INTRODUCTION: Femoral neck fractures are one of the most common fractures primarily the elderly, coupled with a high degree of morbidity and mortality. The treatment is applied a number of methods of internal fixation (multiple cannulated screws available, DHS system, cefalomedullary). At the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology of Nis developed a new method of fixation of femoral neck fracture, which allows stable fixation of dislocated and nondislocated femoral neck fracture. Self-tapping antirotation fixation (SAF) using two cannulated screws to initial compression fractures intraoper

BACKGROUND: Although the appropriate management of condylar process fractures after miniplate or microplate fixation has been described, there has been no comparative analysis of these plating systems.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of condylar head or neck fractures at our institution from January 2000 through August 2010 identified 70 patients. Of these, 38 were treated with microplates and 32 with miniplates. The primary functional and radiographic results were the maximal mouth opening and condylar bone resorption, res

A consecutive series of 320 patients with an intracapsular fracture of the hip treated with a dynamic locking plate (Targon Femoral Neck (TFN)) were reviewed. All surviving patients were followed for a minimum of two years. During the follow-up period 109 patients died. There were 112 undisplaced fractures, of which three (2.7%) developed nonunion or re-displacement and five (4.5%) developed avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Revision to an arthroplasty was required for five patients (4.5%). A further six patients (5.4%) had elective removal of the plate and screws. There were 208 displac

BACKGROUND: In cases where ankle fracture union has been compromised by persistent syndesmotic diastasis following open reduction internal fixation, both external rotation and shortening of the fibula have been identified as prominent features.
OBJECTIVE: This study reports a technique that uses a z-osteotomy to achieve both lengthening and internal rotation of the fibula to correct persistent talar shift following ankle fracture fixation.
METHODS: Four patients with persistent talar shift following open reduction internal fixation for an ankle fracture received z-osteotomy of the fibula to

BACKGROUND: Bilateral traumatic femoral neck fractures are uncommon in children. The most commonly reported complications are nonunion, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, and chondrolysis. Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) associated with nonunion after percutaneous partially threaded cancellous screw (PTCS) fixation of the fracture is an unreported complication.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a 10-year-old boy who had bilateral femoral neck fractures secondary to a fall from a height. The patient was treated with percutaneous PTCS fixation on both sides and achieved union on the r

PURPOSE: There are few clinical data evaluating the outcome of surgery for open distal radius fractures based on treatment method. Specifically, the major contributing factors to infection are largely unknown. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of early versus delayed debridement and the choice of initial external versus internal fixation on infection rates and the need for secondary procedures.
METHODS: Thirty-two patients with open distal radius fractures were identified from a database. Ten debridements were early (<6 h after hospital admission), and 22 debridements were

HYPOTHESIS: Several studies have shown good results with internal fixation of distal humeral fractures; however, few have focused specifically on anatomic parallel plate fixation using the same implant and postoperative regimen. The purpose of this study was to determine the functional outcome after open reduction and internal fixation of these complex fractures using parallel precontoured anatomic plates.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective single-surgeon series involving 16 patients (12 women, 4 men) treated with a double-column parallel plating technique. Clinical assessment in

BACKGROUND: Excellent long-term results have been reported for nonoperative treatment of stable isolated displaced partial articular (Mason 2) fractures of the radial head, suggesting that the role of operative treatment can be questioned. This investigation reports the long-term outcome of operatively treated Mason 2 radial head fractures.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with stable displaced partial articular (Mason 2) fractures of the radial head not associated with fracture or dislocation of the proximal forearm were evaluated an average of 22 years (range, 14-30 years) after open reduction and

AIM: In this prospective study we have analysed the clinical outcome of complex distal radius fractures that were reduced by a dorsal approach and fixed with 2 dorsal locking plates.
METHODS: In the period from January 2006 to June 2008 60 patients with a distal intra-articular instable radius fracture, who were treated with the above mentioned procedure, were prospectively included in this study. All fractures showed signs of a complex and dorsal instability. X-rays and CT scans were taken preoperatively. Follow-up examinations and X-rays were conducted after 6 weeks, 6 months and 1 year. Th

The aim of this study was to test the performance of poly-L-lactic/polyglycolic acid (PLLA/PGA) co-polymer plates and screws in the fixation of mandibular fractures. Following clinical and radiographic examination, internal fixation was achieved with PLLA/PGA co-polymer plates and screws in 31 patients. Elastic maxillomandibular fixation was maintained for 4 weeks and a blenderized diet for 6 weeks. Patients were followed up at 1 week, 6 weeks, and 3, 6 and 12 months post surgery, and evaluated clinically for swelling, pain, mucosal discoloration and occlusal relation. Segment stability, fract

PURPOSE: The volar approach with locked plating is a common treatment for intra-articular distal radius fractures. The purpose of this study was to arthroscopically assess the articular surface after internal fixation through the volar approach as a means to evaluate the ability of an extra-articular reduction to anatomically restore the joint surface.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with intra-articular distal radius fractures were prospectively enrolled. A volar approach and internal fixation using a locked volar plate was performed. Using a visual analog scale (VAS), the fracture reduction was c

We have compared the results and complications after closed and open reduction with ternal fixation in young adults with displaced intracapsular fractures (Garden grades III and IV) of the neck of the femur. We also studied the risk factors which influenced nonunion and the development of avascular necrosis (AVN). A total of 102 patients aged between 15 and 50 years was randomised to receive either closed or open reduction. Both groups were compared for age, gender, time to surgery and posterior comminution as well as for union and complications. Using univariate and multivariate analysis the

Twenty-six comminuted distal femur fractures treated with a lateral condylar buttress plate were followed up until fracture union or implant revision (mean follow-up, 26 months). Mean postoperative angle (medial distal femoral angle immediately after surgery) was 96 degrees, and mean final angle (angle at fracture healing or implant revision) was 91 degrees (P = .06). Distal femoral angle decreased 5 degrees or less in 15 patients, 6 degrees to 10 degrees in 8 patients, and more than 10 degrees in 3 patients. Final distal femoral angle was 90 degrees or less in 13 of the 26 fractures: 38% of t
