An analytical model of ovine fascioliasis is described. The model describes the essential features of the epidemiological patterns observed in the field and is used to assess the impact of a series of discrete doses of anthelmintic on the prevalence and intensity of infection in the flock. The reduction in prevalence after treatment with anthelmintics is shown to be critically dependent on the distribution of flukes amongst the ewes. The model is further used to define the optimum dosing times for a 2- or 3-dose regime. Model predictions concerning the optimum regime are in accord with usual t

Over the past 20 years, major progress has been made in our understanding of critical aspects of rabies epidemiology and control. This paper presents results of recent research, highlighting methodological advances that have been applied to burden of disease studies, rabies epidemiological modelling and rabies surveillance. These results contribute new insights and understanding with regard to the epidemiology of rabies and help to counteract misperceptions that currently hamper rabies control efforts in Africa. The conclusion of these analyses is that the elimination of canine rabies in Afric

An essential part of toxicologic research involves assessing the risk from exposure to chemicals, drugs, or other potentially harmful substances. Epidemiologic information establishes an association but not a causal relationship between risk factors and adverse health outcomes. Controlled experiments in laboratory animals, however, provide insight into the agent-outcome relationship and aid in establishing low-risk exposure levels for humans. This is especially true in studies of reproduction and development since epidemiologic data are often limited. While controlled experiments reduce certai

Mathematical models play a crucial role in assisting public health authorities in timely disease control decision-making. For vector-borne diseases, integrating host and vector dynamics into models can be highly complex, particularly due to limited data availability, making system validation challenging. In this study, two compartmental models akin to the SIR type were developed to characterize vector-borne infectious disease dynamics. Motivated by dengue fever epidemiology, the models varied in their treatment of vector dynamics, one with implicit vector dynamics and the other explicitly mode

In South America, yellow fever (YF) is an established infectious disease that has been identified outside of its traditional endemic areas, affecting human and nonhuman primate (NHP) populations. In the epidemics that occurred in Argentina between 2007-2009, several outbreaks affecting humans and howler monkeys (Alouatta spp) were reported, highlighting the importance of this disease in the context of conservation medicine and public health policies. Considering the lack of information about YF dynamics in New World NHP, our main goal was to apply modelling tools to better understand YF transm

Measurements from central site (CS) monitors are often used as estimates of exposure in air pollution epidemiological studies. As these measurements are typically limited in their spatiotemporal resolution, true exposure variability within a population is often obscured, leading to potential measurement errors. To fully examine this limitation, we developed a set of alternative daily exposure metrics for each of the 169 ZIP codes in the Atlanta, GA, metropolitan area, from 1999 to 2002, for PM(2.5) and its components (elemental carbon (EC), SO(4)), O(3), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxid

As one of the major public health challenges globally, tuberculosis requires epidemiological research for its control and prevention. With the advent of the big data era, machine learning has advantages over traditional methods in handling complex, high-dimensional datasets and providing accurate predictive results. This paper introduces the application of machine learning in the discovery and diagnosis of tuberculosis cases, risk factor analysis, predictive modeling, and evaluation of intervention strategies, providing new means for more in-depth exploration of the value in tuberculosis epide

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) shows divergent epidemiological trends in China and the United States, necessitating country-specific forecasting approaches. This study compares IBD burden between both countries from 1990 to 2023 and projects future trends to 2050 using a multi-algorithm forecasting framework.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023 (GBD 2023) for IBD incidence, prevalence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Joinpoint regression was used to characterize temporal trends, and the intrinsic estimator method was appl

BACKGROUND: Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) is an age-associated condition common in the elderly that arises when hematopoietic stem cells acquire somatic mutations in an assortment of genes, most commonly DNMT3A, TET2, ASXL1, PPM1D, and JAK2. CH is associated with increased coronary artery disease and all-cause mortality. Epidemiological studies have revealed that different CH driver mutations are associated with unique outcomes. PPM1D CH is more prevalent in patients following radiation and cytotoxic therapy. PPM1D CH has been strongly associated with coronary artery disease, peripheral artery dis

Falling in the elderly is an important social issue, especially for those who are in long-term care (LTC) facilities, in addition to being a significant economic burden. This study aims to investigate the epidemiological characteristics and identify the factors influencing falls in LTC residents. We enrolled 260 participants aged 60+ years by multistage sampling across 13 LTC facilities in Xiamen, China, in 2016. Epidemiological characteristics and falls were observed and recorded during a 12-month period using a revised FROP-Com Scale. Multiple logistic regression modeling was performed to det

There is increasing interest in and evidence for altered immune factors in the etiology and pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Stimulated by various epidemiological findings reporting elevated risk of schizophrenia following prenatal exposure to infection, one line of current research aims to explore the potential contribution of immune-mediated disruption of early brain development in the precipitation of long-term psychotic disease. Since the initial formulation of the "prenatal cytokine hypothesis" more than a decade ago, extensive epidemiological research and remarkable advances in modeling

Despite being considered an invasive ungulate outside its native range (North Africa), little information exists regarding the role of the aoudad (also called Barbary sheep, Ammotragus lervia) as a pathogen reservoir. Furthermore, in most epidemiological surveys the potential role of coinfections (e.g. a first infection may make the host more immuno-competent or susceptible against a second pathogen) as a risk factor is often neglected. In this study we first performed a serological survey for selected pathogens (Mycobacterium bovis, M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis, Chlamydophila abortus, bov

In order to project trends in mortality from 11 major cancer sites in Switzerland to the end of the current century, a log-linear Poisson age/period/cohort model with arbitrary constraints on the parameters was used, fitted to the observed rates for the period 1950-84. One projection was based on the assumption of a total absence of change in the effect of period, the second was based on a linear extrapolation of the logarithms of the seven known periods, and the third was related to a series of a priori external epidemiological hypotheses, whenever available. For instance, coefficients below

The rapid spread of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) poses a major challenge to global public health, yet current surveillance systems relying on sentinel hospitals and laboratory testing often lack timeliness and precision. In this study, we present an integrated framework combining wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) with machine learning to establish a fever prevalence-based early warning model for ARIs. Using wastewater data on paracetamol and ibuprofen consumption (n = 603) from Dalian, Beijing, Guangzhou, and other cities, we evaluated statistical, unsupervised, and supervised learnin

Mediation analysis is a powerful tool for elucidating the causal mechanisms by which exposures influence outcomes through mediators. However, conventional approaches often yield biased estimates of mediation effects in scenarios involving high-dimensional exposures and high-dimensional mediators, alongside a small number of pervasive hidden confounders that simultaneously affect the exposures, mediators, and outcome or the exposures and outcome. To address these challenges, we propose a deconfounded-debiased method for estimation and inference in high-dimensional mediation analysis based on th
