The majority of the literature contains outcomes of paediatric otoplasty with multiple surgeons' outcomes. However, to date, a single surgeon's case series numbering over 1000 adult cases in the same center has not been published. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether or not the bacterial DNA which was detected by PCR comes from viable bacteria.
METHOD: Observing the affection of middle ear effusion (MEE) on DNA viscosity and enzymatic digestion of DNA.
RESULT: The middle ear effusion and DNA are stable and DNase 1 rapidly digests DNA. The effusion does not seem to degrade DNA. The middle ear effusion signficantly inhibits DNase 1.

Membranous labyrinth antigen of guinea pigs was prepared. The sera of 33 patients with inner ear disorders of unknown etiology were examined by immunoblotting assay. The autoantibodies against inner ear antigen were found in patient's sera (30.3%). This indicated that the autoimmune activity may play a role in the development of some cases of these diseases. The detection of autoantibodies to inner ear antigen will be of great value to further study on the action of autoimmunological factor contributing to inner ear disorders of unknown etiology.
