Successfully controlling malaria in South Africa.

Following major successes in malaria control over the past 75 years, South Africa is now embarking on a malaria elimination campaign with the goal of zero local transmission by the year 2018. The key control elements have been intensive vector control, primarily through indoor residual spraying, case management based on parasitological diagnosis using evidence-based drug policies with artemisinin-based combination therapy since 2001, active health promotion in partnership with communities living in the malaria transmission areas, and cross-border collaborations. Political commitment and long-t

Community-based surveillance advances the Global Health Security Agenda in Ghana.

Ghana Health Service (GHS) has strengthened community-based surveillance (CBS) to facilitate early detection and rapid reporting of health events of all origins. Since June 2017, GHS has employed an event-based surveillance approach at the community level in a phased manner. CBS coverage has broadened from 2 to 30 districts across Ghana. Through this effort, capacity was built across all administrative levels in these districts to detect, report, triage, and verify signals, and to perform risk assessment and investigate events. Data were collected and analyzed during an evaluation of initial 2

Challenges of infectious diseases in the USA.

In the USA, infectious diseases continue to exact a substantial toll on health and health-care resources. Endemic diseases such as chronic hepatitis, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections affect millions of individuals and widen health disparities. Additional concerns include health-care-associated and foodborne infections--both of which have been targets of broad prevention efforts, with success in some areas, yet major challenges remain. Although substantial progress in reduction of the burden of vaccine-preventable diseases has been made, continued cases and outbreaks of these dise

Problems of infection after bone marrow transplantation.

Representatives of 17 bone marrow transplant (BMT) teams met to discuss the problems of infection after BMT. With experience of more than 2200 transplanted patients over the past 10 yr, the changes in the patterns of infection were surprisingly similar. Deaths due purely to bacterial infection have greatly diminished and the major early problems today result from fungi and cytomegalovirus. The role of non-herpes group viruses has only recently received attention. With increasing numbers of survivors, late bacterial infections are assuming importance. The meeting also provided an opportunity to

Assessing parents' and children's psychological well-being and its associated factors during the COVID-19 lockdown in a Tunisian-North African population.

BACKGROUND: The rapidly emerging Coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread around the world yielding in significant changes in almost every aspect of daily life. While primary research of the epidemic COVID-19 has focused on the psychological impact on the general population and health professionals, no survey of the pandemic-resulting containment on parents and their children has been yet addressed in the Tunisian-North African population. This study aimed to assess the psychological profile of parents and youth in Tunisia during a period of COVID 19 lockdown, and to identify

Community-based testing of migrants for infectious diseases (COMBAT-ID): impact, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of identifying infectious diseases among migrants in primary care: protocol for an interrupted time-series, qualitative and health economic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Migration is a major global driver of population change. Certain migrants may be at increased risk of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis (TB), HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, and have poorer outcomes. Early diagnosis and management of these infections can reduce morbidity, mortality and onward transmission and is supported by national guidelines. To date, screening initiatives have been sporadic and focused on individual diseases; systematic routine testing of migrant groups for multiple infections is rarely undertaken and its impact is unknown. We describe the protocol

[The status of vaccine preventable diseases in Germany].

The European members of the World Health Assembly (WHO) adopted the goal of eliminating poliomyelitis by the year 2000 (certification 2003), tetanus of the newborn by 2005 and measles by 2007 (certification 2010). Regarding the reduction by 2010 diphtheria, hepatitis B, pertussis and rubella syndrome are in the foreground of discussions. As WHO-member Germany looks after these aims with growing acceptance, too. The current situation of the specific target illnesses is differentiated in the eastern and western part of Germany. While the final stage of certification for a polio-free region in th

Immunization against infectious disease.

Mortality and morbidity from infectious diseases in the United States have declined more than 90 percent since 1900. Factors believed to be responsible for this decline include changes in the natural history of disease, sanitation, quarantine measures, control of nonhuman vectors, antibacterial drugs, and immunization. The contributions of each of these factors differ among the various infectious diseases; except for smallpox and diphtheria control, immunization had little effect until after World War II. The success of present and future immunization programs is endangered by public and physi

[Did entry into nursing home during the health crisis favor the emergence of traumatic symptoms in the elderly?: Entry into nursing home and Covid].

Our aim is to explore the possible emergence of traumatic symptoms and the identity-related repercussions of the restrictions on elderly, who entered into nursing homes during the Covid-19 health crisis in France. Twenty-five subjects institutionalised before the health crisis and twenty-six subjects institutionalised during the periods of lockdown into nursing homes completed scales assessing anxiety-depressive symptomatology, traumatic symptoms and identity. Anxiety and depression symptoms were similar between the groups. The institutionalised group showed a significantly higher prevalence o

Social dilemma of nonpharmaceutical interventions: Determinants of dynamic compliance and behavioral shifts.

In fighting infectious diseases posing a global health threat, ranging from influenza to Zika, nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPI), such as social distancing and face covering, remain mitigation measures public health can resort to. However, the success of NPI lies in sufficiently high levels of collective compliance, otherwise giving rise to recurrent infections that are not only driven by pathogen evolution but also changing vigilance in the population. Here, we show that compliance with each NPI measure can be highly dynamic and context-dependent during an ongoing epidemic, where individu

Factors Associated With the Changes in Smoking and Electronic cigarette use in Adolescents During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Longitudinal Analysis.

PURPOSE: Explore the factors associated with the changes in smoking and electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use and susceptibility among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We surveyed a cohort of students (7th-12th grade) from private schools in Guatemala. Baseline (May-September 2019) was conducted in-person and follow-up (June-November 2020) online during the lockdown. Separate Generalized Estimating Equations logistic models regressed current smoking (n = 3,729), current e-cigarette use (n = 3,729), smoking susceptibility among never-smokers (n = 2,596), and susceptibility t

Impact of the First COVID-19 Pandemic Wave on Hospitalizations and Deaths Caused by Geriatric Syndromes in France: A Nationwide Study.

BACKGROUND: The fear of contracting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the preventive measures taken during the health crisis affected both people's lifestyles and the health system. This nationwide study aimed to investigate the impact of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic on hospitalizations and mortality related to geriatric syndromes (GS) in older adults in France. METHODS: The French National Health Data System was used to compare hospital admissions (excluding the main diagnosis of COVID-19) and mortality rates (using multiple-cause and initial-cause analyses, and both includi

Estimating the time-varying reproduction number for COVID-19 in South Africa during the first four waves using multiple measures of incidence for public and private sectors across four waves.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to quantify transmission trends in South Africa during the first four waves of the COVID-19 pandemic using estimates of the time-varying reproduction number (R) and to compare the robustness of R estimates based on three different data sources, and using data from public and private sector service providers. METHODS: R was estimated from March 2020 through April 2022, nationally and by province, based on time series of rt-PCR-confirmed cases, hospitalisations, and hospital-associated deaths, using a method that models daily incidence as a weighted sum of

Drinking to Cope Mediates the Association between Dyadic Conflict and Drinking Behavior: A Study of Romantic Couples during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic spurred public health measures to reduce viral spread. Concurrently, increases in alcohol consumption and conflict in romantic partnerships were observed. Pre-pandemic research demonstrated a bidirectional association between couples' conflict and drinking. Recent research shows one's drinking motives (proximal predictors of drinking behavior) can influence another person's drinking in close relationships. It is possible that individuals are drinking to cope with distress following romantic conflict. The current study examined 348 cohabitating couples during the first loc

Review of EEG-based neurofeedback as a therapeutic intervention to treat depression.

Depression, or major depressive disorder, is a common mental disorder that affects individuals' behavior, mood, and physical health, and its prevalence has increased during the lockdowns implemented to curb the COVID-19 pandemic. There is an urgent need to update the treatment recommendations for mental disorders during such crises. Conventional interventions to treat depression include long-term pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Electroencephalogram-neurofeedback (EEG-NF) training has been suggested as a non-invasive option to treat depression with minimal side effects. In thi

Characteristics and correlates of disease-related knowledge and exercise self-efficacy among cardiac patients attending virtual cardiac rehabilitation during the first COVID-19 lockdown in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Government responses and restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., limits to non-urgent health care services, including non-urgent outpatient appointments) led to the suspension of center-based (in-person) cardiac rehabilitation (CR), with many programs switching to virtual delivery. This study aimed to understand the characteristics and correlates of disease-related knowledge and exercise self-efficacy in a group of patients attending a virtual CR program during the first COVID-19 lockdown in Peru. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 240 patients receiving vi
