Enhancing Global Cropland Soil Organic Carbon Stability Through Integrated Management Practices.

The ratio of mineral-associated organic carbon to particulate organic carbon (MAOC:POC) can serve as an indicator for assessing relative soil organic carbon (SOC) stability, which is closely linked to climate change mitigation and sustainable agriculture. However, the potential for enhancing relative SOC stability in global croplands, and the corresponding optimized integrated management strategies, remain unclear. Here, we developed a machine learning model that captured the interactions among cropland management practices, soil, and climate factors using a compiled global data set of 2,029 f

Self-organized hummock-hollow patterns redistribute salinity stress in coastal meadows.

Self-organization theory predicts that ecosystem functioning and resilience can emerge from feedbacks that generate spatial patterns. These emergent properties have commonly been explained by local positive feedbacks that concentrate limiting resources within productive patches. Here, we identify a stress-redistribution feedback underlying self-organized hummock-hollow patterning. Through this feedback, salinity stress is partitioned across the patterned landscape, maintaining vegetated hummocks as low-salinity refugia alongside salt-rich hollows and thereby sustaining ecosystem functioning un

Differential effect of internal and external entrapment on athlete's well-being: The multilevel moderating role of grateful climate.

Prior research suggests that being entrapped in helplessness and an inability to escape aversive circumstances may undermine individuals' well-being. In the present study, however, drawing on gratitude-based perspectives, we propose that a team-level grateful climate may buffer the detrimental effects of entrapment on athletes' well-being. A three-year, six-wave longitudinal design was employed with 283 Taiwanese student-athletes (165 males, 118 females; M age = 16.72 years, SD = .47) nested within 62 sports teams. Multilevel modeling showed that external entrapment negatively predicted change

Predicting Climate Change Impact on the Habitat Suitability of the Schistosoma Intermediate Host Oncomelania hupensis in the Yangtze River Economic Belt of China.

Oncomelania hupensis is the exclusive intermediary host of Schistosoma japonicum in China. The alteration of O. hupensis habitat and population distribution directly affects the safety of millions of individuals residing in the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) and the ecological stability of Yangtze River Basin. Therefore, it is crucial to analyze the influence of climate change on the distribution of O. hupensis in order to achieve accurate control over its population. This study utilized the MaxEnt model to forecast possible snail habitats by utilizing snail distribution data obtained from

Use of isotopes in examining precipitation patterns in north-central Ukraine.

North-central Ukraine is vulnerable to temperature increases and precipitation pattern changes associated with climate change. With water management becoming increasingly important, information on current water sources and moisture recycling is critically needed. Isotope ratios of oxygen (δ18O) and hydrogen (δ2H) in precipitation are sensitive to these variables and allow comparisons across the region. The δ2H and δ18O values from collected precipitation in Kyiv and Cherkasy in 2020 and published 3H data for Kyiv from the year 2000 show an influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and

Mapping malaria in Thailand: A Bayesian spatio-temporal analysis of national surveillance data.

OBJECTIVES: Malaria, caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium, remains prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. This study employed Bayesian spatio-temporal analysis to assess malaria incidence patterns and identify environmental and climatic correlates across Thailand at the district level. METHODS: We analysed national malaria surveillance data using Bayesian hierarchical models to examine spatio-temporal patterns in malaria incidence. The model incorporated random effects to account for unobserved heterogeneity across locations and over time, enabling robust inferences o

Implications of climate change on the distribution of the tick vector Ixodes scapularis and risk for Lyme disease in the Texas-Mexico transboundary region.

BACKGROUND: Disease risk maps are important tools that help ascertain the likelihood of exposure to specific infectious agents. Understanding how climate change may affect the suitability of habitats for ticks will improve the accuracy of risk maps of tick-borne pathogen transmission in humans and domestic animal populations. Lyme disease (LD) is the most prevalent arthropod borne disease in the US and Europe. The bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi causes LD and it is transmitted to humans and other mammalian hosts through the bite of infected Ixodes ticks. LD risk maps in the transboundary region

Detection of major climatic and environmental predictors of liver fluke exposure risk in Ireland using spatial cluster analysis.

Fasciolosis caused by Fasciola hepatica (liver fluke) can cause significant economic and production losses in dairy cow farms. The aim of the current study was to identify important weather and environmental predictors of the exposure risk to liver fluke by detecting clusters of fasciolosis in Ireland. During autumn 2012, bulk-tank milk samples from 4365 dairy farms were collected throughout Ireland. Using an in-house antibody-detection ELISA, the analysis of BTM samples showed that 83% (n=3602) of dairy farms had been exposed to liver fluke. The Getis-Ord Gi* statistic identified 74 high-risk

Factors driving the circulation and possible expansion of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus in the western Palearctic.

AIMS: To produce a spatial risk map regarding spread of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) in the western Palearctic by linking a process-driven model of the main tick vector, Hyalomma marginatum, to a Next Generation Matrix. METHODS AND RESULTS: Process-driven model was composed of deterministic equations that simulate developmental and mortality rates of different tick stages by using temperature and atmospheric water vapour data. The model used climate data at 10-day intervals at a spatial resolution of 10 min over western Palearctic. The model estimated the basic reproduction

Hurricane disturbance results in positive effects on tropical stream meiofauna abundance and richness.

Hurricanes are major natural disturbances that significantly influence tropical ecosystems. While most research focuses on large-bodied organisms, understanding the impact of hurricanes on small-bodied biota, such as meiofauna, is crucial, especially as climate change models predict more frequent and intense storms. Puerto Rico offers a unique setting to study these effects, as hurricanes and tropical storms are frequent. This research examined the short- (Post-Hurricane A) and medium-term (Post-Hurricane B) impacts of Hurricanes Irma and María (September 2017) on stream meiofaunal communities

Molecular basis of cholera blood-group dependence and implications for a world characterized by climate change.

Climate change has the potential to increase the threat of water-borne diseases, through rises in temperature and sea-level, and precipitation variability. Cholera poses a particular threat, and the need to develop better intervention tools is imminent. Cholera infections are particularly severe for blood group O individuals, who are less protected by the current vaccines. Here we derive a hypothesis as to the molecular origins of blood-group dependence of this disease, based on relevant epidemiological, clinical and molecular data, and give suggestions on how to plan prevention strategies, an

Projected burden of cold spell-attributable Parkinson's disease mortality among older adults in China under climate change and population ageing.

Population ageing may amplify cold-related health risks under climate change, particularly for older adults with Parkinson's disease (PD). We developed a climate-ageing projection framework to estimate the burden of cold spell-attributable PD mortality in China by integrating national mortality data, climate projections, and demographic forecasts. We analyzed 59,384 PD deaths among adults aged 60 years and older in China mainland during 2013-2020 using a time-stratified case-crossover design. Cold spells were associated with an increase in mortality, with effects concentrated within lags 0-4;

Synergistic pollution-climate-host interactions drive nonlinear flea dynamics on Mongolian gerbils.

BACKGROUND: As climate change and human activities intensify, the ecological responses of rodent ectoparasitic flea (Siphonaptera) communities and their population dynamics exhibit nonlinear characteristics. However, the synergistic effects of air pollution and climatic drivers, and the critical role of host traits in modulating these interactions, remain poorly understood. METHODS: We conducted a nine-month field survey of Mongolian gerbils and their fleas on the Ordos Plateau, China, integrating our collections with high-resolution meteorological and Air Quality Index (AQI) data. We develope

Modelling Cooperia oncophora: Quantification of key parameters in the parasitic phase.

Cooperia oncophora is one of the most common intestinal nematodes in cattle. It is also the dose-limiting species for the most frequently used anthelmintics, and consequently, the species usually involved in reports of anthelmintic resistance. However, little information is available on its population dynamics, hindering the parameterisation of transmission models to support understanding of the impact of anthelmintic resistance, climate change and alternative control strategies on nematode epidemiology. This systematic review and meta-analysis provides estimates for key life history traits of

[Cashier's workplace].

Individuals working at the cashier's desk increasingly suffer from problems in the neck and shoulder region as well as elbow and wrist joints. Further complaints of this group include headache, eye irritation, insomnia, and nervousness. The law requires a structured setting for the cashier's desk itself as well as the working environment, i.e., lighting, climate, noise, etc., and the work organization, such as work routine, hours of work, and breaks. Various score models are available for evaluating the above-mentioned factors. Initial attempts to view the cashier's desk as a whole system have

Climate-induced hydraulic stress and geomorphological changes: an assessment of vulnerability of critical river infrastructure in the data-scarce basin, India.

Climate non-stationarity increasingly threatens river infrastructure, yet its quantified impact on bridge pier scour in data-scarce tropical basins remains poorly constrained. The study evaluates the climate-induced modification of the river hydrology, hydraulics and channel behaviour of the data-scarce Rupnarayan river basin in the peri-urban zone of eastern India using a case study of the Kolaghat Bridge. A high-resolution model, the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model version 1.2 Higher Resolution (MPI-ESM1-2-HR), was downscaled, bias-corrected, and coupled with a Soil and Water Assessm

Spatial distribution models of seroreactive sheep to Leptospira spp. in Veracruz, Mexico.

Leptospirosis is an infectious zoonotic disease of special importance in tropical regions of the world and is closely related to climatic conditions. In Mexico, at least eight Leptospira serogroups are known to affect sheep, but little is known about their distribution. The aim was to analyse the spatial distribution of seroreactive sheep to eight serogroups of Leptospira spp. through ecological niche modelling from the state of Veracruz. We carried out a cross-sectional, multistage, and stratified epidemiological study, sampling 405 sheep in different regions of the state (north, center, and

Psychometric properties of the Curiosity and Exploration Inventory-II among Kenyan adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Curiosity is a fundamental trait that drives exploration, motivation, learning, and growth. However, research on this character strength in sub-Saharan African populations is very scarce. To address this gap in the literature, we sought to determine the psychometric properties of the Curiosity and Exploration Inventory- II (CEI-II), a measure for trait curiosity, to provide evidence of validity for its use in research among populations in sub-Saharan Africa. We also aimed to assess for demographic and psychosocial correlates of curiosity among Kenyan high school students. METHOD
