Development and Evaluation of a Diet Quality Index for Preschool-Aged Children in an Asian population: The Growing Up in Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes cohort.

BACKGROUND: Diet quality indexes are useful tools to measure diet quality because they compare dietary intakes against recommendations. A dietary quality index for Asian preschool-aged children is lacking. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to develop and evaluate a dietary quality index for preschool-aged children (ie, the DQI-5) based on Singapore dietary recommendations and to examine diet quality in a cohort of 5-year-old children. An additional aim was to assess associations between sociodemographic characteristics and DQI-5 scores. DESIGN: A secondary analysis was conducted using d

Development of a Diet Quality Screener for Global Use: Evaluation in a Sample of US Women.

BACKGROUND: Valid and efficient tools for measuring and tracking diet quality globally are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to develop and evaluate a new tool for rapid and cost-efficient diet quality assessment. DESIGN: Two screener versions were designed using Prime Diet Quality Score (PDQS), one in a 24-hour recall (PDQS-24HR) and another in a 30-day (PDQS-30D) food frequency format. Participants completed two 24-hour diet recalls using the Automated Self-Administered 24-hour Dietary Assessment Tool (ASA24) and 2 web-based diet quality questionnaires 7 to 30 days apart i

Effect of Dietary Acetic Acid Supplementation on Plasma Glucose, Lipid Profiles, and Body Mass Index in Human Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acetic acid is a short-chain fatty acid that has demonstrated biomedical potential as a dietary therapeutic agent for the management of chronic and metabolic illness comorbidities. In human beings, its consumption may improve glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity in individuals with cardiometabolic conditions and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Published clinical trial evidence evaluating its sustained supplementation effects on metabolic outcomes is inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis summarized available evidence on potential therapeutic effects of d

Head and Neck Cancer Survivors' Experiences with Chronic Nutrition Impact Symptom Burden after Radiation: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors may face an array of nutrition impact symptoms (NIS), including dysphagia, xerostomia, taste alterations, and difficulty chewing, which occur as a result of tumor location and treatment with radiation. Few qualitative studies have assessed the chronic impact of NIS on everyday life. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the lived experience of chronic NIS burden on HNC survivors. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: Semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 31 HNC survivors to address the resear

Agreement in Infant Growth Indicators and Overweight/Obesity between Community and Clinical Care Settings.

BACKGROUND: Infants from low-income backgrounds receive nutrition care from both community and clinical care settings. However, mothers accessing these services have reported receiving conflicting messages related to infant growth between settings, although this has not been examined quantitatively. OBJECTIVE: Describe the agreement in infant growth assessments between community (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) and clinical (primary care providers) care settings. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, secondary data analysis of infant growth measures abstracted f

Dietary Patterns and the Risk of Dyslipidemia in Korean Adults: A Prospective Cohort Study Based on the Health Examinees (HEXA) Study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying dietary patterns that contribute to dyslipidemia development can inform prevention, nutritional counseling, and other treatment recommendations. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify major dietary patterns and examine the association between these dietary patterns and dyslipidemia incidence by sex among Koreans. DESIGN: The Health Examinees (HEXA) study is a community-based prospective cohort study. The baseline and follow-up surveys were conducted in 2004-2013, and 2012-2016, respectively, at 38 health examination centers and training hospitals located in eight reg

The Influence of Mindful Eating and/or Intuitive Eating Approaches on Dietary Intake: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Stimuli that promote eating in the absence of the physiological need for food are pervasive and can facilitate excessive energy intake. The practices of mindful eating (ME) and intuitive eating (IE) have been developed to minimize external drivers of energy intake by helping individuals emphasize the sensory properties of foods and internal indicators of hunger and fullness. OBJECTIVE: To enhance understanding about the effect of ME and IE interventions on dietary intake, this systematic review included randomized trials of ME and IE interventions that examined dietary intake, def

Influence of Social Inequalities on Dietary Diversity and Household Food Insecurity: An In-Depth Nutrition Baseline Survey Conducted in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Home to a significant proportion of the world's population, India is one of the hardest hit countries when it comes to malnutrition. While the magnitude of malnutrition in India is vast, it is also unevenly spread due to inequalities of the social, political, and economic situation. As part of the special initiative of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), "One World - No Hunger," GIZ is implementing a Global Program on "Food and Nutrition Security, Enhanced Resilience" (FaNS) in 12 countries, including India. The GIZ FaNS program, in agreement with the Department

Intake of Lycopene and other Carotenoids and Incidence of Uterine Leiomyomata: A Prospective Ultrasound Study.

BACKGROUND: Uterine leiomyomata (UL) are the leading indication for hysterectomy in the United States. Dietary supplementation with lycopene was associated with reduced size and incidence of oviduct leiomyoma in the Japanese quail. Two US prospective cohort studies of women reported little association between intake of lycopene, or other carotenoids, and UL incidence. However, these studies relied on self-reported physician-diagnosed UL, which is prone to misclassification. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the association between dietary intake of carotenoids and UL incidence. DESIGN: Data wer

Nutritional Deficiency Disease Secondary to ARFID Symptoms Associated with Autism and the Broad Autism Phenotype: A Qualitative Systematic Review of Case Reports and Case Series.

BACKGROUND: The demographics, weight statuses, and dietary patterns of people with autism or the broad autism phenotype who experience a severe nutrient deficiency disease due to symptoms of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder have not been well established. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this review was to examine the relationship between the demographics, weight statuses, dietary patterns, and nutrient deficiency diseases that characterize the most severe manifestations of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder symptomology associated with autism or the broad autism phenotype.
