Misplaced tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis: A case of foreign body aspiration.

Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a rare, but potentially fatal condition frequently seen in the emergency department. Bronchoscopy plays a major role in its diagnosis and treatment. In patients with laryngectomy, the strategies for airway maintenance and foreign body retrieval are limited. We describe management of a patient with laryngectomy presenting with aspiration of a tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis (TEP). The TEP was not initially seen in chest radiography; however, computed tomography showed it within the right lower bronchus. Successful extraction of the TEP was achieved through br

Endoscopic removal of an unusual foreign body in the sphenoid sinus: an oral implant.

AIM: Migration of oral implants displaced in the maxillary sinus toward the sphenoid sinus is an extremely rare event. This case report is focused on the possibility of treating such a rare complication by means of endoscopic treatment through the nasal cavity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 45-year-old female patient received one oral implant for the substitution of the left first upper molar, but during the surgical procedure the implant was displaced in the maxillary sinus. Owing to a delay in treatment, a spontaneous migration of the implant in the sphenoid sinus occurred. RESULTS: The implant

Neuropeptide Substance-P-Conjugated Chitosan Nanofibers as an Active Modulator of Stem Cell Recruiting.

The goal to successful wound healing is essentially to immobilize and recruit appropriate numbers of host stem or progenitor cells to the wound area. In this study, we developed a chitosan nanofiber-immobilized neuropeptide substance-P (SP), which mediates stem cell mobilization and migration, onto the surfaces of nanofibers using a peptide-coupling agent, and evaluated its biological effects on stem cells. The amount of immobilized SP on chitosan nanofibers was modulated over the range of 5.89 ± 3.27 to 75.29 ± 24.31 ng when reacted with 10 to 500 ng SP. In vitro migration assays showed that

[Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for migration of an orthopedic fixation wire in the mediastinum: report of a case].

Migration of an orthopedic fixation wire into the thoracic cavity is an uncommon complication. We present a 64-year-old male undergoing intra-thoracic migration of a Kirschner wire. The patient had undergone the treatment of sternoclavicular joint dislocation due to clavicular fracture. Four months after the operation, a chest X-ray revealed a metallic foreign body in the mediastinum. A chest computed tomography (CT) showed the object in the anterior mediastinum adjacent to the aortic arch. An emergency video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery was successfully performed to remove a 60-mm-long Kirs

[Percutaneous endovascular removal of temporary intraluminal shunt migrated during carotid endarterectomy].

Displacement of a temporary shunt during operations on the carotid arteries to various parts of the aorta and arteries of the lower extremities is an extremely rare complication, with only two reports encountered in the available literature. We herein describe a case of successful endovascular retrieval of a temporary intraluminal Flexcel™ shunt (LeMaitre Vascular, Inc.) having spontaneously migrated to the left common iliac artery during a left-sided carotid endarterectomy in a 69-year-old woman. CT with intravenous contrast enhancement of the abdominal cavity and lesser pelvis was used for t

Migration of wire mesh into the intestinal lumen causing an intestinal obstruction 30 years after repair of a ventral hernia.

Wire mesh repair of abdominal wall hernias was abandoned almost four decades ago. Recently, a woman who had a wire mesh repair of an incisional hernia in 1964 came to the emergency room with a complete small bowel obstruction. The obstruction was caused by a segment of wire mesh that broke off from the abdominal wall and migrated into the small bowel lumen. During the preceding 2 years, she had been evaluated by two different gastroenterologists for chronic anemia, but they failed to obtain an evaluation of the small intestine. This case report shows that abdominal foreign bodies may migrate i

Ultrasonographic features of a pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm secondary to a migrating intrathoracic grass awn in a dog: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm (PAP) is a rare but well-documented vascular abnormality in humans and can be life-threatening. In companion animals, data on PAP are scarce. While the clinical course and imaging features of migrating intrathoracic grass awns in dogs are well documented, they have not previously been associated with PAP. Lung ultrasonography (LUS) is increasingly used in veterinary medicine, with multiple sonographic patterns reported for pulmonary disease, including disorders caused by migrating grass awns. This report describes an unprecedented ultrasonographic ap

Intra-articular Migration of a Broken Needle in an Intravenous Drug User: A Case Report and Surgical Management.

Intravenous drug users (IVDUs) frequently present with complications; however, intra-articular migration of a broken needle is exceedingly rare. This is the case of a 29-year-old male heroin user who experienced needle breakage during self-injection into the popliteal fossa. The initial removal attempts failed, and he presented with knee discomfort 10 days later. Radiographs revealed a metallic foreign body in the popliteal fossa, near the femur. Posterior surgical exploration failed to locate the needle. Intraoperative imaging showed anterior migration. A medial parapatellar arthrotomy was pe

Gossypiboma: A case of retained intra-luminal surgical sponge leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment in a Nigerian patient.

Gossypiboma, a term used to describe a retained foreign body mass of cotton (sponge, abdominal mop or gauze) within the body after a surgical procedure, is an uncommon but serious surgical complication. It can manifest with various clinical presentations and often leads to delayed diagnosis and significant morbidity. This report highlights the need for a repeat exploration at the end of open abdominal surgeries as routine. The case presented is that of a young female who underwent open myomectomy in an outreach setting, and subsequently developed symptoms of an acute abdomen due to a retained

Abdominal fat graft migration into bulbar subconjunctival space after midface fat transfer: a case report.

A 69-year-old woman presented with a localized bulbar conjunctival lesion with associated inflammation. The lesion and inflammation were refractory to topical corticosteroid therapy. Her history was significant for cosmetic lower eyelid blepharoplasty with abdominal fat transfer to the midface. Surgical excision and histopathologic analysis revealed a foreign body-type granulomatous inflammatory reaction to lipid material, consistent with migrated corporal fat. This case outlines a rare complication of fat transfer to the periocular region.

A rare case of migrating dermal filler mimicking lymphadenopathy.

BACKGROUND: Injection of dermal fillers has been used increasingly for facial rejuvenation by practitioners of esthetic medicine. The rise in these procedures has led to more dermal filler-related complications that can mimic common pathologic conditions, such as infection and tumor. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 30-year-old man sought treatment for bilateral submandibular nodules. Results of magnetic resonance imaging revealed bilateral masses and sonography was suggestive of cysts or lymph nodes. Analysis of sonography-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology revealed abundant acellular substance with

Toothpick in the porta: Recurrent liver abscesses secondary to transgastric migration of a toothpick with successful surgical exploration retrieval.

We present a rare case of a 72-year-old man with recurrent hepatic abscesses secondary to transgastric migration of a toothpick into the liver parenchyma and left portal venous branch. Prior to identification of the foreign body, the patient received multiple courses of antibiotics and underwent image-guided catheter placement without resolution of infection. Given his refractory abdominal pain, fevers, and chills, a repeat abdominal CT was obtained and demonstrated a radio-opaque object extending through the prepyloric gastric submucosa into the liver parenchyma and left portal vein. Removal of a migrated acupuncture needle from the cervical spinal canal with removal confirmation by cone-beam computed tomography in a hybrid operating room.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has become one of the most popular alternative medical treatments in the world. However, if the needle is inserted incorrectly into the body, various adverse events can occur and, in such cases, the needle should be removed. Acupuncture needles are very thin and fragile, making them difficult to detect and to confirm breakage or residual needle fragments during surgery. We report a case of a patient's self-placed acupuncture needle migrating into the cervical spinal canal and its surgical removal. We used cone-beam computed tomography in the hybrid operating room to con

[Morphology of bullet wounds when using police ammunition, type QD-P.E.P].

6 years after introduction of the police ammunition QD-P.E.P. (9 mm caliber), 9 bullet wounds are presented from forensic investigations along with the results of experimental shots at pig carcasses. The evaluation reveals the characteristic pattern of such bullet wounds: a skin defect which is almost as large as the caliber and has a sharp-edged border thus looking like it has been punched out; the contusion ring ("abrasion ring") is conspicuously narrow. These findings can be explained by the shape and design of the projectile. In regular police work immediate incapacitation has not always b

Podiatric metallurgy and the effects of implanted metals on living tissues.

The selection of metals and their alloys for implants and fixation devices represents a composite of desirable properties. The search for appropriate implantable materials began following the acceptance of internal fixation. Advances in the control of septic complications, together with recent metallurgical developments, have resulted in the safe application of metallic implants.

Bladder Stone Formation due to Intravesical Migration of the Intrauterine Device: A Report of 2 Cases.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 5% of bladder stones occur in women and are usually associated with foreign bodies or urinary stasis. Spontaneous migration of the intrauterine device (IUD) into the bladder is a rare complication. In this report, we present 2 cases of migrated IUD who had undergone surgery at our clinic due to bladder stones. CASE PRESENTATIONS: We detected migrated IUDs into the bladder in 2 female patients, aged 37 and 56 years, who presented with lower urinary tract symptoms and urinary tract infection. In the first case, endoscopic cystolithotripsy was performed, and the IUD w

Intradural Lumbar Migration of Intracranial Neurosurgical Hemostatic Clip Associated with Lumbosciatic Pain.

BACKGROUND: Clips implanted during intracranial neurosurgical procedures sometimes migrate intradurally with rare cases of spinal migration. The appearance of radicular symptoms of topography concordant with the position of the foreign body leads to discussion about the optimal therapeutic strategy. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 52-year-old woman suffering from L5 radicular pain resistant to medical treatment in the presence of L4L5 lumbar stenosis and a neurosurgical clip migrated to the L5S1 level. This clip had been implanted 19 years earlier during a surgical procedure in the

Intraaortic spring coil loops: early and late results.

OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to determine the late fate of intraaortic spring coil loops after embolization of aortopulmonary vessels. BACKGROUND: In some aortopulmonary collateral vessels and patent ductus arteriosi, the narrowest segment is close to the aorta; coils used to close such vessels will "straddle" the lesion, allowing one or more coil loops to protrude into the aortic lumen. The consequences of this procedure are unknown. METHODS: We reviewed the cineangiograms of all patients who had at least one aortopulmonary collateral vessel or patent ductus arteriosus closure between January 1,
