Wrist arthroplasty for treatment of infected distal radius nonunion using free vascularised proximal fibular bone graft.

OBJECTIVE: Management of infected distal radius nonunion with a bone defect and radiocarpal and distal radio-ulnar joint arthritis is considered an orthopaedic challenge. Although several methods have been described but none provide a satisfactory solution. Free vascularised fibula bone graft constitutes a good option to eradicate the infection, correct the deformity, compensate for the shortening and maintain motion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 15 cases with infected distal radius nonunion associated with bone defects. Nine cases were males and six were females. The average age

A case of suicide by double gunshot wounds to the head: the ability to act after the first shot.

A single gunshot (or multiple) does (do) not necessarily lead to immediate loss of consciousness or rapid neurological deficits, so the victim may be able to repeatedly pull the trigger before achieving the lethal effect. Despite multiple gunshot wounds can lead to the suspicious participation of other person to the death of the victim, in the medico-legal literature suicides with multiple gunshot wounds are reported, demonstrating the ability of the victim to act after two or more gunshots. In this case, a 47-years-old man was found dead in a pool of blood in the kitchen of his house. Accordi

Drug Dealing and Gun Carrying go Hand in Hand: Examining How Juvenile Offenders' Gun Carrying Changes Before and After Drug Dealing Spells across 84 Months.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to examine whether periods of marijuana and other illicit drug dealing ("spells" of dealing) are associated with changes in young male offenders' gun carrying behavior. METHODS: This paper uses 84 months of data from a sample of 479 serious juvenile male offenders who were assessed every six months for three years and then annually for four years. At each assessment, participants reported on engagement in illicit behaviors, including drug dealing and gun carrying, in each month since the prior interview. We used fixed effects models to assess within-individual chan

Homicide victims and mechanisms in Lithuania from 2004 to 2016.

A retrospective analysis of 2000 intentional homicide cases from the State Forensic Medicine Service (Vilnius, Lithuania) was carried out in order to evaluate the portrait of homicide victims and mechanisms of death between 2004 and 2016. The definition of intentional homicide appears to be quite straightforward, as a homicide occurs when one person's cause of death can be attributed to another one. Moreover, homicide is accomplished by conscious, active, intentional, or unintentional activities or inaction. All included cases of homicide were qualified as intentional murder. Children rarely b

Suicide trends among persons aged 10-24 years--United States, 1994-2012.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among persons aged 10-24 years in the United States and accounted for 5,178 deaths in this age group in 2012. Firearm, suffocation (including hanging), and poisoning (including drug overdose) are the three most common mechanisms of suicide in the United States. Previous reports have noted that trends in suicide rates vary by mechanism and by age group in the United States, with increasing rates of suffocation suicides among young persons. To test whether this increase is continuing and to determine whether it varies by demographic subgroups among pe

An Epidemiological Analysis of Terrorism-Related Attacks in Eastern Europe from 1970 to 2019.

INTRODUCTION: Over the past five decades, Eastern Europe has seen relatively little in terms of terrorist attacks. The recent escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict has, however, placed a new spotlight on the region, and new questions and concerns around war, conflict, insurgency, and terrorism are being posed. The Russian invasion and extensive combat operations, the largest in Europe since World War II, are occurring across Ukraine where there are 15 active nuclear reactors, not including the Chernobyl site, that are vulnerable to attack or sabotage. In addition, Eastern Europe has been

Factors affecting mortality in traumatic diaphragm ruptures.

Traumatic diaphragm ruptures (TDR) are rarely seen. Although TDR does not cause morbidity in the acute period, undiagnosed TDR may cause clinical states, such as herniation, strangulation, pneumonia, pleural effusion, empyema, and cardiac tamponade, which have high morbidity and mortality rates in the late period. This study aims to evaluate the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment methods of TDR encountered in thoracoabdominal trauma and to identify the factors affecting mortality.
METHODS: A retrospective examination was carried out on the patients who were operat
