cuando River area of eastern Caprivi, was included in the study. Their goitre prevalence of 34.5 pc has been reported earlier. A significantly lower mean thyroxine level in goitrous compared to non-goitrous children indicated that dietary iodine deficiency was th

Ochronotic arthropathy: skeletal manifestations and orthopaedic treatment.

Alkaptonuria is an extremely rare disorder of tyrosine metabolism caused by an autosomal recessive enzymatic deficiency of homogentisic acid (HGA) oxidase, causing its accumulation in collagenous structures, especially in hyaline cartilage. It is characterized by a triad of homogentisic aciduria, bluish-black discoloration of connective tissues (ochronosis) and arthropathy of the spine and large weight-bearing joints. Several clinical manifestations were described including coronary and valvular calcification, aortic stenosis, limited chest expansion, and renal, urethral and prostate calculi a
