Functional connectome gradient alterations in herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia: associations with gene expression profiles.

BACKGROUND: Herpes zoster (HZ) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) are severe neuropathic pain disorders. However, the alterations in their macroscopic brain-functional architecture and their potential molecular correlations remain poorly understood. This study was aimed at characterizing the altered functional connectivity patterns in the brains of patients with HZ and PHN using a connectome gradient analysis and further explore the potential associations with gene expression patterns through a spatial transcriptomics correlation analysis. METHODS: In this study, 95 patients with HZ, 89 patients

Alterations in grey matter structure linked to frequency-specific cortico-subcortical connectivity in schizophrenia via multimodal data fusion.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a complex psychiatric disorder that is currently defined by symptomatic and behavioral, rather than biological, criteria. Neuroimaging is an appealing avenue for SZ biomarker development, as several neuroimaging-based studies comparing individuals with SZ to healthy controls (HC) have shown measurable group differences in brain structure, as well as functional brain alterations in both static and dynamic functional network connectivity (sFNC and dFNC, respectively). The recently proposed filter-banked connectivity (FBC) method extends the standard dFNC sliding-window appr

Dissociable Disruptions in Thalamic and Hippocampal Resting-State Functional Connectivity in Youth with 22q11.2 Deletions.

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a recurrent copy number variant with high penetrance for developmental neuropsychiatric disorders. Study of individuals with 22q11DS therefore may offer key insights into neural mechanisms underlying such complex illnesses. Resting-state functional connectivity MRI studies in idiopathic schizophrenia have consistently revealed disruption of thalamic and hippocampal circuitry. Here, we sought to test whether this circuitry is similarly disrupted in the context of this genetic high-risk condition. To this end, resting-state functional connectivity patte

Aberrant brain structural-functional coupling and structural/functional network topology explain developmental delays in pediatric Prader-Willi syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by dysplasia in early life. Psychoradiology studies have suggested that mental and behavioral deficits in individuals with PWS are linked to abnormalities in brain structural and functional networks. However, little is known about changes in network-based structural-functional coupling and structural/functional topological properties and their correlations with developmental scales in children with PWS. Here, we acquired diffusion tensor imaging and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 25 childr

The cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome.

Anatomical, physiological and functional neuroimaging studies suggest that the cerebellum participates in the organization of higher order function, but there are very few descriptions of clinically relevant cases that address this possibility. We performed neurological examinations, bedside mental state tests, neuropsychological studies and anatomical neuroimaging on 20 patients with diseases confined to the cerebellum, and evaluated the nature and severity of the changes in neurological and mental function. Behavioural changes were clinically prominent in patients with lesions involving the …

A Bayesian optimization approach for rapidly mapping residual network function in stroke.

Post-stroke cognitive and linguistic impairments are debilitating conditions, with limited therapeutic options. Domain-general brain networks play an important role in stroke recovery and characterizing their residual function with functional MRI has the potential to yield biomarkers capable of guiding patient-specific rehabilitation. However, this is challenging as such detailed characterization requires testing patients on multitudes of cognitive tasks in the scanner, rendering experimental sessions unfeasibly lengthy. Thus, the current status quo in clinical neuroimaging research involves t

Hypofunctional connectivity between the posterior cingulate cortex and ventromedial prefrontal cortex in autism: Evidence from coordinate-based imaging meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Underconnectivity in the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) may be associated with a weakened ability to interpret social signals in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and result in cognitive inflexibility - a hallmark feature of ASD. However, previous neuroimaging studies using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging in ASD reported inconsistent findings on functional connectivity of the PCC. This study investigated the aberrant resting-state functional connectivity of the PCC in ASD using multilevel kernel density analysis. METHODS: Online databases (MEDLINE/PubMed) were s

Bouncing back: Brain rehabilitation amid opioid and stimulant epidemics.

Recent methamphetamine and opioid use epidemics are a major public health concern. Chronic stimulant and opioid use are characterized by significant psychosocial, physical and mental health costs, repeated relapse, and heightened risk of early death. Neuroimaging research highlights deficits in brain processes and circuitry that are linked to responsivity to drug cues over natural rewards as well as suboptimal goal-directed decision-making. Despite the need for interventions, little is known about (1) how the brain changes with prolonged abstinence or as a function of various treatments; and (

Cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis - a review of current knowledge and recent research.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive disease of the central nervous system that is characterised by inflammatory damage to the myelin sheath. Though often neglected, cognitive impairment is a common feature of MS that affects 43-70% of patients. It has a sophisticated neuroanatomic and pathophysiologic background and disturbs such vital cognitive domains as speed of information processing, memory, attention, executive functions and visual perceptual functions. In recent years there has been growing interest in neuroimaging findings with regard to cognitive impairment in MS. The po

[Neuropsychology of cerebral palsy].

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive performance in cerebral palsy (CP) varies between being completely normal and severe mental retardation. This heterogeneity depends on several factors, including the type of paralysis and associated cerebral lesions. DEVELOPMENT: We review neuropsychological studies with reference to general cognitive performance and specific performance (language, memory, attention and visuospatial functions). We also consider studies relating neuroimaging and neuropsychology in the different types of CP. CONCLUSIONS: Language is one of the best preserved functions studied in CP, apa

Ecologically-Valid Emotion Signatures Enhance Mood Disorder Diagnostics.

Mood disorders, including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Bipolar Disorder (BD), are highly prevalent conditions. These disorders are characterized by persistent emotional dysregulation and substantial functional impairments. Despite extensive neuroimaging research, reliable neurofunctional markers remains elusive. To address this gap, we propose a novel approach that utilizes Divergent Emotional Functional Networks (DEFN), derived from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in naturalistic contexts.By integrating naturalistic emotion induction, dynamic functional connectivity (dFC),

Gray matter deficits and resting-state abnormalities in abstinent heroin-dependent individuals.

Previous neuroimaging studies have demonstrated both structural and functional damages in heroin-dependent individuals. However, few studies investigated gray matter deficits and abnormal resting-state networks together in heroin-dependent individuals. In the present study, voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was used to identify brain regions with gray matter density reduction. Resting-state fMRI connectivity analysis was employed to assess potential functional abnormalities during resting-state. All clinical significances were investigated by examining their association with duration of heroin use
