Obesity affects over one-third of U.S. adults and complicates the treatment of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bloodstream infections (BSI). A study at the University of Florida Health Centers compared clinical outcomes between 233 obese and non-obese patients receiving cefazolin for MSSA BSI. No significant differences were found in clinical success (81.9% vs 82.7%), mortality (7.2% vs 5.3%), or adverse events (3.6% vs 3.3%). However, obese patients took longer to clear blood cultures (4.62 vs 4.01 days, P = 0.017).

Between October 1964 and December 1985, six patients with primary squamous cell carcinoma of the subglottis were treated with radical radiation therapy at the University of Florida. The disease was staged as Tis (one patient), T2N0 (two patients), and T4N0 (three patients). Local control was achieved with irradiation in four patients (66%) who were observed for 3.5, 4, 4, and 5 years after radiation therapy. Two patients whose tumors recurred at the primary site underwent salvage laryngectomy, which was successful in one patient.

This study is among the first to extend and test social learning theory's ability to understand property and violent victimization. It specifically tests whether aspects of definitions, differential reinforcement, and differential association/modeling can explain the three types of victimization of gang members: actual experience, perception of likelihood, and fear. The sample consists of over 300 male and female gang members incarcerated in jails throughout Florida. The results show that all three types of victimization can be explained by the three aspects of social learning theory.

Hearing and/or balance disorders are symptoms that may be associated with tumors of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA). Between March 1988 and May 1995, 22 patients had diagnosis or evaluation of CPA tumors at Cleveland Clinic Florida. The most common presenting signs or symptoms included unilateral low-frequency tinnitus, unsteadiness, and/or asymmetric hearing loss. On the basis of our experience, we have constructed an algorithm to help identify and manage acoustic nerve dysfunction. We compare our findings with national epidemiologic data and current medical reports.

Tracheoesophageal fistula, with or without esophageal atresia (TEF/EA) appears to be a defect of blastogenesis, as is the oculoauriculovertebral (Goldenhar) spectrum (OAVS), with which it has occasionally been associated. We reviewed the records of all OAVS patients evaluated through the University of South Florida Regional Genetics Program between 1985 and 1993. Of 60 OAVS patients, three had TEF/EA. These results suggest that TEF/EA in association with OAVS is underreported. The occurrence of TEF/EA should prompt a thorough search for other known anomalies of OAVS.

Continent urinary reservoirs (CUR) have replaced ileum and colonic conducts as the best method for urinary diversion. The author present their experience with two patients in whom they fashioned a CUR in the Dr. Arnulfo Arias M. Metropolitan Complex using the ileocecal segment and part of the transverse colon (The Miami or Florida porch technique). They describe the clinical histories, surgical technique and the results obtained. They feel that the CUR has a large capacity, works at low pressure and is technically accessible. They consider it a good choice when urinary diversion is needed.

The Louisville Behavioral Checklist was administered to 23 white boys between the ages of 7 and 12 years who completed treatment for Perthes disease by bracing or surgery at the Florida Elks Children's Hospital. The groups were comparable, with 11 children in the surgery group and 12 in the bracing group. Results indicated statistically significant differences (p = 0.05) between the groups in three areas. Patients in the bracing group were more likely to demonstrate deficits in social, academic, and sexual behavior as compared with patients in the surgery group.
