Repetitive Self-Inflicted Craniocerebral Injury in a Patient with Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Self-inflicted penetrating injuries in patients with mental disorders are a rare phenomenon. The authors report the case of a prisoner who recurrently presented to the emergency department over a period of four years for self-insertion of six metal foreign bodies into the skull. Computed tomography each time revealed the presence of a metal foreign body (screw, nail, metal rod, and wire) passing through the frontal bone into the frontal lobe. In each situation, the foreign body was safely extracted with a favorable outcome. Despite the use of the latest imaging modalities, metal artifacts can …

Pott's Puffy Tumor in an Adult Female: A Case Report in a Rare Demographic.

Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is a localized forehead swelling with underlying subperiosteal abscess formation and osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. It is a rare complication of frontal sinusitis, and it is especially rare in adult females. A careful review of existing literature identified only 17 cases in adult females. Treatment requires antibiotic therapy and often surgical drainage/debridement. Here, we present a case of a 76-year-old female diagnosed with PPT. She was placed on amoxicillin-clavulanate 875 mg twice daily for six weeks. Her symptoms resolved with the antibiotic course, and she…

Calvarial Tuberculosis in a Preschool-Aged Child: An uncommon entity.

Calvarial tuberculosis is a rare manifestation of tuberculosis, especially in children under five years of age. We report a two-and-a-half-year-old male child who presented to the Nilratan Sircar Medical College, Kolkata, India, in 2015 with frontoparietal fluctuant swelling of three months' duration. He had also had chronic sinus discharge from the left lower eyelid over the previous six months. Computed tomography of the head revealed a frontal swelling along with erosion of both the outer and inner plates of the left frontal bone. Fine needle aspiration of the pus indicated the presence of …

Meningioma in a Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris).

A 17-yr-old female ovariectomized Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) was presented dead on arrival to the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The tiger was a resident of a sanctuary for big cats and had a history of juvenile-onset blindness of unknown cause. The tiger suffered two seizures the morning of presentation and expired shortly after resolution of the second seizure. Gross necropsy findings included a meningioma attached to the left frontal bone and associated with the left frontal lobe. Histologically, the mass was composed of meningothelial cells arising …

Dumbbell-Shaped Congenital Conjunctival Cyst of the Orbit.

Congenital conjunctival cysts often occur in the medial orbit without adjacent bone destruction and have not been previously reported in a d … low-up. Of the previously reported 54 cases, only 1 had bone erosion due to a recurrent cyst in the frontal bone. Although rare, a primary conjunctival cyst can create a dumbbell-shaped lesion in the lateral orbit and temporal fossa.

Significance of biodegradable implants in case of midfacial fractures.

The purpose of this prospective clinical study was to evaluate new resorbable implants for bone fixation. The plates and screws are made of poly (D, L)lactide (PDLLA). Bioresorbable osteosynthesis and fixation (ResorbX) has been applied in 22 patients. Indications for operations were craniofacial trauma (malar, orbital-floor or frontal bone fractures) or orthognathic procedures (Le Fort-I-osteotomies) as well as the surgical correction in case of craniofacial syndromes. In the initial follow up, the first patients showed clinically and radiologically uneventful fixation and healing of the bone…

A massive sinonasal psammomatoid variant of juvenile ossifying fibroma: Report of a rare entity.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is an uncommon, benign, bone-forming neoplasm with an aggressive local growth that is distinguished from other fibro-osseous lesions primarily by its age of onset, clinical presentation and aggressive behaviour. JOF is considered as a variant of the ossifying fibroma (OF) and the former includes psammomatoid JOF (PsJOF) and Trabecular JOF (TrJOF). Both variants involve the craniofacial bones with the trabecular variant being more common in the jaws and the psammomatoid variant being more common in the craniofacial skeleton. PsJOF is an unique variant of JOF tha

Use of Titanium Mesh During Frontal Sinus Setback in Facial Feminization Surgery: Clinical Outcomes and Perspectives.

Brow position, hairline shape, and forehead projection may confer cis-feminine identity, and facial feminization surgery (FFS) can improve gender dysphoria among transfeminine patients. Depending on the Ousterhout classification, burring, osteotomy, anterior frontal sinus setback, and augmentation, with subsequent fixation via metal or bioabsorbable plates, can address forehead projection. However, titanium mesh, often used in frontal sinus fracture repair, has not been described for forehead contouring in FFS. The purpose of this study was to study clinical outcomes associated with the use of

Neuroimaging Correlates of Frontotemporal Dementia Associated with SQSTM1 Mutations.

BACKGROUND: Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) is a progressive dementia characterized by focal atrophy of frontal and/or temporal lobes caused by mutations in the gene coding for sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1), among other genes. Rare SQSTM1 gene mutations have been associated with Paget's disease of bone, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and, more recently, frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine whether a characteristic pattern of grey and white matter loss is associated with SQSTM1 dysfunction. METHODS: We performed a voxel-based morphometr

[Talus partitus. A case report].

An ankle bone consisting of several fragments is a rare anatomical variant of the talus, in the literature described as talus partitus or frontal split. On radiographs or CT scans it presents as two or more relatively large fragments. The term talus partitus is sometimes incorrectly used for an accessory bone that occasionally develops behind the ankle bone and is called os trigonum. Talus partitus is an unusual developmental anomaly in which the talus is partitioned although it ossifies from a single centre. The cause of its split has not been explained although this may also be due to a prev

Comparative Anatomical Network Analysis of Chimpanzee and Human Craniocerebral Topology.

OBJECTIVES: We examine which structural components are fundamental in the craniocerebral spatial arrangement of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes … in the growth process of the face. Another difference lies in their modularity: in chimpanzees, the frontal bone is lumped together with other elements of the calvaria and with the brain, whereas in humans, it participates in the facial block, probably owing to the relatively anterior position of the frontal bone in this species.

Hydroxyapatite coating of external fixation pins to decrease axial deformity during tibial lengthening for short stature.

BACKGROUND: Tibial valgus, a known complication of leg lengthening with external fixation techniques, has been related to the stability of the bone-fixator system and, in particular, to pin loosening. A hydroxyapatite coating has been reported to enhance the quality of the bone-pin interface. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of axial deformity after tibial lengthening with hydroxyapatite-coated external fixation pins with the prevalence after tibial lengthening with uncoated pins. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of thirty-four symmetrical tibial lengthening proced

Technique for fixing a temporalis muscle using a titanium plate to the implanted hydroxyapatite ceramics for bone defects.

We devised a technique to fix the temporalis muscle to the transplanted hydroxyapatite implant by using a titanium plate, which is fixed to the hydroxyapatite ceramic implant by screws and achieves good clinical results. The size, shape, and curvature of the hydroxyapatite ceramic implants were determined according to full-scale models fabricated using the laser lithographic modeling method from computed tomography data. A titanium plate was then fixed with screws on the implant before implantation, and then the temporalis muscle was refixed to the holes at both ends of the plate. The applicat

Management of asymptomatic superior sagittal sinus compression in depressed frontal fracture: A rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Open depressed skull fractures are common injuries and some are emergencies. The incidence of venous sinus involvement in skull fractures is 11.5%. The significance of this type of injury stems from the potential for substantial blood loss during trauma or emergency surgery, which can lead to a high mortality rate in the perioperative period. Depressed fractures located over the venous sinuses can lead to increased intracranial pressure. We report a case of compound depressed frontal fracture with bone fragment compressing the anterior superior sagittal sinus (SSS). CASE DESCRIPTI
