Aquaculture-driven collapse of white fish communities reduces helminth prevalence in great cormorants.

Aquaculture intensification has transformed fish communities in Central European ponds, with common carp (Cyprinus carpio) now dominating harvests at the expense of diverse assemblages of cyprinids and percids. These changes are expected to alter parasite transmission to piscivorous birds, which serve as definitive hosts for helminths. We investigated helminth communities in two major avian predators, the great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo, n = 126) and the grey heron (Ardea cinerea, n = 577), from Czech fishponds at two time points: the late 1990s and 2022-2025. In cormorants, dietary analy

Hidden in the dark: description of Calicotyle carmenae n. sp. (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) from deepwater catsharks (Elasmobranchii: Pentanchidae) off Iceland.

A new species of Calicotyle (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) is described from three deepwater catshark species (Elasmobranchii: Pentanchidae) collected off Iceland. Calicotyle carmenae n. sp. is diagnosed as a species of Calicotyle possessing a haptor with one central and seven peripheral loculi, two hamuli, and several hooklets. It is distinguished from all congeners by the absence of eye spots, having a once-looped male copulatory organ, two U-shaped vaginae, and intercaecal vaginal pores. A molecular phylogenetic analysis based on 28S ribosomal DNA sequences placed Calicotyle carmenae n. sp. wit

Interleukin-25: orchestrating resistance to intestinal helminth infections.

Interleukin-25 (IL-25) has emerged as a central regulator of type 2 immunity at mucosal surfaces. Beyond its classical role as an epithelial alarmin, IL-25 acts as a multifunctional coordinator of epithelial sensing, immune activation, and tissue adaptation during helminth infection. In the intestine, tuft cells detect helminth- and microbiota-derived metabolites and activate a feed-forward circuit with type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s), promoting antiparasitic immunity and barrier protection. Emerging evidence further links IL-25 to neuroimmune communication, epithelial remodeling, tissue

Host attributes and environmental factors affecting the prevalence and abundance of helminths in the broad-tailed bat Nyctinomops laticaudatus.

Studies of bat helminth communities are relatively rare compared with those of other vertebrate groups. Additionally, the relationships between host attributes and environmental factors and the presence and abundance of helminths in bats have seldom been examined. In this study, we evaluated how host traits and environmental conditions may influence the prevalence and abundance of helminths in two cave-dwelling populations of the broad-tailed bat Nyctinomops laticaudatus in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. From January 2024 to May 2025, specimens of N. laticaudatus were captured from Calcehtok an

Helminths and protozoan parasites in common opossums (Didelphis marsupialis) in a suburban area in Medellín, Colombia.

Didelphis marsupialis is a marsupial species that effectively adapts to synanthropic processes developing in cities. This marsupial lives closely with domestic animals and humans, which has favored the active exchange of parasites, thus increasing polyparasitism. Hence, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of helminths and protozoans infecting D. marsupialis in the Corregimiento of Santa Elena, Medellín. Twenty-three individuals were captured and classified as male, female, adult, or juvenile. The fecal samples were analyzed using various coprodiagnostic techniques. The eggs and oocyst

High Prevalence of Hookworm Species and Associated Factors among Soil-Transmitted Helminth-Infected Household Contacts in Burie Zuria District, Northwest Ethiopia: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are parasitic worms that are widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions. In Ethiopia, one of the tropical countries, STH infections are high and cause a huge burden. Several STH species show a pattern of household clustering with regard to prevalence and intensity. However, there is a scarcity of data on the status of STH infection among family contacts of STH-infected individuals in Ethiopia in general and in the study area in particular. OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at assessing the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths and

Assessment of environmental contamination with soil-transmitted helminths life stages at school compounds, households and open markets in Jimma Town, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: It remains largely unknown where and how infections with soil-transmitted helminths (STHs; Ascaris, Trichuris, Necator and Ancylostoma) occur. We therefore aimed to identify possible sources of infection by assessing the environmental contamination in an STH-endemic area. METHODS: We first performed a series of laboratory experiments designed to optimize a soil straining-flotation method to detect and quantify Ascaris and Trichuris eggs in soil, and to validate the diagnostic performance of the optimized method when followed by microscopy and qPCR. In a second phase, we applied th

Does a school-based intervention to engage parents change opportunity for handwashing with soap at home? Practical experience from the Mikono Safi trial in Northwestern Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: School-based de-worming is advocated as a strategy for reducing the burden of soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections among children. However, re-infection tends to occur rapidly, suggesting that comprehensive water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) improvements may be needed to prevent this. We qualitatively assessed the influence of parental engagement activities on parents' motivation to improve WASH infrastructure and hygiene practices at home in the context of a school-based de-worming programme. METHODOLOGY: We conducted a longitudinal qualitative study nested within the Mi

Effects of helminths on the human immune response and the microbiome.

Helminths have evolved sophisticated immune regulating mechanisms to prevent rejection by their mammalian host. Our understanding of how the human immune system responds to these parasites remains poor compared to mouse models of infection and this limits our ability to develop vaccines as well as harness their unique properties as therapeutic strategies against inflammatory disorders. Here, we review how recent studies on human challenge infections, self-infected individuals, travelers, and endemic populations have improved our understanding of human type 2 immunity and its effects on the mic

Costs of community-wide mass drug administration and school-based deworming for soil-transmitted helminths: evidence from a randomised controlled trial in Benin, India and Malawi.

OBJECTIVES: Current guidelines for the control of soil-transmitted helminths (STH) recommend deworming children and other high-risk groups, primarily using school-based deworming (SBD) programmes. However, targeting individuals of all ages through community-wide mass drug administration (cMDA) may interrupt STH transmission in some settings. We compared the costs of cMDA to SBD to inform decision-making about future updates to STH policy. DESIGN: We conducted activity-based microcosting of cMDA and SBD for 2 years in Benin, India and Malawi within an ongoing cMDA trial. SETTING: Field sites

Can helminth and malaria infections affect sex ratio at birth in sub-Saharan Africa? Ideas and hypothesis.

The sex ratio (ratio of boys to girls) at birth (SRB) is about 1.05 (about 105 males to 100 females) under normal conditions and could be an indicator for monitoring demographic changes. Generally, in comparison with female fetuses, the male fetus is biologically weaker and more vulnerable to prenatal events. SRB is influenced by various factors, such as maternal malnourishment. Remarkably, maternal malnourishment and less energy intake are pivotal factors for declining SRB in humans. As estimates, the SRB is below the normal range in sub-Saharan Africa (1.03) than the normal range (1.05). On
