Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults: a multilayered approach to a serious disorder of inattention to the future.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects people of all ages, yet its presentation varies as the person matures and social demands increase from childhood into adulthood. Interestingly, when analyzing the disorder in adults, it is not immediately clear what the 'attention deficit' in the ADHD denomination exactly means. Adults with ADHD have a broad range of difficulties, far beyond an attentional deficit, that impact negatively their social functioning and often lead to failures in all walks of life. Therefore, in this review, I attempt to reconcile the notion of attention defic

[Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Tourette disorder (TD): between comorbidity and differential diagnosis].

Tourette Disorder (TD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are both major neuropsychiatric conditions that usually begin during infancy This revision aims to collaborate with pediatricians, who are often confronted with the question of co-morbidity or differential diagnosis between ADHD and TD. The question becomes urgent when the clinician must decide if he/she can start ADHD or TD treatment. We encourage our colleagues to revise our findings, based in bimolecular and neuroanatomic shared issues in addition to updated epidemiological findings. The clinician will find an origin

Adolescent Cannabis Use, Comorbid Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Other Internalizing and Externalizing Disorders.

Cannabis use often co-occurs with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and other internalizing and externalizing disorders. Treatment planning, including pharmacologic and psychosocial interventions, for these comorbid disorders require thorough diagnostic evaluation to determine the extent of social, emotional, and behavioral impairments, severity of substance use, and motivation for change. Improved understanding of these comorbid disorders will inform treatment planning that address current symptoms and behaviors and may also prevent the development of mental health and substance use di

Relationship between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and temporomandibular disorders in adults: a questionnaire-based report.

OBJECTIVE: The symptoms of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) persist in the adult years of life in most cases. They appear in adults with accompanying psychosocial problems. Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) refers to signs and symptoms associated with pain of non-dental origin in the oro-facial region, functional and structural disruptions of the masticatory system, especially the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and masticatory muscles. The aim of the study was to show the relationship between the presence of ADHD symptoms in adulthood, in relation to the intensity of pain ex

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Prisoners: Increased Substance Use Disorder Severity and Psychiatric Comorbidity.

OBJECTIVES: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorders (SUD) are overrepresented among incarcerated populations. We examined whether ADHD was associated with increased severity of comorbid SUD and with increased psychiatric comorbidity among prisoners. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 500 randomly selected Latino male prisoners in the Puerto Rico Correctional System using validated diagnostic measures to assess Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5) ADHD and SUD diagnosis, antisocial personality disorder (ASP) and borderl

[Observation and comparison of social abilities in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder children].

OBJECTIVES: Different studies centered on social relationship issues among ADHD children struggled to provide a unicist explanation between primary social cognition process alteration on the one hand and a mere symptomatic outcome of the disorder triad on the other. Some authors support the idea of a potential "social phenotype" shared at a different intensity by Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The point of the study is to characterize this possible social disability in a French ADHD population and compare it to control subjects and subjects

Frontal volume as a potential source of the comorbidity between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and reading disorders.

Prefrontal volume reductions commonly are demonstrated in ADHD, but the literature examining prefrontal volume in reading disorders (RD) is scant despite their also having executive functioning (EF) deficits. Furthermore, only a few anatomical studies have examined the frontal lobes in comorbid RD/ADHD, though they have EF deficits similar to RD and ADHD. Hence, we examined frontal gyri volume in children with RD, ADHD, RD/ADHD and controls, as well as their relationship to EF for gyri found to differ between groups. We found right inferior frontal (RIF) volume was smaller in ADHD, and smaller

The effect of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and other psychiatric disorders on the treatment of pediatric diabetes mellitus.

OBJECTIVE: Psychiatric diagnoses of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), the severity of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms of the patients and their primary caregivers, and the effects of these factors on treatment were investigated. METHODS: Sixty-one patients with T1DM were included in the study along with their parents. Psychiatric diagnoses of the patients were determined using a semistructured psychiatric interview, and their depression and ADHD symptom severities were evaluated with self-report scales. The ADHD symptom severities of the parents were eval

Risk of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Other Psychiatric Disorders in Siblings of ADHD Probands.

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) occurs more frequently in first-degree relatives. It is believed that this risk is not specific to this disorder but also occurs with other psychopathologies. The study of siblings of ADHD probands is an interesting field since they share common environmental factors. METHODS: This is a narrative literature review. A bibliographic search was performed on PubMed and PsychNet databases and topic-related publications were included without date of publication or study design limits. RESULTS: Siblings of patients with ADHD have a h

Posttraumatic stress disorder in adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: clinical features and familial transmission.

OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by clinically significant functional impairment due to symptoms of inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity. Previous research suggests a link, in child samples, between ADHD and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is characterized by (1) chronically reexperiencing a traumatic event, (2) hyperarousal, and (3) avoiding stimuli associated with the trauma while exhibiting numbed responsiveness. This study sought to address the link between ADHD and PTSD in adults by providing a comprehensive comparison of

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, tic disorder, and allergy: is there a link? A nationwide population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and tic disorder usually co-occur in the same individuals, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Previous evidence has shown that a frequent coexistence of allergic diseases was noted in patients with ADHD or tic disorder. We attempted to investigate the possible link among ADHD, tic disorder, and various allergic diseases. METHODS: Utilizing the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database from 1996 to 2010, 5,811 patients with ADHD alone, 1,816 patients with tic disorder alone, and 349 patients with dual diagnoses of

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder among pathological and at-risk gamblers seeking treatment: a hidden disorder.

BACKGROUND: The links between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and substance use disorders have been the subject of numerous papers. Few studies, however, have focused specifically on the relationship between ADHD and behavioural addictions. The aim of this study was to (i) examine the frequency of pathological and at-risk gamblers having a previous history of ADHD; (ii) give details of the characteristics of this association, and (iii) identify risk factors for a history of ADHD. METHODS: 84 pathological and at-risk gamblers were assessed about socio-demographic, gambling and

Autonomic reactivity in clinically referred children attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder versus anxiety disorder.

This study examined whether children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have lower autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and show less stress reactivity than children with an anxiety disorder. It also explored whether such a difference was accounted for by comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) or conduct disorder (CD) in some of the ADHD children. Forty-three referred children performed a stress task, during which skin conductance (SCL) and heart rate (HR) levels were measured. Results showed that the ADHD group had similar SCL responses as the anxiety disorder group

Clinical implications of a link between fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of the animal and human research literature on the link between fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHOD: We conducted a comprehensive literature review that addressed the history of, and current research on, fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and FASD, as well as that on ADHD in children. RESULTS: In animal and human research, there is emerging clinical, neuropsychological, and neurochemical evidence of a link between FASD and ADHD. CONCLUSIONS: The evidence of the link between these 2 conditions has impl

Critical exploration of co-occurring Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, mood disorder and Substance Use Disorder.

Co-occurring disorders (CODs) describe a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) accompanied by a comorbid psychiatric disorder. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and mood disorders are common CODs with high prevalence rates in SUD populations. It is proposed that literature on a tri-condition presentation of ADHD, mood disorder and SUD is limited. Areas covered: A literature search was conducted using a keyword search on EBSCOhost. Initially 2 799 records were identified, however, only two articles included all three conditions occurring concurrently in individuals. CODs constitute a major

Neuroanatomical correlates of attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder accounting for comorbid oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder.

AIM: An increasing number of neuroimaging studies have been conducted to uncover the pathophysiology of attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The findings are inconsistent, however, at least partially due to methodological differences. In the present study voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to evaluate brain morphology in ADHD subjects after taking into account the confounding effect of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) comorbidity. METHODS: Eighteen children with ADHD and 17 age- and gender-matched typically developing subjects underwent high-spatia

Gender appropriateness of symptom criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional-defiant disorder, and conduct disorder.

We examined the gender appropriateness of the DSM-IV symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder (CD). In Study 1, 100 mothers (35 of children with and 65 of children without ADHD) rated how gender-typical and problematic they saw DSM-IV symptoms of ADHD, ODD, and CD; feminine descriptions of ADHD, ODD, and CD behaviors that we created; and relationally and overtly aggressive behaviors. Mothers rated the DSM-IV symptoms and overt aggression as boy-descriptive, and the feminine items that we created and relational aggres
