The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the burden of maternal and neonatal disorders: A counterfactual modeling based on the global burden of disease study (2021).

OBJECTIVES: During the COVID-19 pandemic, global health systems faced unprecedented challenges, as well as in maternal and neonatal health, thus this study aims to clarify the impacts of COVID-19 on maternal and neonatal disorders (MNDs), regional variations, and the role of economic support. METHODS: We have developed a counterfactual model integrating Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average and Long Short-Term Memory models to forecast the burden of MNDs from 2020 To et al., 2021, which was compared with the actual burden to quantify the specific impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on MNDs. The health and educational costs of preterm birth to 18 years of age in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is the greatest cause of death up to five years of age and an important contributor to lifelong disability. There is increasing evidence that a meaningful proportion of early births may be prevented, but widespread introduction of effective preventive strategies will require financial support. AIMS: This study estimated the economic cost to the Australian government of preterm birth, up to 18 years of age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A decision-analytic model was developed to estimate the costs of preterm birth in Australia for a hypothetical cohort of 314 814 children,

Pathological gambling in Parkinson's disease: subthalamic oscillations during economics decisions.

Pathological gambling develops in up to 8% of patients with Parkinson's disease. Although the pathophysiology of gambling remains unclear, several findings argue for a dysfunction in the basal ganglia circuits. To clarify the role of the subthalamic nucleus in pathological gambling, we studied its activity during economics decisions. We analyzed local field potentials recorded from deep brain stimulation electrodes in the subthalamic nucleus while parkinsonian patients with (n = 8) and without (n = 9) pathological gambling engaged in an economics decision-making task comprising conflictual tri

Economic inequality and undernutrition in women: multilevel analysis of individual, household, and community levels in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Many people in developing countries are still struggling to emerge from the realm of extreme poverty, where economic improvements tend to benefit a small, affluent group of the population and cause growing inequality in health and nutrition that affects the most vulnerable groups of the population, including women and children. OBJECTIVE: To examine how household and community economic inequality affects nutritional status in women using information on 6,922 nonpregnant women aged 15 to 49 years included in the 2000 Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey. METHODS: Nutritional sta

Socio-economic assessment of dog population management systems: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Dog Population Management (DPM) systems primarily aim to reduce the free-roaming dog population, improve the health and welfare of humans and dogs, and foster their peaceful coexistence. A key challenge to resource allocation and evidence-based policy making in DPM is the rare evaluation of the associated socio-economic impacts. This scoping review identifies, maps, and summarizes published parameters and methods on the socio-economic aspect of DPM systems. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, and with a protocol registered on the Open Science Framework, this review explore

[Coupled SD-PLUS Model for Land Use Change and Multi-scenario Dynamic Simulation in Shandong Province].

Multi-scenario simulation of land use can provide theoretical support for regional land space optimization and resource allocation. Based on the land use data of Shandong Province in 2000, 2010, and 2020, combined with 13 driving factors, four constraint scenarios of inertial development, cultivated land protection, ecological protection, and economic development were established. The land use change trend and driving mechanism of Shandong Province in 2030 were predicted and analyzed by the coupling system dynamics (SD) model and patch-level land use change simulation (PLUS) model. The results…

The Michigan infant mental health home visiting model.

Selma Fraiberg's pioneering work with infants, toddlers, and families over 40 years ago led to the development of a field in which professionals from multiple disciplines learned to work with or on behalf of infants, very young children, their parents, and the relationships that bind them together. The intent was to promote social and emotional health through enhancing the security of early developing parent-child relationships in the first years of life (Fraiberg, 2018). Called infant mental health (IMH), practitioners from fields of health, education, social work, psychology, human developme

Identification of anisomycin, prodigiosin and obatoclax as compounds with broad-spectrum anti-parasitic activity.

Parasitic infections are a major source of human suffering, mortality, and economic loss, but drug development for these diseases has been stymied by the significant expense involved in bringing a drug though clinical trials and to market. Identification of single compounds active against multiple parasitic pathogens could improve the economic incentives for drug development as well as simplifying treatment regimens. We recently performed a screen of repurposed compounds against the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica, causative agent of amebic dysentery, and identified four compounds (an

Weak and fragile state-related terrorism and entrepreneurialism.

Terrorist groups resident in weak states are comprised of tribal-like entities conducting numerous attacks against persons and property in developing or struggling regions of the world where socio-economic conditions and governmental controls are problematic. To better understand the environmental conditions and potential impacts that such attacks have on business interests, this paper examines terrorist attack data from 2018. The study utilises a correlative analysis of relationship strengths between predictor variables commonly associated with weak and fragile states experiencing a high volu

Race differences in life satisfaction among aged men and women.

The purpose of this study was to attempt to explain why race differences emerge in examinations of life satisfaction among older adults retired from the work force. A conceptual model was developed and tested with data provided by 1,156 older Black and White individuals. The findings from this nationwide survey reveal that older Blacks have lower levels of life satisfaction than elderly Whites and that these differences may be attributed to the interplay between past aspirations and plans (as reflected by educational attainment and economic retirement plans) and present financial circumstances

Nutrition transition in west Sumatra, Indonesia.

Indonesia, like many developing countries, is experiencing a rapid urbanisation characterised by double burden of disease in which non communicable diseases become more prevalent while infectious diseases remain undefeated. This report describes the nutrition transition which occurred to Indonesia after economic transformation in 1966, based on information gathered from published reports. The major sources of information used in this paper were: a) a series of Indonesian National Socio-Economic Surveys (SUSENAS) conducted regularly by Central Bureau of Statistics (which provided a coherent pic

Bovine babesiosis in the 21st century: advances in biology and functional genomics.

Bovine babesiosis caused by the protozoan parasite, Babesia bovis, remains a significant cause of avoidable economic losses to the livestock industry in many countries throughout the world. The molecular mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of severe disease in susceptible cattle are not well understood and the tools available to study the biology of the parasite, including technologies for genetic manipulation, have only recently been developed. Recent availability of multiple parasite genomes and bioinformatic tools, in combination with the development of new biological reagents, will f

Brucellosis: a worldwide zoonosis.

Brucella is one of the world's major zoonotic pathogens, and is responsible for enormous economic losses as well as considerable human morbidity in endemic areas. Control of brucellosis requires practical solutions that can be easily applied to the field. Rapid DNA-based diagnostic tests for both humans and livestock have now proved themselves on an experimental level. Data on the virulence of Brucella suggest common mechanisms shared with plant pathogens and endosymbionts of the alpha-proteobacteria. Understanding virulence will have practical repercussions in the realms of vaccine developmen

Developing industrial-governmental-academic partnerships to address micronutrient malnutrition.

Micronutrient malnutrition affects approximately 2 billion people and has a significant impact on mortality, morbidity, reproductive health, individual growth and development, and economic productivity. The World Bank has suggested that micronutrient interventions are among the most cost-effective of all health interventions. Therefore, greatly increased collaborative efforts are needed to bring about further reductions in micronutrient malnutrition. At the FAO/WHO International Conference on Nutrition, the importance of various partners in improving nutrition was recognized in the World Decla

Estimating the health and macroeconomic burdens of tuberculosis in India, 2021-2040: A fully integrated modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) imposes a substantial health and economic burden on many populations and countries, but lack of funding has significantly contributed to several countries falling short of global TB reduction targets. Furthermore, existing assessments of the economic impact of TB do not capture the impacts on productivity and economic growth or the pathways by which epidemiology, demography, and the economy interact. Evidence is needed to answer how investment in treatment and control measures may help to mitigate the twin Indian health and macroeconomic burdens of TB over the com

Macro level influences on strategic responses to the COVID-19 pandemic - an international survey and tool for national assessments.

BACKGROUND: Variation in the approaches taken to contain the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic at country level has been shaped by economic and political considerations, technical capacity, and assumptions about public behaviours. To address the limited application of learning from previous pandemics, this study aimed to analyse perceived facilitators and inhibitors during the pandemic and to inform the development of an assessment tool for pandemic response planning. METHODS: A cross-sectional electronic survey of health and non-health care professionals (5 May - 5 June 2020) in six languages,
