Growth hormone (GH) secretion is related to many factors, such as weight and puberty, and the reproducibility of GH provocation tests is very poor. This study aimed to evaluate whether the triglyceride (TyG) index was associated with peak GH in children with short stature. This study included 1095 children with short stature divided into two groups based on peak GH level in GH provocation tests [GH deficiency (GHD) group = 733 children; non-GHD group = 362 children]. We found that the TyG index was significantly higher in the GHD group than in the non-GHD group (P < 0.001). A nonlinear relatio

BACKGROUND: Growth restriction in the newborn (GRN) can predispose to severe complications including hypoglycemia, sepsis, and necrotizing enterocolitis. Different interventions and treatments, such as feeding strategies, for GRN have specific benefits and risks. Comparing results from studies investigating intervention studies in GRN is challenging due to the use of different baseline and study characteristics and differences in reported study outcomes. In order to be able to compare study results and to allow pooling of data, uniform reporting of study characteristics (minimum reporting set

BACKGROUND: Growth prediction models (GPMs) exist to support clinical management of children treated with growth hormone (GH) for growth hormone deficiency (GHD), Turner syndrome (TS) and for short children born small for gestational age (SGA). Currently, no prediction system has been widely adopted.
CONTENT: The objective was to develop a stand-alone web-based system to enable the widespread use of an 'individualised growth response optimisation' (iGRO) tool across European endocrinology clinics. A modern platform was developed to ensure compatibility with IT systems and web browsers. Sevent

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: It is estimated that zinc deficiency affects 17% of the world's population, and because of periods of rapid growth children are at an increased risk of deficiency, which may lead to stunting. This paper presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of the randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that assess zinc intake and growth in children aged 1-8 years. This review is part of a larger systematic review by the European Micronutrient Recommendations Aligned Network of Excellence that aims to harmonise the approach to setting micronutrient requirements for optimal health in

BACKGROUND: Growth hormone (GH) deficiency is one of the most frequent endocrine problems occurring in cancer survivors, particularly when there is a previous history of central nervous system (CNS) tumour and submission to radiotherapy (RT).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively assessed pediatric cancer survivors with GH deficiency, submitted to GH treatment from 1988 to 2010 in a tertiary level hospital. We analised the following data: sex, age, oncologic diagnosis, oncologic treatment, auxology, Tanner puberty stage, final height, target height and other associated endocrine problems.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The study of phosphorus physiology and investigations into clinical disorders of phosphorus metabolism has blossomed over the past decade. Recent work has confirmed and further extended our knowledge of basic mechanisms of phosphorus metabolism.
RECENT FINDINGS: This review will focus on FGF-23 and Klotho, and on the recent further dissection of their roles in phosphorus and skeletal metabolism. Additionally, this review will detail recent studies that implicate a role for these phosphaturic and vitamin D regulating factors in extraskeletal calcification, including that occ

BACKGROUND: Available data on growth hormone (GH) therapy in glucocorticoid-treated children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) suggest a satisfactory safety profile. There have been few reports of adverse effects on the course of the joint disease (e.g., inflammatory flare-ups or osteoarticular complications). Despite strong concern that combined glucocorticoid and GH therapy might impair glucose tolerance, this has been uncommon in clinical trials. This article briefly reviews the published data and offers recommendations for monitoring patients with JIA who are receiving GH replacemen

Despite huge advances having been made in some areas of medicine, options for the treatment of GH deficiency (GHD) have remained constant since the introduction of GH in the 1950s. Several initiatives have been introduced to improve the understanding and treatment of GHD with GH, including the long-term Hypopituitary Control and Complications Study (HypoCCS) and the issuance of clinical guidelines. This article considers the impact of these initiatives and considers new treatment options which will potentially provide important future benefits for GHD patients.

Wrist deformities can occur after fracture because of malunion of the fracture or injury to the growth plate leading to imbalance of growth. Prevention of malunion is paramount by early recognition with proper reduction and casting or fixation with casting. If a mal-union occurs, an osteotomy may be necessary if anticipated growth will not correct the deformity. Injury of the growth plate may lead to wrist deformity in two ways: angular growth or growth arrest. Angular growth deformities are corrected most commonly by osteotomy. Growth arrest of the radius or the ulna leads to an ulnar-positiv

Radiotherapy may result in endocrine abnormalities, osteoporosis, obesity and neurological sequelae in patients treated for cancer. In the hypothalamo-pituitary area, GH deficiency is the most frequent complication. The frequency, delay of appearance and severity of GH deficiency depend most on the dose delivered during cranial irradiation but variables as age at treatment and fractionation schedule may play an important role as well. Other hypothalamo-pituitary dysfunctions are also dose-dependent. Low dose cranial irradiation may induce precocious or early puberty, while high doses are relat

BACKGROUND: Growth hormone (GH) has long been implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy, although its precise role remains ill-defined. In 1998, an association between exogenous human GH and retinal pathology in non-diabetic subjects was described.
CASE REPORT: A female child with extreme short stature of unknown aetiology (height -7.38 SD at 11.3 years) and severe hypermetropia developed retinopathy with visual deterioration during two separate empiric trials of GH therapy. On the first occasion, a relatively high dose of GH (10.5 mg/m2/week) administered from age 4.4 to age 4.7

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) often have poor linear growth during childhood, resulting in a diminished final adult height. Here we report a female with CP and short stature but without growth hormone (GH) deficiency who exhibited increased growth during treatment with GH. We also report two other children with CP who were treated with GH: one female with a history of leukemia, and a male with Klinefelter syndrome. These two children were both found to be GH-deficient by insulin provocative GH testing and responded to treatment with increased growth rate. Growth improved to a greater exten

Physiologic effects of growth hormone (GH) extend beyond the stimulation of linear growth during childhood and adolescence. These effects include building and sustaining lean body mass, facilitating the utilization of fat mass for energy needs, and maintaining bone mineral density. These nongrowth effects of GH appear to be important throughout life. Children and adults with severe GHD demonstrate marked reductions in lean body mass, increases in percent body fat, and subnormal bone mineral density. Replacement of GH attenuates these abnormalities, though it remains unknown whether it does so

Rathke's cleft cyst has rarely been reported in pediatric patients, and such cysts are usually found by chance, in 2-33% of routine necropsies, as they have not interfered with pituitary function. In general, they are intrasellar with a single layer of ciliated cuboidal or columnar epithelium containing mucoid material. The age range in which symptomatic Rathke's cleft cysts occur is between 30 and 60 years. This paper reports an 8.1-year-old boy presenting with growth hormone deficiency and micropenis attributable to hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH), implying altered pituitary function sinc

The exact contribution of growth hormone (GH) deficiency to the adverse growth outcome, in those receiving cranial irradiation (18-24 Gy) or total-body irradiation for haematological malignancies in childhood, remains difficult to disentangle as nearly always the cause of the growth disturbance is multifactorial: chemotherapy, graft-versus-host disease, hypothyroidism, and skeletal dysplasia may all impact on growth. There are few published data from which one can assess the efficacy of GH replacement on final height in those children who received cranial irradiation (18-24 Gy) and/or total-bo

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between growth hormone (GH) therapy and malignancy, including leukaemias, remains controversial. In order to study this possible relationship further, we have investigated whether GH treatment induces chromosomal abnormalities in peripheral blood lymphocytes.
DESIGN: Open, prospective study in a University Hospital to examine peripheral blood mononuclear cells in subjects with GH-deficiency (GHD) before and during GH treatment.
SUBJECTS: Twelve idiopathic GHD patients, aged 1.8-12.5 years, were evaluated before and after 3, 6 and 12 months of GH therapy (0.6 IU/kg

GH releasing peptides (GHRPs) were developed before the isolation and identification of GH releasing hormone (GHRH) in 1982 yet the clinical era of the GHRPs began in 1988. Since then clinical studies have been greatly extended. We studied the effects of GHRPs on GH release as a function of age, metabolic status and in different neuroendocrine pathologies. The different mechanism of action of GHRPs versus GHRH and the site of action have been addressed. There is a large variability in the stimulatory action of GHRH contrasted with the reproducibility of action of GHRPs. In different metabolic

An eight-year-old boy developed diabetes mellitus (DM) after kidney transplantation. This boy had previously been treated with recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) for short stature due to chronic renal failure. An impaired glucose tolerance was documented after one year of rhGH treatment. An oral glucose tolerance test returned to normal six months after the discontinuation of rhGH. The boy was treated again with rhGH for seven months until his transplantation. A high fever with an enlargement of the parotid gland was noted and signs of acute rejection appeared two weeks post-transplantati
