ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Aqueous extracts of bark and leaves of C. cordifolia are traditionally used in Mali (West Africa) in the treatment of wounds and gastric ailments like abdominal pain, gastritis and gastric ulcers.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate and compare the anti-ulcer and immunological activities, as well as the toxicity of polysaccharide rich water extracts from the bark and leaves of C. cordifolia.

Coccidioidomycosis is a deep mycotic infection endemic to the southwestern United States. Although it has also been reported to occur in nonendemic areas, it has rarely been reported in Taiwan. We report a case of disseminated coccidioidomycosis which is the first such case reported on this island. The 28-year-old male patient developed a nonproductive cough and fever while travelling in Arizona. The examinations have involved 177 subjects (80 of these were regularly examined for a year), 148 of them suffering from acute or chronic diseases of the liver and 29 normal subjects. Circulating immune complexes (CIC) containing specific liver lipoprotein (SLL) were detected by the enzyme-binding immunosorption complement-fixation test. SLL CICs are most frequently detectable in the patients with acute hepatitis B (in 19 of 48), with chronic active autoimmune hepatitis (in 8 of 9), and with primary biliary cirrhosis of the liver (in 18 of 20 patients).

The spectrum of 182 hospital Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections, collected over a five-year period, is reviewed. The diagnosis was based on complement fixation test. Mycoplasma infection was encountered mainly in young people, mean age 29 years. Eighty-four per cent presented with an atypical pneumonia, 33 per cent had extrapulmonary manifestations mainly neurological and cutaneous. Acute respiratory failure occurred in 32 cases. Only 5 patients died. Macrolides or tetracyclines remain the most effective antibiotics but spontaneous recovery is usual.

22 cases of syphilis were diagnosed in the last part of 1982 in the Department of Dermatology and Venereology. Out of them 21 were male cases and 16 were homo- or bisexuals. Most cases were in the secondary stage and Herxheimer reaction only developed in these. Serological titers to both lipoidal and treponemal antigens were extremely high. All bisexual males were positive in herpes and CMV complement fixation test. Two of the homosexuals appeared with iridocyclitis and motile treponemes were isolated from the anterior chamber in one case.

The first reported outbreak of St. Louis encephalitis in Canada occurred in the summer of 1975 in southern Ontario -- in the Windsor-Sarnia-Chatham area, the Niagara region and the city of Toronto. Swine brucellosis caused by Brucella suis biovar 2 is an emerging disease in Europe. A dot-ELISA (d-ELISA) test was evaluated and compared with the serum agglutination test (SAT), micro-complement fixation test (CFT) and a plate-ELISA (p-ELISA) for field use in screening herds of goats against brucellosis. The CF and HI antibody titers to rubella and measles viruses, the CF titers to influenxa A, and the HI titers to parainfluenza 1, 2, and 3 were carried out on the sera of 20 patients with childhood polymyositis and their matched controls. The titers for measles, parainfluenxa 1, and influenza A were slightly higher for patients than for controls. The control group had antibody titers to rubella and parainfluenza 2 and 3 higher than or similar to those of patients. Strong patterns or significant differences for a given virus or virus group were not encountered.
