The prevalence of pathologic skin picking in US adults.

OBJECTIVE: Despite increasing recognition of the potentially severe medical and psychosocial costs of pathologic skin picking (PSP), no large-sample, randomized investigation of its prevalence in a national population has been conducted. METHOD: Two thousand five hundred and thirteen US adults were interviewed during the spring and summer of 2004 in a random-sample, national household computer-assisted phone survey of PSP phenomenology and associated functional impairment. Respondents were classified for subsequent analysis according to proposed diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: Of all responden

Long-term follow-up of impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Recent studies have linked dopamine agonist (DA) usage with the development of impulse control disorders (ICDs) in Parkinson's disease (PD). Little is known about optimal management strategies or the long-term outcomes of affected patients. To report on the clinical interventions and long-term outcomes of PD patients who developed an ICD after DA initiation. Subjects contacted by telephone for a follow-up interview after a mean time period of 29.2 months. They were administered a modified Minnesota Impulse Disorder Interview for compulsive buying, gambling, and sexuality, and also self-rated c

Replication of low-risk gambling limits using canadian provincial gambling prevalence data.

A set of low-risk gambling limits were recently produced using Canadian epidemiological data on the intensity of gambling behavior and related consequences (Currie et al. Addiction 101:570-580, 2006). The empirically derived limits (gambling no more than two to three times per month, spending no more than $501-$100o CAN per year or no more than 1% of gross income spent on gambling) accurately predicted risk of gambling-related harm after controlling for other risk factors. The present study sought to replicate these limits on data collected in three independently conducted Canadian provincial

Sex differences in the relationship between white matter microstructure and impulsivity in adolescents.

Rapid maturational brain changes occur during adolescence--a time associated with risk-taking behaviors and improvements in cognition. The present study examined the relationship between white matter (WM) microstructure, impulsive behavior and response inhibition in female and male adolescents. Twenty-one healthy adolescents underwent diffusion tensor imaging using a 3.0-T magnetic resonance imaging system. Impulse control was assessed using the Bar-On Emotional Quotient Inventory, Youth Version. Response inhibition was assessed using the Stroop Color-Word Interference Test. Fractional anisotr

Impulse control disorders in eating disorders: clinical and therapeutic implications.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have explored impulse control disorders (ICDs) in women with bulimia nervosa (BN). We explored the prevalence of lifetime ICDs in women with BN, compared the severity of eating disorder symptoms in women with BN with and without ICD, and compared their personality profiles to females with one form of ICD, namely, pathologic gambling. METHOD: A total sample of 269 female patients consecutively admitted to our unit participated in the current study (173 BN without comorbid ICD [BN - ICD]; 54 BN with comorbid ICD [BN + ICD]; and 42 pathologic gamblers [PG]). All participan

Oxcarbazepine in patients with impulsive aggression: a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Impulsive aggression is a common clinically significant symptom, but there are few controlled studies evaluating drug treatment. This study evaluated oxcarbazepine in patients with impulsive aggression and whether diagnosis or other baseline characteristics predict response. METHOD: Eligible outpatients had clinically significant impulsive aggression, without other psychiatric symptoms clearly requiring treatment. Patients were randomized to oxcarbazepine or placebo, double-blind, for 10 weeks, at a variable dose increasing to 1200 mg/d if tolerated and to 2400 mg/d if aggression p

Oniomania--successful treatment with fluvoxamine and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy.

Compulsive buying (oniomania) is a disorder that has begun to receive attention from researchers in recent years. It has been estimated that disorder affects from 2 to 8% of the general adult population in the US (official data for Croatia are not available). About 90% of those affected are female. Onset occurs in the late teens or early twenties, and the disorder is generally chronic. Psychiatric comorbidity is frequent, particularly mood, anxiety, substance use, eating and personality disorders. Treatment has not been well delineated, but individual and group psychodynamic psychotherapy, cog

An open naltrexone treatment study in pathological gambling disorder.

The present study was designed to test the short-term efficacy and safety of naltrexone in the treatment of pathological gambling disorder. Seventeen subjects (seven men, 10 women) who fulfilled DSM-IV criteria for pathological gambling disorder, and were free from other Axis I diagnoses by Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R screening, participated in a 6-week open naltrexone flexible dose trial. Gambling symptom change was assessed with the patient-rated Clinical Global Impression (CGI) Scale, the clinician-rated CGI and the Gambling Symptom Assessment Scale. Side-effects were monito

Dynamics of impulsive-compulsive behaviors in early Parkinson's disease: a prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Impulsive compulsive behaviors (ICBs) in Parkinson's disease (PD) are debilitating disorders of repetitive, excessive, and compulsive nature affecting up to one third of PD patients. Objectives are to address clinical, psychiatric, and cognitive characteristics of ICBs and to define risk factors in PD patients in the initial motor stage, followed up for 5 years. METHODS: We analyzed 106 consecutive PD outpatients at Hoehn and Yahr disease stage 1 and 125 healthy controls. The participants were assessed for the presence of any ICB using the current clinical criteria and underwent

Increased prevalence of impulse control disorder symptoms in endocrine diseases treated with dopamine agonists: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) have been described as a side effect of dopamine agonists (DAs) in neurological as well as endocrine conditions. Few studies have evaluated the neuropsychological effect of DAs in hyperprolactinemic patients, and these have reported a relationship between DAs and ICDs. Our objective was to screen for ICD symptoms in individuals with DA-treated endocrine conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 132 patients with pituitary disorders treated with DAs (DA exposed), as well as 58 patients with pituitary disorders

Genome-Wide DNA Methylation Changes Associated with Intermittent Explosive Disorder: A Gene-Based Functional Enrichment Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent explosive disorder is defined as a recurrent, problematic, and impulsive aggression that affects 3% to 4% of the US population. While behavioral genetic studies report a substantial degree of genetic influence on aggression and impulsivity, epigenetic mechanisms underlying aggression and intermittent explosive disorder are not well known. METHODS: The sample included 44 subjects (22 with a DSM-5 diagnosis of intermittent explosive disorder and 22 comparable subjects without intermittent explosive disorder). Peripheral blood DNA methylome was profiled using the Illumin

A randomized controlled trial of a novel self-help technique for impulse control disorders: a study on nail-biting.

Nail-biting is currently classified as an impulse control disorder not otherwise specified. Although seldom targeted as a primary symptom, nail-biting is often associated with somatic complications and decreased quality of life. The present study assessed the effectiveness of an innovative self-help technique, titled decoupling (DC). DC aims at attenuating pathological nail-biting by performing motor sequences that decouple and rearrange the behavioral elements involved in the habit. A total of 72 participants with excessive nail-biting were recruited via specialized self-help forums and were

Gambling disorders.

Gambling disorders, including pathological gambling and problem gambling, have received increased attention from clinicians and researchers over the past three decades since gambling opportunities have expanded around the world. This Seminar reviews prevalence, causes and associated features, screening and diagnosis, and treatment approaches. Gambling disorders affect 0·2-5·3% of adults worldwide, although measurement and prevalence varies according to the screening instruments and methods used, and availability and accessibility of gambling opportunities. Several distinct treatment approaches

Noradrenergic function in pathological gambling: blunted growth hormone response to clonidine.

The noradrenergic system has been linked to impulsive behaviour in animals and humans, yet little data on noradrenergic system exist in specific impulse control disorders. To explore the role of the noradrenergic system in pathological gamblers (PG), we assessed neuroendocrine growth hormone (GH) response to the alpha2-adrenergic receptor agonist clonidine and placebo in PG and controls. The net effects of clonidine are a decrease in neurotransmission by depressing locus coeruleus activity and stimulation of GH secretion through activation of post-synaptic alpha2-adrenergic receptors in the hy

The cumulative effects of acute alcohol consumption, individual differences and situational perceptions on sexual decision making.

OBJECTIVE: Past alcohol administration research has produced mixed findings regarding the role of acute alcohol consumption on sexual decision making. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a more complex theoretical model that places alcohol's acute effects in context, through the inclusion of background measures as well as affective and cognitive responses to the specific situation. METHOD: College students (90 men, 90 women) completed a survey that included measures of individual difference characteristics and past experiences; approximately 1 month later, they participated in an alcoho

Effects of nicotine deprivation on craving response covariation in smokers.

Most models of craving propose that when cravings are strong, diverse responses--thought to index an underlying craving state--covary. Previous studies provided weak support for this hypothesis. The authors tested whether nicotine deprivation affects degree of covariation across multiple measures related to craving. Heavy and light smokers (N = 127) were exposed to smoking cues while either nicotine deprived or nondeprived. Measures included urge ratings, affective valence, a behavioral choice task assessing perceived reinforcement value of smoking, and smoking-related judgment tasks. Results

[Intrafamilial disruptive behaviour disorders in children and adolescents: Present data and treatment prospects].

Child-to-parent violence is a form of family violence that is still a well-kept secret. Abused parents can be victims of different types of abuse. Children can use both physical and psychological violence such as financial threats to take control of the home. In this situation, parents often no longer dare to contradict their children by fear of triggering uncontrollable violence. Although the phenomenon recently drew the attention of the media, there is still little knowledge about its prevalence and clinical characteristics. Most families remain isolated for a long time and, even in case of

Typology of patients with behavioral addictions or eating disorders during a one-year period of care: Exploring similarities of trajectory using growth mixture modeling coupled with latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Addictions are not restricted to substance-use disorders, and it is now widely recognized that they also include behavioral addictions. Certain individuals with eating disorders also experiment their disorder as an addiction. The objective was to identify typologies of patients presenting with various behavioral addictions or eating disorders according to their evolution within the framework of care, and to specify the factors associated with the differential clinical trajectories. METHODS: We included 302 patients presenting with problem gambling, sexual addiction, compulsive buy

Characteristics and correlates of stealing in college students.

BACKGROUND: Stealing is a fairly common behaviour among young adults. Understanding the potential associations and characteristics of individuals who steal may help educational institutions, health services and young people themselves resolve difficulties before the behaviour impacts on their academic performance and health. AIMS: We aim to test the hypothesis that desires to steal among students would be associated with worse academic achievements and higher rates of mood and impulse control disorders. METHODS: One thousand eight hundred and five students completed the College Student Compu

Post-concussion cognitive declines and symptomatology are not related to concussion biomechanics in high school football players.

Concussion is a major public health concern with nearly 4 million injuries occurring each year in the United States. In the acute post-injury stage, concussed individuals demonstrate cognitive function and motor control declines as well as reporting increased symptoms. Researchers have hypothesized that the severity of these impairments is related to impact magnitude. Using the Head Impact Telemetry System (HITS) to record head impact biomechanics, we sought to correlate pre- and post-concussive impact characteristics with declines in cognitive performance and increases in concussion-related s
