UNLABELLED: Hepatic abscesses in childhood are rarely observed in Europe. The aim of this word was to study how to diagnose and how to treat an hepatic abscess.
METHODS: Between 1985 and 2003, we recensed retrospectively 33 cases of hepatic abscesses hospitalised in the paediatric unit of Noumea.
RESULTS: Children were mainly melanesians (79%), 7 years old on average, having abdominal pains, a clinical and biological infectious syndrome, and abscesses images on ultrasonography or computed tomography. The identified micro-organisms included Entamoeba histolytica in 30% (10 cases); Staphylococ…

The microaerophilic parasites Entamoeba histolytica, Trichomonas vaginalis, and Giardia lamblia jointly cause hundreds of millions of infections in humans every year. Other microaerophilic parasites such as Tritrichomonas foetus and Spironucleus spp. pose a relevant health problem in veterinary medicine. Unfortunately, vaccines against these pathogens are unavailable, but their microaerophilic lifestyle opens opportunities for specifically developed chemotherapeutics. In particular, their high sensitivity towards oxygen can be exploited by targeting redox enzymes. This review focusses on the r…

Captive primates are susceptible to gastrointestinal (GIT) parasitic infections, which are often zoonotic and can contribute to morbidity and mortality. Fecal samples were examined by the means of direct smear, fecal flotation, fecal sedimentation, and fecal cultures. Of 26.51% (317/1196) of the captive primates were diagnosed gastrointestinal parasitic infections. Trichuris spp. were the most predominant in the primates, while Entamoeba spp. were the most prevalent in Old World monkeys (P < 0.05). These preliminary data will improve the management of captive primates and the safety of animal …

Amoebiasis is a disease of parasitic origin responsible for dysentery and extra-intestinal complications. The infection is by Entamoeba histolytica, an amoeba whose geographical distribution is cosmopolitan, but that is more prevalent in tropical areas. Only a few infections are symptomatic and some of them may cause extra-intestinal complications. Hepatic amoebiasis is the most frequently observed. We report the case of a Belgian woman who developed an amoebic liver abscess after returning from a trip to India. The diagnosis was confirmed by PCR detection of E. histolytica DNA performed on th…

Out of 1261 stool specimens collected from children in Dohuk city, northern Iraq, the prevalence of Giardia lamblia infection was 38.5%. The highest rate of infection was in orphan care centres (48.1%) and the lowest in the paediatric hospital (31.3%). The age group 10-12 years had the highest rate (81.2%) and 7-9 years the lowest (22.9%); boys had a higher rate than girls. Some infected samples (70/486) showed double or triple infections and G. lamblia was combined with Hymenolepis nana, Blastocystis hominis, Entamoeba histolytica and Iodamoeba buetschlii.

A 66-year-old Dutchman, living in Mali, presented with an extensive progressive perianal ulcer despite local and antibiotic treatment. Microscopic examination of the stool revealed Entamoeba histolytica/dispar cysts and phagocytosing trophozoites were seen in fresh scrapings of the ulcer, a diagnostic feature of infection with E. histolytica. The diagnosis was cutaneous amoebiasis and the patient was effectively treated with metronidazole and local debridements. Primary cutaneous amoebiasis is a rare disease. Diagnosis and treatment are relatively simple but lack of familiarity with the diseas…

Pulmonary amoebiasis without liver involvement occurs sporadically as a result of haematogenous spread from a primary site, the colon. The case history is presented of a patient who developed superior vena cava syndrome due to a pulmonary amoebic abscess without liver involvement. He was initially suspected of having a neoplasm but a combination of tests including histological examination of the H&E stained excised tissue, immunofluorescence using anti-Entamoeba histolytica antibodies, and serology confirmed the diagnosis of amoebiasis. To our knowledge this is the first description of pulmona…

Amebic liver abscesses are unusual among neonates. Three (3.6%) of 83 children who presented to a university hospital with amebic liver abscesses in a 17-year period were neonates (<28 days of age). Patients presented with nonspecific clinical and laboratory findings mimicking fulminant neonatal sepsis. Diagnosis was delayed and was based on the presence of a hypoechoic lesion in the liver, antibodies against Entamoeba histolytica and microbiologic examination of pus. In addition to parenteral metronidazole treatment and early ultrasound-guided aspiration of the abscess, intensive care is vita…

In the present work, it was demonstrated that in amoebic dysentery and amoebic liver abscess patients, the secretory response is long-lasting (> 12 months); and 50% of amoebic dysentery patients developed circulating antiamoebic IgG in comparison with 100% of amoebic liver abscess individuals. A total of 83% of these individuals developed high levels of serum anti-Entamoeba histolytica IgA. However, only 10.4% of the dysentery patients showed this anti-E. histolytica antibody isotype in serum. There was no correlation between secretory and serum antiamoebic response, suggesting independent ind…

Although the intestinal amebae that infect humans are not thought of as classic agents of food-borne disease, food plays an important role in the transmission of these protozoa. This is particularly true for areas of the world where the organisms are endemic. Transmission of most intestinal protozoa occurs by the fecal-oral route via contaminated food or water. Among the four genera of amebae that infect man, only Entamoeba histolytica and Blastocystis hominis are causes of disease. This article focuses on E. histolytica because of the organism's medical and economic impact on humans. In addit…

Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium parvum, Isospora belli, Balantidium coli, and Microsporidia spp. are cosmopolitan parasites. They often cause diarrheal diseases. The waterborn transmission of all these parasites is possible (41). Surface water supplies used for drinking water are potential sources of contamination. Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium spp. have received great attention in industrialized countries during the last years because they are the etiological agents of waterborne diseases. The life cycles of Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium are described with …

Entamoeba histolytica, the premier intestinal protozoan, has traversed time in its relentless quest for survival in its dichotomous role of parasite and pathogen. Enigmatic in its transition from human intestinal commensal to invader of human tissue, diverse in its pathogenicity for the human host, and intricate in its bacterial interrelationship in the bowel, E. histolytica has become the focal point of intensive investigation in its basic biology underscoring human pathogenicity. This review will focus on facets of cell biology, pathophysiology, clinical, therapeutic, and epidemiologic, corr…

Amoebiasis is a widespread disease with high prevalence in tropical countries and environments with poor sanitation. The treatment of either intestinal and extra-intestinal localization of Entamoeba histolytica or encephalic lesions sustained by Acanthamoeba and Naegleria has been the object of a wealth of research. Antibiotics played a dominant role in this field. Their antiamebic activity is due either to direct action on the protozoan and/or inhibition of symbiotic bacterial flora. Presently they still are an important component of the therapeutic armamentarium but they are supplanted as dr…

The parasympathetic nervous system has a crucial role in immunomodulation of the vagus nerve, its structure provides a pathogen detection system, and a negative feedback to the immune system after the pathogenic agent has been eliminated. Amebiasis is a disease caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica, considered the third leading cause of death in the world. The rats are used as a natural resistance model to amoebic liver infection. The aim of this study is to analyze the interaction of Entamoeba histolytica with neutrophils, macrophages, and NK cells in livers of intact and vag…
