OBJECTIVE: To establish the actual number of maternal deaths in The Netherlands by determining the degree of underreporting.
METHODS: We conducted a nationwide, retrospective cross-check of the three available maternal mortality registration systems and issued a questionnaire to senior obstetricians in all hospitals during the years 1983-1992.
RESULTS: The officially reported maternal mortality rate during the study period was 7.1 per 100,000 live births (133 maternal deaths per 1,862,985 live births). After completion of the study, our data indicate that the rate should be at least 9.7 per

At present there is a shortage of data regarding the rate of routine immunization in Swiss children. To address this deficit, a representative cross sectional study was conducted in the Canton of Zurich with 210 children aged between 24 and 36 months. Multiple epidemiological variables of 131 children with spina bifida born during 1970 and 1979 in a seven-county urban/rural region of south-western Ohio were analyzed retrospectively via personal interviews, hospital and clinic records, and birth and stillbirth certificates. The estimated incidence of spina bifida was 0.69/1000. It did not vary over the 10 years, seasonally, or in the urban vs. rural areas. The incidence for whites was three times that for non-whites. Using records from Ohio annual vital statistics tapes, we describe a method for linking live birth and infant death certificates and for dealing with late-registered and unregistered births. In our 1985-87 Cleveland and East Cleveland study population, deceased infants with late-registered births were found to be similar to those with timely registered births.
