Cancer and non-cancer effects in Japanese atomic bomb survivors.

The survivors of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are a general population of all ages and sexes and, because of the wide and well characterised range of doses received, have been used by many scientific committees (International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiations (BEIR)) as the basis of population cancer risk estimates following radiation exposure. Leukaemia was the first cancer to be associated with atomic bomb radiation exposure, with preliminar

Spinal cord schistosomiasis. A report of 2 cases and review emphasizing clinical aspects.

Schistosomal myeloradiculopathy (SMR) is a severe and little known form of presentation of schistosomiasis mansoni and hematobic schistosomiasis. The literature concerning the entity is scarce, and most publications are limited to isolated case reports. Thus, to consolidate and analyze the knowledge currently available about the disease, I reviewed 231 cases, with emphasis on clinical aspects. Although variations occur, in most cases the clinical picture of SMR is highly suggestive in individuals with epidemiologic antecedents of the infection. Thus, a patient with SMR is usually a young male

A possible basic cortical microcircuit called "cascaded inhibition." Results from cortical network models and recording experiments from striate simple cells.

The robust behavior, the degree of response linearity, and the aspect of contrast gain control in visual cortical simple cells are (amongst others) the result of the interplay between excitatory and inhibitory afferent and intracortical connections. The goal of this study was to suggest a simple intracortical connection pattern, which could also play a role in other cortical substructures, in order to generically obtain these desired effects within large physiological parameter ranges. To this end we explored the degree of linearity of spatial summation in visual simple cells experimentally an

Antihypertensive Medication Class and Functional Outcomes After Nonlobar Intracerebral Hemorrhage.

IMPORTANCE: Hypertension is the predominant pathology underlying nonlobar intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and antihypertensive agents have distinct biological implications for cerebral microvasculature. It is unknown if the class of antihypertensive medications initiated after ICH affects functional outcome beyond blood pressure (BP) control. OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the association between the class of antihypertensive agents initiated during hospitalization and 90-day functional outcome in nonlobar ICH. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study uses data from the Ethnic/Racial Va

Dual-pathway mechanisms of plant-derived polysaccharides in ulcerative colitis: integrative roles of microbiota modulation, immune regulation, and barrier restoration.

Chronic inflammation of the colon has been described as an inflammatory condition of the colon that is characterized by recurring flare-ups of the disease (ulcerative colitis). Ulcerative colitis is a complex inflammatory disorder of the colon that is determined by the combination of several mechanisms: abnormal bacterial flora, inappropriate immune response, and the breakdown of the protective lining of the colon. The last 10 years have seen the emergence of plant derived polysaccharides as new biological active compounds with the potential to intervene at the different levels of the disease.

Deciphering the genomic landscape of Trichophyton indotineae in China and exploring a correlative model for azole resistance prediction.

Background. Trichophyton indotineae is an emerging multidrug-resistant dermatophyte that has rapidly spread across continents, posing a serious threat to global public health. Limited genomic data from mainland China hinder a comprehensive understanding of its evolutionary origin, underscoring the urgent need for molecular susceptibility data to guide clinical antifungal therapy. To clarify the evolutionary origin and genome-wide characteristics of three newly identified clinical isolates of T. indotineae from Fujian Province, China, we sequenced these isolates to a mean coverage of 1,300× usi

Modeling Tenascin-C-rich metastatic tumor niches in engineered hydrogel biomaterials.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays a pivotal role in shaping tumor behavior by providing biochemical and biophysical cues to cancer cells. Traditional 2D culture systems fail to recapitulate this complexity, and in vivo systems do not readily allow for interrogation of how individual ECM components influence tumor cell behavior. Here, we introduce a fully synthetic, tunable three-dimensional (3D) hydrogel that mimics a soft tissue tumor microenvironment (TME) to enable mechanistic studies of ECM-tumor interactions. The hydrogel features a proteolytically degradable poly(ethylene glycol) base

A natural experiment in Kenya reveals durable immunosuppressive effects of early childhood malaria: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic malaria exposure has been proposed to modulate immune function, but its long-term effects on antibody-mediated responses to unrelated pathogens remain poorly defined. Whether these effects persist beyond periods of active infection and how early-life exposure shapes humoral immunity over time is not well understood. METHODS: We leveraged a natural experiment in coastal Kenya - where two regions (Junju and Ngerenya) diverged sharply in malaria transmission from around 2004 - to evaluate the long-term immunological consequences of malaria exposure in childhood. Using a prote

Prevalence of autoantibody responses in COVID-19 patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: An infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) may significantly contribute to the pathogenesis of autoimmune rheumatic diseases; interactions between the virus and defence mechanisms may promote the development of autoimmune processes. Studies have reported elevated levels of autoimmune antibodies in patients with Coronavirus Disease-19 (COVID-19), however, the exact prevalence remains poorly undocumented. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of autoantibodies in COVID-19 patients compared to unaffected individuals. METHODS: Electronic searches

Alterations of brain activity in patients with alcohol use disorder: a resting-state fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) has a negative impact on one's health and wastes a lot of societal resources since it damages one's brain tissue. Yet the knowledge of the neural mechanisms underlying alcohol addiction still remains limited. This study aims to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying alcohol addiction by using voxel-wise binarized degree centrality (DC), weighted DC and functional connectivity (FC) methods to analyze brain network activity in individuals with AUD. METHODS: Thirty-three AUD patients and 29 healthy controls (HC) participated in this study. Binarized a

Gene variants associated with acne vulgaris presentation and severity: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple factors have been attributed to acne vulgaris predisposition and individual variations in the severity of skin symptoms, and genetics stood out as one of the major factors. METHODS: We performed a systematic review on the genes and their variants that have been investigated for association with acne presentation and severity. A random-effect meta-analysis using the allele model (minor allele vs. major allele) was also conducted to provide an overall estimation of risk effects of frequently reported gene variants. This included a subset data of 982 acne cases and 846 contr

Using postmortem formalin fixed paraffin-embedded tissues for molecular testing of sudden cardiac death: A cautionary tale of utility and limitations.

For archived cases of previously young healthy individuals where cause of sudden death remains undetermined, formalin fixed paraffin-embedded tissues (FFPE) samples are often the only biological resource available for molecular testing. We aim to ascertain the validity of postmortem molecular analysis of 95 cardiac genes using the FFPE samples routinely processed in the offices of medical examiners - typical fixation time in formalin ranges from days to months. The study was conducted in the College of American Pathologists accredited Molecular Genetics Laboratory within the City of New York O

Separation of healthy and early osteoarthritis by automatic quantification of cartilage homogeneity.

OBJECTIVE: Cartilage loss as determined either by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or by joint space narrowing in X-rays is the result of cartilage erosion. However, metabolic processes within the cartilage that later result in cartilage loss may be a more accurate assessment method for early changes. Early biological processes of cartilage destruction are among other things, a combination of proteoglycan turnover, as a result of altered charge distributions, and local alterations in water content (edema). As water distribution is detectable by MRI, the aim of this study was to investigate car

Endothelin receptor antagonism.

Following the original report by Yanagisawa et al. (1988) more than 7 years ago, compelling evidence that ET plays an important role in the local regulation of smooth muscle tone and cell growth has been reported. In addition, many studies point to a significant role for endothelin in nonvascular function. The investigation of the endothelin system has been greatly advanced in the last 2 to 3 years through significant advances in the development of potent and selective ET receptor antagonists. These agents have proven to be essential tools for elucidating the biological significance of the ET

Peripheral CCK and ß-Endorphin as Potential Neuroendocrine Markers of Nocebo Effects: Evidence from a Multiple-Threat Pain Paradigm.

INTRODUCTION: Nocebo effects are shaped by negative treatment-related expectations and experiences and can contribute to adverse treatment outcomes. They have been linked to neuroendocrine alterations, yet reliable peripheral biomarkers remain elusive. Although cholecystokinin (CCK) has long been implicated in nocebo hyperalgesia, direct evidence in humans remains limited. β-Endorphin (β-END) is another promising candidate given its established role in endogenous pain modulation and placebo analgesia. The present study aimed to investigate whether peripheral CCK and β-END responses are associa

The challenge of data scarcity and imbalanced classes in radiomics performance.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Radiomics-based machine learning models are increasingly used for clinical decision-making, yet their reliability is often constrained by limited sample sizes and class imbalance in imaging datasets. While prior studies addressed these challenges independently, their combined impact remains insufficiently explored. This study quantifies the individual and joint effects of progressive data scarcity and class imbalance on radiomics model performance, aiming to identify mitigation strategies. METHODS: Three radiomics datasets-PI-CAI (clinically significant prostate can

In-silico patient-specific modelling of prostate cancer: Predicting PSA dynamics and treatment response.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Prostate cancer remains a significant global health concern, with treatment response varying among patients. Radiotherapy, often combined with hormone therapy, is a key treatment approach, but predicting individual outcomes remains challenging. Computational models have emerged as valuable tools to simulate tumour behaviour and optimise treatment strategies. This study presents a patient-specific computational model designed to predict tumour response by associating Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) dynamics with tumour biological behaviour under therapy. METHODS: The

Associations of neighborhood sociodemographic environment with mortality and circulating metabolites among low-income black and white adults living in the southeastern United States.

BACKGROUND: Residing in a disadvantaged neighborhood has been linked to increased mortality. However, the impact of residential segregation and social vulnerability on cause-specific mortality is understudied. Additionally, the circulating metabolic correlates of neighborhood sociodemographic environment remain unexplored. Therefore, we examined multiple neighborhood sociodemographic metrics, i.e., neighborhood deprivation index (NDI), residential segregation index (RSI), and social vulnerability index (SVI), with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer-specific mortality and cir
