MATH domain-containing proteins are important for plant growth, development, and stress adaptation, but their evolution and cold resistance in Brassica napus remain unexplored. Here, we characterized MATH genes in B. napus, Brassica rapa, Brassica oleracea, and Arabidopsis thaliana. We identified 461 MATH genes. Microcollinearity and pan-genomic analyses revealed stable syntenic gene numbers, purifying selection, and conserved evolution. The MATH family experienced ancient duplications, showing weak codon bias and reduced functional redundancy. Type A and D MATH genes exhibited low expression

Microplastics (MPs) threaten agroecosystems; however, polymer-specific phytotoxicity remains unclear. In this study, we integrated physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses to examine the effects of polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) on pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). MPs of both polymers inhibited growth in a dose-dependent manner, with PET inducing more severe root damage. PET upregulated photosynthesis-related genes in roots, suggesting systemic stress signaling or a compensatory response. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses revealed that MPs in

The tradeoff between growth and defense in plants is a core strategy for adaptation, but the mechanisms underlying metabolic flux switching remain incompletely understood. The alpine plant Salix brachista provides an ideal model for studying stress adaptation and metabolic plasticity. Through integrated multi-omics analysis, this study elucidated the transcriptional regulation of phenylpropanoid metabolic flux during the domestication of S. brachista from highland to lowland environments and under chilling stress. Transcriptomic and metabolomic data revealed that plain domestication redirected

Reproduction is essential for seed plant survival, and in gymnosperms, cone enlargement plays a pivotal role in seed production and reproduction. However, the molecular mechanisms regulating cone enlargement after fertilization remain poorly understood. Here, using Torreya grandis, a representative gymnosperm species with persistently low cone enlargement efficiency, we elucidated the molecular regulation of cone enlargement and identified sucrose non-fermenting 1-related protein kinase 1 (TgSnRK1) as a novel negative regulator of this process. TgSnRK1 physically interacted with the WRKY trans

BACKGROUND: Intraspecific hybridization in allopolyploid plants can generate additive and nonadditive changes in gene expression through interactions between divergent parental genomes. However, how it simultaneously affects gene expression and the relative expression of homoeologs in higher-order polyploids is less well understood. To study this, we sequenced seedling leaf transcriptomes and profiled gene body methylation in two hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars and their F₁ hybrids.
RESULTS: Although only 4.3% of genes differed in expression between the parents, 22.3% deviate

Potential toxicity to livestock limits the widespread adoption of forage sorghum as a higher-yielding, more nutritious, and more climate-resilient alternative to maize. Although low-dhurrin cultivars are available, their safety under saline conditions remain insufficiently understood. Here, we investigated the salt-stress molecular basis of dhurrin-associated toxicity in sorghum, with emphasis on tyrosine metabolism and the dhurrin-pathway genomics. We demonstrate that exposure to medium salt stress enriches 56 genes in the tyrosine metabolism pathway, including the dhurrin-specific cytochrome

Sparganium stoloniferum tubers (SL), known medicinally as Sparganii Rhizoma, are commonly considered superior at the winter-harvest stage, when they show the traditional quality traits of heavy weight and firm texture. However, the developmental basis of this quality phenotype remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to determine how tissue organization, cell-wall architecture, starch deposition, and related transcriptional patterns are associated with winter-harvest quality in SL. By comparing SL at different developmental stages, we found that maturation was accompanied by reduced

Heat stress is a primary environmental constraint on chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) productivity and fruit quality across global agricultural systems. Elevated temperatures adversely affect plant growth, flowering, fruit set, pod morphology, physiology, and metabolism. The severity of these impacts varies with the duration and intensity of heat exposure and with the stage of plant development. Reproductive development is especially vulnerable, resulting in compromised fruit formation and a decline in productivity. Heat stress disturbs photosynthesis, cellular structure integrity, and membra

Fruit coloration, a critical determinant of sweet cherry marketability, is primarily governed by light-induced anthocyanin accumulation, yet the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive genome-wide analysis of the WRKY transcription factor family in sweet cherry (Prunus avium), identifying 54 PavWRKY genes that were phylogenetically classified into three major groups (I, II, and III). Comparative and syntenic analyses revealed that segmental duplication events primarily drove the expansion of this gene family, with strong coll

Improving crop productivity relies on a thorough comprehension of genetic modules that coordinate plant organ growth with environmental adaptation. ARGOS (Auxin-Regulated Gene involved in Organ Size), ARGOS-LIKE (ARL), and Organ Size Related (OSR) proteins constitute a family of small membrane associated proteins widely found in plants, which participate in auxin and ethylene responses, as well as the regulation of cell proliferation and expansion. Functional studies in Arabidopsis and various crops reveal that ARGOS homologs regulate the development of leaves, roots, stems and reproductive or

N6-methyladenine (6mA) DNA accumulates during chloroplast maturation in Agave angustifolia Haw. and covaries with METTL4 protein abundance, identifying 6mA as a candidate epigenetic mark associated with plastid biogenesis. Chloroplast development requires precise coordination of nuclear and organellar genomes, yet the epigenetic mechanisms regulating this process remain poorly understood. Here, we provide the first description of N6-methyladenine (6mA), a dynamic DNA modification, during Agave angustifolia Haw. chloroplast biogenesis. In flowering plants, inferior ovaries are key morphological innovations that evolved multiple times from superior ovaries to protect female parts of the flower. However, the developmental mechanisms underlying inferior ovary formation remain largely unknown. Comparative spatial transcriptome mapping and cell lineage reconstructions in developing floral buds of cucumber and tomato, which have inferior and superior ovaries, respectively, revealed that inferior ovaries develop from accelerated receptacle growth resulting from the continuous activity of meristematic stems cells at the base of the

While the global increases in atmospheric CO2 levels have had a beneficial effect on plant growth, the negative impacts of this CO2 fertilization effect on seed quality are often overlooked. Using data from acorns produced by mature oak (Quercus robur) trees in the eighth year of eCO2, we present evidence of negative consequences for seed quality. The acorns produced by the near-200-yr-old oak trees under eCO2 at the free air carbon dioxide enrichment facility at the Birmingham Institute for Forest Research (BIFoR) had higher phytate levels but decreased protein content. It is understood that a cyanobacterium was the progenitor of plastids and that the biosynthesis of cell wall peptidoglycan was lost during chloroplast evolution. However, accumulated data, especially from the moss Physcomitrium patens, suggest that peptidoglycan remains essential for plastid division in some land plants. A fundamental set of peptidoglycan biosynthesis (Mur) genes has been identified in the genomes of these land plants, while many angiosperms no longer encode some core Mur genes, including a bifunctional penicillin-binding protein (PBP). Ten incomplete Mur genes were previously

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is a globally important vegetable crop. Ideal plant architecture optimizes spatial utilization, enhances economic coefficient, and facilitates mechanized cultivation. In this study, we identified a dwarf mutant, csdw3, exhibiting reduced plant height, shortened internodes, and fewer internodes. Genetic analysis showed that this dwarf phenotype is controlled by a single recessive gene. Fine-mapping localized the causal locus to an 80 kb region on chromosome 1, where we discovered a 102 bp deletion in CsCLV2, a gene encoding a leucine-rich repeat receptor-like prote

Chili pepper (Capsicum) is known for its unique fruit pungency due to the presence of capsaicinoids. The evolutionary history of capsaicinoid biosynthesis and the mechanism of their tissue specificity remain obscure due to the lack of high-quality Capsicum genomes. Here, we report two telomere-to-telomere (T2T) gap-free genomes of C. annuum and its wild nonpungent relative C. rhomboideum to investigate the evolution of fruit pungency in chili peppers. We precisely delineate Capsicum centromeres, which lack high-copy tandem repeats but are extensively invaded by CRM retrotransposons. Through ph

Human mitochondria contain a molybdoprotein capable of reducing amidoximes using cytochrome b5/cytochrome b5 reductase (Cb/CbR). This 'amidoxime reducing component' (ARC) also reduces nitrite to nitric oxide (NO). In the plant kingdom, distinct functions have been suggested for ARCs. Thus, the single ARC of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (crARC) reduces nitrite to NO by taking electrons from nitrate reductase (NR). Therefore, it was proposed that a dual NR/crARC system can generate NO under physiological conditions and the crARC was renamed to 'NO-forming nitrite reductase' (NOFNiR). In contrast to

NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (NADP-ICDH) is one of the main sources of cellular reductant capacity in the form of NADPH. Although there is significant knowledge about the relevance of this enzyme during some physiological and stress processes, the available information about its involvement in fruit ripening is scarce. Using sweet green pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) fruits, a 50-75 % ammonium-sulfate-enriched protein fraction containing the NADP-ICDH activity allowed its biochemical characterization. The enzyme displayed a typical Michaelis-Menten kinetics and exhibited Vmax and Km va

Efficient uptake, translocation, and distribution of Cu to rice (Oryza sativa) spikelets is crucial for flowering and yield production. However, the regulatory factors involved in this process remain unidentified. In this study, we isolated a WRKY transcription factor gene induced by Cu deficiency, OsWRKY37, and characterized its regulatory role in Cu uptake and transport in rice. OsWRKY37 was highly expressed in rice roots, nodes, leaf vascular bundles, and anthers. Overexpression of OsWRKY37 promoted the uptake and root-to-shoot translocation of Cu in rice under -Cu condition but not under +
