SMART accelerates rate of cognitive gains in service members with mTBI and PTSD.

INTRODUCTION: This randomized clinical trial (RCT) compared the efficacy of two cognitive rehabilitation (CR) protocols-Strategic Memory Advanced Reasoning Training (SMART) and Study of Cognitive Rehabilitation Effectiveness (SCORE)-in improving higher-order cognitive functions among active-duty service members (ADSMs) with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and varying levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. The study also examined the relationship between PTSD symptom severity and cognitive outcomes. METHODS: A total of 148 ADSMs with mTBI and persistent cognitive complain

Effects of VR exercise interventions on cognitive function and physical function in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of VR exercise with traditional exercise on cognition and physical functions in older adults. METHODS: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, and CBM were searched for relevant RCT from inception until 20 June 2024. RESULTS: Thirty-four studies were included. None of the studies reported VR intolerance in older adults. Significant differences in global cognition (SMD: 0.32, P = 0.01), attention (SMD: -0.57, P = 0.05), and walking capacity (MD: -0.62 s, P < 0.001) were observed between the VR training and traditional training groups. Communicating using the eyes without remembering it: cognitive rehabilitation in a severely brain-injured patient with amnesia, tetraplegia and anarthria.

We describe here a case of cognitive rehabilitation in a young patient with closed head injury, who had dense anterograde amnesia and such disabling neurological defects (tetraplegia and anarthria) that the condition evoked some features of an incomplete locked-in syndrome. After a prolonged period of no communicative possibility, the patient underwent a specific training, based on principles of errorless learning, with the aim of using a computerized eye-tracker system. Although, due to memory disturbances, the patient always denied ever having used the eye-tracker system, learned to use the

Research and practice with congenital amputees: making the whole greater than the sum of its parts.

This paper highlights the need for methodologically sound research on the motor, cognitive and psychosocial development of children with congenital limb deficiencies and the integration of findings in these three areas. Such topics have received little attention in the literature and systematic attempts to apply developmental theory to the assessment, fitting, training and evaluation of these children seldom have been made. A number of important current issues in research and practice are critically reviewed including optimal age for fitting, training procedures, prosthesis usage, cognitive de

Obesity is associated with increased brain glucose uptake and activity but not neuroinflammation (TSPO availability) in monozygotic twin pairs discordant for BMI-Exercise training reverses increased brain activity.

AIMS: Obesity is associated with increased insulin-stimulated brain glucose uptake (BGU) which is opposite to decreased GU observed in peripheral tissues. Increased BGU was shown to be reversed by weight loss and exercise training, but the mechanisms remain unknown. We investigated whether neuroinflammation (TSPO availability) and brain activity drive the obesity-associated increase in BGU and whether this increase is reversed by exercise training. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve monozygotic twin pairs mean age 40.4 (SD) years discordant for BMI (leaner mean 29.1 (SD) 6.3, heavier 36.7 (SD) 7.0

The RETAIN Simulation-Based Serious Game-A Review of the Literature.

Background: Each year, over 13 million babies worldwide need help to breathe at birth. While guidelines recommend the Neonatal Resuscitation Program course, medical errors remain common. Frequent simulation training and assessment is needed to address this competence gap; however, alternative approaches are needed to overcome barriers to access. The RETAIN (REsuscitation TrAINing) simulation-based serious game (Retain Labs Medical Inc., Edmonton, AB, Canada) may provide a solution to supplement traditional training. This paper aims to review the available evidence about RETAIN for improving ne

The representational geometry of cognitive maps under cognitive control.

Recent work has shown that the brain abstracts non-spatial relationships between entities or task states into representations called cognitive maps. Here, we investigate how cognitive control enables flexible top-down selection of goal-relevant information from multidimensional cognitive maps retrieved from memory. We examine the relationship between cognitive control and representational geometry by conducting parallel analyses of functional magnetic resonance imaging data and recurrent neural network models trained to perform the same task. We find both stable map-like representations in a m

Changes in brain activation related to visuo-spatial memory after real-time fMRI neurofeedback training in healthy elderly and Alzheimer's disease.

Cognitive decline is a symptom of healthy ageing and Alzheimer's disease. We examined the effect of real-time fMRI based neurofeedback training on visuo-spatial memory and its associated neuronal response. Twelve healthy subjects and nine patients of prodromal Alzheimer's disease were included. The examination spanned five days (T1-T5): T1 contained a neuropsychological pre-test, the encoding of an itinerary and a fMRI-based task related that itinerary. T2-T4 hosted the real-time fMRI neurofeedback training of the parahippocampal gyrus and on T5 a post-test session including encoding of anothe

Neural correlates of working memory training in HIV patients: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Potent combined antiretroviral therapy decreased the incidence and severity of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND); however, no specific effective pharmacotherapy exists for HAND. Patients with HIV commonly have deficits in working memory and attention, which may negatively impact many other cognitive domains, leading to HAND. Since HAND may lead to loss of independence in activities of daily living and negative emotional well-being, and incur a high economic burden, effective treatments for HAND are urgently needed. This study aims to determine whether adaptive working

The Influence of Elementary School Personnel's Achievement Goal Orientation on CPR Education Immersion and Self-Management.

Despite mandatory cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training for elementary school personnel in South Korea, current programs are often delivered as uniform, compliance-oriented sessions that prioritize procedural completion over sustained engagement and self-regulated practice. However, little empirical evidence explains why some participants remain actively engaged and capable of self-managing CPR skills after mandatory training, while others do not. In this study, immersion in CPR education refers to learners' cognitive and behavioral engagement during training, reflecting their concentra

Evaluating the effects of visual character-based enhancements in cognitive bias modification for depression: A proof-of-concept randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Clinical depression is highly prevalent worldwide, yet many patients remain inadequately treated. Cognitive Bias Modification for Interpretation (CBMI) is a promising, cost-effective digital intervention that targets negative thinking patterns by repeatedly resolving ambiguous scenarios in neutral or positive ways. This study examined whether enhancing CBM-I for depression with graphics and character-based cognitive embodiment could improve presence, immersion, and therapeutic effects. METHODS: A total of 138 participants were randomized into four groups: traditional CBM-I (Text-O
