BACKGROUND: Cochlear Implantation (CI) is an effective surgical approach to rehabilitate the severe to profound hearing-impaired patients. However, the insertion of CI electrodes into the cochlea may adversely affect vestibular receptors, resulting in vertigo or dizziness. The present study aimed to investigate the impacts of Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT) exercises on dizziness symptoms of patients who underwent CI.
METHODS: A total of 21 consecutive patients (age range: 28 to 61 years) with profound sensorineural hearing loss undergoing CI operation participated. The VRT therapy pl…

BACKGROUND: Vestibular symptoms such as vertigo and imbalance are known to occur in some cochlear implant patients during the immediate postoperative period; however, acute vertigo in implanted children occurring remotely from the postoperative period has not been previously well-described.
CASE PRESENTATION: A three-year-old girl with a history of bilateral sequential cochlear implantation presented with acute labyrinthitis associated with sudden onset of vertigo, balance impairment, and decline in right cochlear implant function 2 years after her most recent implant surgery. We describe her…

Purpose: Cochlear implants (CIs) provide reasonable levels of speech recognition quietly, but voice pitch perception is severely impaired in CI users. The central question addressed here relates to how access to acoustic input pre-implantation influences vocal emotion production by individuals with CIs. The objective of this study was to compare acoustic characteristics of vocal emotions produced by prelingually deaf school-aged children with cochlear implants (CCIs) who were implanted at the age of 2 and had no usable hearing before implantation with those produced by children with normal hea

OBJECTIVE: Fitting cochlear implants, especially the precise determination of electrical hearing thresholds, is a time-consuming and complex task for patients as well as audiologists. Aim of the study was to develop a method that enables cochlear implant (CI) patients to determine their electrical hearing thresholds precisely and independently. Applicability and impact of this method on speech perception in noise at soft speech levels were evaluated.
METHOD: An adaptive psychoacoustic procedure for precise hearing threshold determination (precT) was implemented using MatLab (MathWorks) and a

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the histopathology of human temporal bones (HTBs) with cochlear implants (CI).
BACKGROUND: Understanding CI translocation injuries is critical for improving outcomes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirteen HTBs from 12 CI patients were studied. Six HTBs exhibited translocation with localized injury (Group 1) and seven HTBs exhibited translocation with significant lateral wall injury (Group 2). There were no significant differences between Group 1 and Group 2 for age at death, age at implantation, and years with CI.
RESULTS: Four out of six of Group 1 had round window approach

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation (CI) has been reported to negatively affect vestibular function. The study of vestibular function has variably been conducted using different types of diagnostic tools. The combined use of modern, rapidly performing diagnostic tools could prove useful for standardization of the evaluation protocol.
METHODS: In a group of 28 subjects undergoing CI, the video head impulse test (vHIT), the cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMP) and the short form of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) questionnaire were investigated preoperatively and postop…

Mandarin is a tonal language, and it is important to preserve lexical tone information in synthesized speech. With natural speech, Chinese cochlear implant (CI) users have difficulty perceiving voice pitch cues important for lexical tone perception; it is unclear whether this difficulty persists in Mandarin synthesized speech. In this study, intelligibility of naturally produced and synthesized Mandarin speech was measured in Chinese CI listeners; intelligibility was also measured in a control group of normal-hearing (NH) listeners. Five synthesized voices were selected to represent different

BACKGROUND: After cochlear implant (CI) surgery, some patients experience vertigo, dizziness and/or deficits in vestibulo-ocular reflexes. However, little is known about the effect of CI surgery on balance control. Therefore, we examined differences in stance and gait balance control before versus after CI surgery.
METHODS: Balance control of 30 CI patients (mean age 59, SD 15.4 years), receiving a first unilateral CI surgery, was measured preoperatively and postoperatively 1 month after the initial implant stimulation (2 months after surgery). Trunk sway was measured during 14 stance and gai

BACKGROUND: Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection is a major cause of sensorineural hearing loss in children.
OBJECTIVE OF REVIEW: Th … raisal, 12 studies remained for data extraction. Seven of 12 studies showed worse performance after cochlear implantation in cCMV children compared to non-cCMV children. Worse performance in cCMV children was attributed to cCMV-related comorbidities in six of these studies. Available data on asymptomatic cCMV children compared to non-cCMV children did not reveal an unf …

Mumps virus occasionally causes bilateral hearing loss. We report 4 cases of bilateral mumps deafness in whom cochlear implantations (CI) were performed. The age at the onset of hearing loss was 1-9 years. CI surgery was performed within 6 months from the onset of hearing loss in 3 cases and after 9 years in the other case, showing good speech perception in the early intervention cases and a poor outcome after later implantation. Early CI surgery is highly recommended in sudden onset deafness by mumps in childhood.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the current study is to evaluate how speech recognition performance is affected by the number of active electrodes that are turned off in multichannel cochlear implants. Several recent studies have demonstrated positive effects of deactivating stimulation sites based on an objective measure in cochlear implant processing strategies. Previous studies using an analysis of variance have shown that, on average, cochlear implant listeners' performance does not improve beyond eight active electrodes. We hypothesized that using a generalized linear mixed model would allow

Cochlear implant (CI) surgery is the standard of care for postlingual deafness in adults. A hearing aid (HA) for the non-implanted ear is normally used if residual hearing is available. There is limited data on bimodal stimulation in elderly patients. We compare the outcome of bimodal stimulation and analyzed the correlation of bimodal benefit and residual hearing in elderly patients. 22 patients≥70 years were implanted with a single-sided CI from 2002 till 2014. 17 patients use a HA on the non-implanted ear (bimodal). In a retrospective chart review we analyzed the audiological benefit (pure

Background: Nose reference (NR), mastoid reference (MR), and montage average reference (MAR) are usually used in auditory event-related potential (AEP) studies with a recently developed reference electrode standardization technique (REST), which may reduce the reference effect. For children with cochlear implants (CIs), auditory deprivation may hinder normal development of the auditory cortex, and the reference effect may be different between CIs and a normal developing group. Methods: Thirteen right-side-CI children were recruited, comprising 7 males and 6 females, ages 2-5 years, with CI usa

BACKGROUND: Hearing restoration after translabyrinthine vestibular schwannoma resection is a challenge. Because the cochlea can begin to ossify a few months after cochlear or labyrinthine injury, the time interval for cochlear implant surgery is limited. To avoid complete ossification and to prolong the time interval until cochlear implantation, it is possible to insert a placeholder (depth gauge) into the cochlea and perform the cochlear implant surgery at a later time point (two-stage approach).
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective case series was to present the outcomes after restorati…

Granulomatosis with polyangitis is a rare granuloma forming necrotizing vasculitis, which involves mainly the respiratory tract and renal system. Otologic involvement may occur primarily as chronic serous otitis media and chronic silent mastoiditis with conductive hearing loss and may rarely lead to sensorineural hearing loss requiring cochlear implantation. This case describes a patient with granulomatous poylangitis with profound sensorineural hearing loss who underwent subtotal petrosectomy with cochlear implantation.
