Triple sulfur-oxygen-strontium isotopes probabilistic geographic assignment of archaeological remains using a novel sulfur isoscape of western Europe.

Sulfur isotope composition of organic tissues is a commonly used tool for gathering information about provenance and diet in archaeology and paleoecology. However, the lack of maps predicting sulfur isotope variations on the landscape limits the possibility to use this isotopic system in quantitative geographic assignments. We compiled a database of 2,680 sulfur isotope analyses in the collagen of archaeological human and animal teeth from 221 individual locations across Western Europe. We used this isotopic compilation and remote sensing data to apply a multivariate machine-learning regressio

Environmental and Household-Based Spatial Risks for Tungiasis in an Endemic Area of Coastal Kenya.

Tungiasis is a cutaneous parasitosis caused by an embedded female sand flea. The distribution of cases can be spatially heterogeneous even in areas with similar risk profiles. This study assesses household and remotely sensed environmental factors that contribute to the geographic distribution of tungiasis cases in a rural area along the Southern Kenyan Coast. Data on household tungiasis case status, demographic and socioeconomic information, and geographic locations were recorded during regular survey activities of the Health and Demographic Surveillance System, mainly during 2011. Data were

Of Mice and Fungi: Coccidioides spp. Distribution Models.

The continuous increase of Coccidioidomycosis cases requires reliable detection methods of the causal agent, Coccidioides spp., in its natural environment. This has proven challenging because of our limited knowledge on the distribution of this soil-dwelling fungus. Knowing the pathogen's geographic distribution and its relationship with the environment is crucial to identify potential areas of risk and to prevent disease outbreaks. The maximum entropy (Maxent) algorithm, Geographic Information System (GIS) and bioclimatic variables were combined to obtain current and future potential distribu

Spatio-Temporal Distribution of Tuberculosis in an Urban Setting in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Big cities in Europe have the highest incidence rates of TB in otherwise low incidence settings. Understanding of the spatio-temporal patterns of TB incidence can support efforts for TB prevention and control in line with the End-TB Strategy of the WHO in such settings for low incidence settings. METHODS: Data from the municipal TB register of Cologne collected between 2006 and 2015 under the infection prevention legislation were retrieved, addresses geographically identified and all notified incident TB cases retrospectively analysed for their spatial and temporal distribution in

Live Attenuated Borrelia burgdorferi Targeted Mutants in an Infectious Strain Background Protect Mice from Challenge Infection.

Borrelia burgdorferi, B. garinii, and B. afzelii are all agents of Lyme disease in different geographic locations. If left untreated, Lyme disease can cause significant and long-term morbidity, which may continue after appropriate antibiotic therapy has been administered and live bacteria are no longer detectable. The increasing incidence and geographic spread of Lyme disease are renewing interest in the vaccination of at-risk populations. We took the approach of vaccinating mice with two targeted mutant strains of B. burgdorferi that, unlike the parental strain, are avirulent in mice. Mice va

Redefining the Australian Anthrax Belt: Modeling the Ecological Niche and Predicting the Geographic Distribution of Bacillus anthracis.

The ecology and distribution of B. anthracis in Australia is not well understood, despite the continued occurrence of anthrax outbreaks in the eastern states of the country. Efforts to estimate the spatial extent of the risk of disease have been limited to a qualitative definition of an anthrax belt extending from southeast Queensland through the centre of New South Wales and into northern Victoria. This definition of the anthrax belt does not consider the role of environmental conditions in the distribution of B. anthracis. Here, we used the genetic algorithm for rule-set prediction model sys

An index-based system for early alerts of potential zoonotic disease outbreaks.

The Information System on Wildlife Health (SISS-Geo) is a free platform designed for the real-time collection of georeferenced data on wildlife health and environmental conditions via mobile devices. It serves as a collaborative tool, enabling health professionals, researchers, environmental managers, and the general public to report information about wildlife health occurrences directly within the system. Since its launch in 2014, SISS-Geo has been successfully applied in supporting decision-making during significant wildlife health events in Brazil. In this paper, we introduce a dynamic aler

The continued rise of Lyme disease in Ontario, Canada: 2017.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease is an infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi and, in most of North America, is transmitted by the blacklegged tick Ixodes scapularis. Climate change has contributed to the expansion of the geographic range of blacklegged ticks in Ontario, increasing the risk of Lyme disease for Ontarians. OBJECTIVE: To identify the number of cases and incidence rates, as well as the geographic, seasonal and demographic distribution of Lyme disease cases reported in Ontario in 2017, with comparisons to historical trends. METHODS: Data for confirmed and probable Lyme d

Parasitiformes (ticks) and Acariformes (mites) vectors and their vertebrate host diversity: A global scoping review.

BACKGROUND: While the infection ecology and epidemiology of some vector-borne pathogens have received extensive research focus, many tick- and mite-borne zoonoses, particularly in the global South, have been largely neglected. The current scoping review aims to understand the global state of knowledge for the infection ecology and epidemiology of tick- and mite-borne pathogens, contextualised by their maintenance community composition, in the landscapes in which these pathogens circulate. METHODS: Online databases were searched with keyword combinations to gather evidence on the relationship

The two behavioural risk factor surveillances on the adult and elderly populations as information systems for leveraging data on health-related sustainable development goals in Italy.

INTRODUCTION: Current lengthening of average life and constant increase of population ageing associated to forces that include rapid unplanned urbanisation and globalisation of unhealthy behaviours have determined the huge relevance of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Monitoring key modifiable behavioural risk factors has resulted to be crucial both in spatial terms and as per temporal trends in order to allow comparisons between different geographic areas or levels and over time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In Italy, PASSI (Progressi delle Aziende Sanitarie per la Salute in Italia) and Passi d'Ar

A Supervised Learning Process to Validate Online Disease Reports for Use in Predictive Models.

Pathogen distribution models that predict spatial variation in disease occurrence require data from a large number of geographic locations to generate disease risk maps. Traditionally, this process has used data from public health reporting systems; however, using online reports of new infections could speed up the process dramatically. Data from both public health systems and online sources must be validated before they can be used, but no mechanisms exist to validate data from online media reports. We have developed a supervised learning process to validate geolocated disease outbreak data i

Schistosomiasis in Malawi: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis remains an important public health problem that undermines social and economic development in tropical regions of the world, mainly Sub-Saharan Africa. We are not aware of any systematic review of the literature of the epidemiology and transmission of schistosomiasis in Malawi since 1985. Therefore, we reviewed the current state of knowledge of schistosomiasis epidemiology and transmission in this country and identified knowledge gaps and relevant areas for future research and research governance. METHODS: We conducted computer-aided literature searches of Medlin

[Appendicitis - review].

Appendicitis is one of the most common causes of acute abdominal pain worldwide. About 6-7% of individuals develop appendicitis during their lifetime, with the highest incidence in young people aged 10 to 19 years of age. The incidence of appendicitis varies between geographical regions and both diet and socioeconomic status are thought to play a role in this difference. Mortality rates are higher in less developed countries. Appendicitis is believed to occur due to obstruction of the lumen of the appendix. Complications such as perforation and abscess formation can occur, so prompt diagnosis

Multivariate and geo-spatial approach for seawater quality of Chidiyatappu Bay, south Andaman Islands, India.

Chidiyatappu Bay is one of the least disturbed marine environments of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the union territory of India. Oceanic flushing from southeast and northwest direction is prevalent in this bay. Further, anthropogenic activity is minimal in the adjoining environment. Considering the pristine nature of this bay, seawater samples collected from 12 sampling stations covering three seasons were analyzed. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed 69.9% of total variance and exhibited strong factor loading for nitrite, chlorophyll a and phaeophytin. In addition, analysis of variance

Assessing the spatial distribution of methadone clinic clients and their access to treatment.

Using Geographic Information System (GIS), the spatial distribution of methadone clinic clients and their utilization of a treatment service in Hong Kong was analysed. A majority (93.7%) of the 63 methadone users recruited were residing in the same district, of which 84.1% spent not more than 15 minutes for traveling. Walking (55.6%) was the commonest transport mode followed by cycling (30.2%). There was no distance decay effect on traveling time, but an association between distance and transport selection could be demonstrated. The residence locations displayed a compact distribution, merging
