During desquamation, the cells of mouse urinary bladder epithelium undergo detachment. In this process we examined the disconnection of cell adhesion molecules. Two proteins of cell junctions were studied: ZO1 of tight junctions and desmoplakin of desmosomes. Desquamation was induced by intravesical injection of LPS, constant illumination of mouse for 96 h, application of a combination of stress hormones hydrocortisone and norepinephrine or by removal of calcium with EGTA. All the inducers caused penetration of lanthanum tracer through the tight junctions, indicating paracellular permeability.

This study was designed to investigate the pathogenesis of chlorine gas (Cl2) induced acute lung injury and oedema. Isolated blood-perfused rabbit lungs were ventilated either with air (n=7) or air plus 500 parts per million (ppm) of Cl2 (n=7) for 10 min. METHOD: A randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 95 children stratified by age and sex was conducted in two hospitals during 1992. The effect of pretreatment with the calcium antagonist nimodipine on the pathophysiological events which follow an intracerebral haemorrhage in rats was compared with a similar control group. Cerebral blood flow was higher and the amount of pathologically determined ischaemic damage measured by light microscopy was less in the nimodipine pretreated group. Bloodbrain barrier permeability was increased in the nimodipine group, but there was no evidence of cerebral oedema. Nimodipine appeared to have no effect on the intracranial pressure.

Morphologic studies were undertaken in a sheep model of pulmonary permeability edema (PPE) induced by cecal ligation and perforation. Biopsies taken every 24 hours through 96 hours following induction of sepsis showed, at 24 hours, interstitial edema accompanied by widespread aggregation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. To evaluate the role of the complement system in inflammation induced by chlorpromazine (CPZ) and ultraviolet-A (UVA) irradiation, the phototoxic response in guinea pigs decomplemented by cobra venom factor was compared with that in saline-treated animals.
