Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a zoonotic flavivirus that is transmitted by mosquitoes and vertebrate-amplifying hosts, including birds. Domestic ducks are susceptible to JEV infection and develop various levels of viremia. We tested the pathogenicities of seven JEV strains in newly hatched domestic ducklings. All inoculated ducklings showed stunted growth. Two JEV strains caused notable mortalities of 12.7% and 31.7%, respectively, highlighting that some emerged JEV strains may thus be pathogenic in newly hatched domestic ducklings.

We investigated the prevalence of IgG antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in 176 dogs from Havana Province and Mayabeque Province, Cuba, by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA). Domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST) is an increasingly recognized traumatic crime premised upon the control, abuse, and exploitation of youth. By definition, DMST is the "recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act" within domestic borders, in which the person is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident under the age of 18 years. The present study described the demographics, psychosocial features, and trafficking experiences (e.g., environments of recruitment, relationship to trafficker, solicitation) of DMST victims.

Myiasis caused by Hypodermatinae flies is an economically important disease affecting domesticated and wild ruminants in countries of the Mediterranean and Indian subcontinent. The adult flies have a short life span of 1 week, and they spread disease by laying their eggs on the coat of animals. Hypoderma spp. primarily lay their eggs on cattle, buffalo, roe deer, red deer and reindeer, while Przhevalskiana spp. lay eggs on the coat of goats. In this study, a mixed microalgal culture grown in secondarily treated domestic wastewater effluent was investigated for biodiesel production using in situ transesterification method with conventional heating. The total lipid content of the mixed culture was found as 26.2% ± 0.6 by weight of dry biomass, and 74% of the lipids were contributed by total glycerides. In situ transesterification with conventional heating process under acidic conditions produced higher biodiesel yield with chloroform as the co-solvent (82.1% ± 3.9) compared to hexane (55.3% ± 3.9) under the same reaction conditions.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical characteristics of patients referred for domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST) to improve identification and intervention.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: The Lawrence A. Aubin, Sr Child Protection Center at Hasbro Children's Hospital where patients are evaluated by child abuse pediatricians in outpatient, emergency department, and inpatient settings.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 41 patients younger than the age of 18 years referred for the evaluation of DMST involvement between August 1, 2013 and March 30, 2015.
