Higher socioeconomic status and less parental psychopathology improve prognosis in youths with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: To identify prospectively ascertained individual and family factors that are associated with improvement in Bipolar Disorder (BD) among youths who initially presented with poor course. METHODS: 82 youths with BD with persistent poor mood symptomatology ("predominantly ill course") were compared to 70 youths with BD who at intake had poor course, but showed improvement during the follow-up ("ill with improving course"), (ages 12.3 ± 3.3, vs. 11.7 ± 3.3 years old, at intake). Improvement was measured by the percentage of time euthymic during a mean follow-up of 12.8 years. Youths an

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and whole-blood serotonin levels: effects of comorbidity.

Whole-blood serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) levels were measured in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with and without comorbid conduct disorder (CD) or oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD). It was hypothesized that the whole-blood 5-HT levels of ADHD probands would be significantly correlated with the whole-blood 5-HT levels of their mothers. Fifty-two children who met DSM-III-R criteria for ADHD were selected consecutively from an ADHD clinic (47 males--35 Caucasians, 10 African-Americans, and 2 Hispanics; 10 females--all Caucasians). Whole-blood 5-HT was ass

Integrating Dopamine and BDNF Hypotheses: The Role of Dopamine-BDNF Crosstalk in Neuropathologies.

The dopamine system plays an important role in numerous physiological processes, such as locomotion, emotions, reward behavior, memory, and learning. Differentiation and proper functioning of dopaminergic neurons are largely promoted by the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF is one of the most abundant neurotrophins in the mammalian brain and is implicated in neuronal development, differentiation, and plasticity. Dysfunction of dopaminergic system and BDNF signaling are linked to the pathogenesis of many neurological disorders, including Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, autism s

Factors associated with Tourette syndrome among adolescents in Taiwan: A cross-sectional correlational study.

PURPOSE: Adolescents with Tourette syndrome (TS) may suffer from learning difficulties (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder), challenges in interpersonal interactions (especially with peers), disruptions of daily routines (disruptive behavior disorders), and increased psychosocial stress, which can result in internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems, such as venting depression and stress through self-harm. The aim of this study was to investigate peer attachment in adolescents with TS and associated risk factors. DESIGN AND METHODS: Adolescents with TS aged 13-18 years were rec

Small for gestational age as a predictor of behavioral and learning problems in twins.

The study examines the effects of being born small for gestational age (SGA) on rates of behavioral problems in twins and siblings, utilising data from the Australian Twin Study of disruptive behavior disorders in twins and their siblings. Participants were 3944 twins and their siblings who were assessed at two intervals three years apart. At the first assessment (1991), they ranged between 4 and 12 years of age. Items assessing Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder were based on DSM-III-R criteria (Time 1) and DSM-IV criteria (Time 2). Other measures included history of speech and reading

The Impact of Persistent Irritability on the Medication Treatment of Paediatric Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

This study compares the efficacy and tolerability of central nervous system (CNS) stimulants in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with and without prominent irritability (IRR) over the course of 30 months. This is a secondary analysis of a study examining growth patterns in medication naïve children with ADHD subsequently treated with CNS stimulants (predominantly OROS-Methylphenidate, up to 54 mg per day) for 30 months. Participants had to meet full diagnostic criteria for ADHD and been treated with CNS stimulants for under 30 days. Children were classified as IRR

A naturalistic study of predictors and risks of atypical antipsychotic use in an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder clinic.

OBJECTIVE: This was an exploratory study to examine the use of atypical antipsychotics in an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) clinic. METHOD: A total of 194 patients was examined to compare those receiving atypical or second-generation antipsychotics (atypicals) from those who were not. A sample of 27 children on atypicals received laboratory investigation for indicators of possible metabolic effects. RESULTS: In all, 19.1% of the patients in the clinic were receiving atypicals with a mean duration of 313 days; 36 of 37 patients on atypicals had received risperidone, with a me

Empirical, ethical, and political perspectives on the use of methylphenidate.

The case for methylphenidate (MPH) (Ritalin) rests on claims that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder, that ADHD is biologically rooted, that MPH is effective against ADHD, that nontreatment is developmentally hazardous, and that MPH is a relatively innocuous rather than dangerous treatment. It will be found that the case for MPH rests on the hope that ADHD is a biological disorder and on MPH's short-term suppression of disruptive behavior. The explosion of MPH use on this flimsy evidential base can be explained within a political economy analysis but is difficult to

The mosaic of experience: How individual differences in attention and working memory shape event segmentation.

Episodic memories, although experienced as continuous, are structured into discrete events, a process supported by working memory (WM) and attentional control. Yet, the causal contributions of these mechanisms remain underspecified. This review synthesizes behavioral, cognitive, and neural findings from healthy aging and three cognitive profiles with known WM and attentional control impairments (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder) to clarify how these mechanisms shape event segmentation. Drawing on converging findings across these groups, we o

Oppositional defiant disorder symptomatology after traumatic brain injury: a prospective study.

Our goal was to prospectively study the course of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) symptomatology in children and adolescents in the first 2 years after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Fifty children aged 6 to 14, hospitalized after TBI, were assessed soon after TBI regarding injury severity; preinjury psychiatric, socioeconomic, family functioning, and family psychiatric history status; and neuroimaging was analyzed. ODD symptomatology in the first year after TBI was related to preinjury family function, social class, and preinjury ODD symptomatology. Increased severity of TBI predicted ODD

PCL-R psychopathy predicts disruptive behavior among male offenders in a Dutch forensic psychiatric hospital.

In this study, the relationship between psychopathy, according to the Dutch language version of Hare's Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), and various types of disruptive behavior during inpatient forensic psychiatric treatment is investigated. Ninety-two male participants were administered the PCL-R following admission to an inpatient forensic hospital. From daily hospital information bulletins, incidents of verbal abuse, verbal threat, physical violence, and violation of hospital rules were derived. Also, the number of seclusion episodes was recorded. As expected, significant correlations

Outcomes of early parent-child adrenocortical attunement in the high-risk offspring of depressed parents.

This study examined the impact of parent-child attunement of morning cortisol on parenting and child outcomes in dyads with and without parental depression. Participants included 142 parent-child dyads (3-5 years-old) who provided morning cortisol samples at Wave 1, and 98 dyads returned for the 3-year follow-up at Wave 2. Results indicated that for parents with a history of depression and for female children, stronger attunement predicted increases in parental hostility from Wave 1 to Wave 2. For females only, stronger attunement was related to children's depressive symptoms at Wave 1 and Wav

Perinatal and postnatal risk factors for disruptive mood dysregulation disorder at age 11: 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: To date, there have been few studies of DMDD examining the risk factors during gestation and during the first years of life. We assessed the perinatal and postnatal risk factors associated with the occurrence of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD) by 11 years of age. METHODS: Prospective longitudinal study. Mothers completed a standardized questionnaire shortly after childbirth. We used the Development and Well-Being Assessment, administered to the mothers or legal guardians, to identify DMDD among the 11-year-old subjects. We also employed logistic regression to perform

Telomere length is associated with oppositional defiant behavior and maternal clinical depression in Latino preschool children.

Exposure to psychological stress and depression are associated with shorter white blood cell telomere length (TL) in adults, possibly via associated lifelong oxidative stressors. Exposure to maternal depression increases risk for future depression and behavior problems in children, and Latino youth are at high risk. Few studies have evaluated the role of exposure to maternal depression or child behavior in relation to TL in children. We assessed early-childhood exposures to maternal depression from birth to the age of 5 years and child behavior from ages 3-5 years in a cohort of Latino childre

A multi-domain model of risk factors for ODD symptoms in a community sample of 4-year-olds.

Few studies have been designed to assess the pathways by which risk factors are associated with symptoms of psychopathology across multiple domains, including contextual factors, parental depression, parenting, and child characteristics. The present study examines a cross-sectional model of risk factors for symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) in a diverse community sample of 796 four-year-old children. In the best-fitting model: (a) SES had indirect effects on contextual factors of stress and conflict, parental depression, and parenting factors including hostility, support, and sca

Resistance to thyroid hormone: implications for neurodevelopmental research on the effects of thyroid hormone disruptors.

Thyroid hormones are essential for normal behavioral, intellectual, and neurological development. Congenital hypothyroidism, if not treated, can result in irreversible mental retardation, whereas thyroid diseases with more moderate impairment of thyroid function, such as resistance to thyroid hormone, cause less severe intellectual and behavioral abnormalities, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. There is increasing evidence that exposure to certain synthetic compounds, including dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), during the perinatal period can also impair learning,
