Talking about links between sexually transmitted infections and infertility with college and university students from SE England, UK: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea are largely symptomless diseases which, left untreated, can result in serious complications including infertility. Fertility problems currently affect approximately one in seven couples in the UK and there is increasing demand for couples seeking reproductive technologies. Young people are at greatest risk of contracting STIs, therefore this study aimed to identify young people's knowledge and beliefs about the link between untreated STIs and infertility. METHODS: Focus groups were conducted with participants

Clinicians with dyslexia: a systematic review of effects and strategies.

BACKGROUND: For educators, an awareness of the impact of dyslexia on learners in the clinical workplace is vital: first, to be able to identify whether dyslexia may underlie certain traits and behaviours; and second, to be able to provide appropriate advice and support when dyslexia is identified. We reviewed the primary research evidence concerning the effects of dyslexia on clinicians (in or after training) in the workplace, and adaptive strategies ('workarounds') that are presently in use. METHODS: A systematic search of literature was undertaken, followed by a narrative review of studies

Communication strategies for organ donation.

A country, state or hospital may have the latest medical technology and infrastructure as well as qualified professionals for organ transplantation, but unless there is an adequate donor population the waiting lists for transplants will continue to be long and for some patients, hopeless. Public and professional awareness programmes are key factor in the donation process. Social education that explains the life-saving benefits of organ transplantation, the enormous need for organ donation, the concept of brain death and religious teachings related to these issues is vital for creating a conduc

Reproductive health in central and eastern Europe: priorities and needs.

The countries in Central and Eastern Europe combine induced abortion as the method of choice for family planning with low contraceptive use (Hungary and Slovenia excepted). This widespread use of induced abortion has a negative influence on reproductive and general public health, and an effort should be made to introduce modern, effective family planning. Both information, education and communication (IEC) programmes (for the users) and training in contraceptive technology and counselling (for the providers) is badly needed, as well as a continuing supply of contraceptives. In order to design

Simulation in pediatric anesthesiology.

Simulation-based training, research and quality initiatives are expanding in pediatric anesthesiology just as in other medical specialties. Various modalities are available, from task trainers to standardized patients, and from computer-based simulations to mannequins. Computer-controlled mannequins can simulate pediatric vital signs with reasonable reliability; however the fidelity of skin temperature and color change, airway reflexes and breath and heart sounds remains rudimentary. Current pediatric mannequins are utilized in simulation centers, throughout hospitals in-situ, at national meet
