Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease is associated with higher bone mineral density: results from NHANES.

UNLABELLED: We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to investigate the association between metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and bone mineral density (BMD) among U.S. adults. Our findings indicated that participants with MASLD had higher BMD than those without MASLD. INTRODUCTION: Given the stigma associated with the term "NAFLD," experts participating in a Delphi consensus proposed renaming the condition "MASLD". Nevertheless, the association between MASLD and BMD remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relat

A "preamputation care pathway" reduces mortality for lower limb amputation.

Lower limb amputation due to peripheral arterial disease is common. The comorbid nature of this patient group makes management challenging. The aims of the study were 1) to introduce a novel "preamputation care pathway" to facilitate perioperative care and 2) to evaluate whether such a pathway is able to reduce morbidity and mortality. All patients undergoing lower limb amputation over 12 months were prospectively identified. Patient demographics were recorded before statistical analysis was performed. Twelve limbs were amputated (mean age, 69 years; mean American Association of Anesthesiologi

Correlation analysis between PFNA insertion point and neck-shaft angle in intertrochanteric fractures, and selection of PFNA (240 mm) under varying radius of femoral curvature.

BACKGROUND: The Intramedullary fixation of unstable intertrochanteric fractures is usually performed using the proximal femoral nail anti-rotation (PFNA), but the problems of optimal insertion point of intramedullary nail and anterior cortical impingement have not been solved.Meanwhile, the variation of the femoral neck-shaft angle (NSA) may also result in the deviation of the PFNA's insertion point. The purpose of this study to determine the ideal intramedullary nail placement position in the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures through the three-dimensional (3D) models, and to investigat

Spontaneous recurrent dislocation after primary Birmingham hip resurfacing: a rare complication in a 44-year-old man.

Dislocation is a rare complication of hip resurfacing in young people. This is thought to be due to the stability imposed by a large-diameter head [Stulberg BN, Trier KK, Naughton M, et al. Results and Lessons Learned from a United States Hip Resurfacing Investigational Device Exemption Trial. J Bone Joint Surg Am 2008;90:21]. We report an isolated case 1 week post-Birmingham hip resurfacing in a 44-year-old man without any history of trauma or infection. We note that due to massive periacetabular and femoral neck osteophyte formation and loss of normal bony anatomical landmarks, the version o

The ratio between the screw distance and femoral neck width on lateral radiography is a reliable predictor of femoral head necrosis: a clinical review and corresponding numerical simulations.

BACKGROUND: Fixation instability serves as an initial trigger for femoral head necrosis in patients with femoral neck fractures undergoing internal fixation. The configuration of screw trajectories is critical in determining the stability of the fixation. Our previously published study indicates that abduction of screw trajectories may enhance postoperative angular stability. However, the effectiveness of a wider screw distribution on the sagittal plane in optimizing fixation stability and reducing the risk of femoral head necrosis remains uncertain. METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed

The Alpha Angle.

➢ The alpha angle was originally defined on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, using a plane, parallel to the axis of the femoral neck. However, much of the literature on the alpha angle has used radiographs or other imaging modalities to quantify the alpha angle.➢ The measurement of the alpha angle can be unreliable, particularly on radiographs and ultrasound.➢ If radiographs are used to measure the alpha angle, the circle of best-fit method should be used on multiple different views to capture various locations of the cam lesion, and "eyeballing" or estimating the alpha angle should be

Application of intelligent X-ray image analysis in risk assessment of osteoporotic fracture of femoral neck in the elderly.

The paper focuses on establishing a risk assessment model of femoral neck osteoporotic fracture (FNOF) in the elderly population and improving the screening efficiency and accuracy of such diseases in specific populations. In literature research, the main risk factors of femoral neck osteoporosis (FNOP) in the elderly were studied and analyzed; the femur region of interest (ROI) and the hard bone edge segmentation model were selected from the X-ray digital image by using the image depth learning method. On this basis, the femoral trabecular score and femoral neck strength (FNS) in the set regi

Changes in bone mineral density in Down syndrome individuals: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Data evaluating changes in bone mineral density (BMD) in Down syndrome (DS) individuals remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to better understand associations between BMD and DS. A systematic literature search of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library up until 1st January 2021 was conducted. We used the keywords "bone mineral density" and "Down Syndrome." Fifteen studies were included. Overall, our results showed a significant decrease in BMD of total body (TB BMD) [MD =  - 0.18; 95% CI (- 0.23 and - 0.12), P < 0.00001, I2 = 89%

The effect of bariatric surgery on gravitational loading and its impact on bone mass.

INTRODUCTION: Mechanical unloading associated with weight loss might be one of the main causes for bariatric surgery (BS) induced bone loss. However, no study has tested this hypothesis through objectively measured accelerometry-derived gravitational loading. We aimed to assess how gravitational loading changes following BS and how this correlates with bone mass losses. METHODS: Twenty-one patients submitted to gastric bypass were assessed before, 1, 6 and 12 months after BS for areal bone mineral density (BMD), calciotropic hormones, sclerostin, body composition and daily physical activity.
